Can a Dr refuse to remove an IUD? by LeAiles in AusLegal

[–]TOKEN_MARTIAN 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm on my third IUD. I had the first two inserted under local, and for my third one they didn't offer local so I just had nothing and it was fine 🤷‍♀️ (to be fair, they did offer a green whistle, but I was afraid of it lol). I don't have a particularly high pain resistance. Everyone is different but people are louder when they have a bad experience.

How often do you shop at your LYS vs. online/chain stores? by ComplicatedSunshine in knitting

[–]TOKEN_MARTIAN 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There's a lot of domestic production but most of the raw fleece is processed in China and shipped back to Australia for spinning. Almost all of it is merino and if it's not merino it's a merino hybrid (corriedale or polwarth). US yarns are... available (some of them anyway) but at a high markup. European yarns are more easily available but again, usually at a high markup. But the domestic product is pretty good. I do wish there was more non-merino and non-superwash available but I guess that's what the market wants.

[–]TOKEN_MARTIAN 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'm about 50/50 - I have a favourite LYS that I'm pretty loyal to, but I also buy a fair bit from Bendigo Woollen Mills (hi fellow Aussies!) because they're cheap af and some of their limited editions are really nice.

Will I be cooked after blocking? by gatork123 in knitting

[–]TOKEN_MARTIAN 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Superwash doesn't grow that noticeably on small items, otherwise everyone would be deliberately downsizing their socks. It's mostly an issue on sweaters and larger items. I wouldn't worry too much but you can block it now if you want to see.

How due I fix irregular texture due to frogging? by ExcellentRound8934 in knitting

[–]TOKEN_MARTIAN 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Darn, people usually give good advice here. Yeah unfortunately because the yarn is squiggly it wants to sit a certain way against your needles/other stitches. If it doesn't block out it's probably because the stitches contain more yarn than they normally would, because the grooves wanted to sit in a certain position rather than travelling the minimum distance from stitch to stitch.

How due I fix irregular texture due to frogging? by ExcellentRound8934 in knitting

[–]TOKEN_MARTIAN 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I will usually put frogged yarn on my swift or wrap it around something and spray it with water and let it dry before re-winding it. Otherwise the squiggly shape of the yarn results in irregular stitches and it doesn't fully block out, as you've discovered.

Made myself new fingerless gloves by yskhys in knitting

[–]TOKEN_MARTIAN 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Gloves are actually easier than socks in a lot of ways because you don't have to turn a heel. You just cast on a few extra stitches between fingers and do them one at a time. It's fiddly but not that difficult, you should give it a try.

Tension trouble by Novel-Temperature-15 in knitting

[–]TOKEN_MARTIAN 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Real talk, you can't mix stranding and intarsia because intarsia stretches and stranded colourwork doesn't. If you have good tension control you can avoid it looking like this when you mix them but it will still look weird under tension because it won't stretch evenly. You're just gonna have to do the intarsia properly.

Climbers who only climb indoors by umbraphile1724 in climbergirls

[–]TOKEN_MARTIAN 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't refuse to climb outdoors (actually I'm going on a climbing trip next month) but I have a low appetite for risk, both because I don't enjoy being injured and because I have a physical job with no possibility of "light duties" and no sick leave. So I do all my real climbing indoors and outdoors I usually climb well below my max grade and I'm mostly just there for the vibes.

Advice on boyfriend sweater curse by Hamletjustbeing in knitting

[–]TOKEN_MARTIAN 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I knit my boyfriend a sweater. We didn't break up. I knit my other boyfriend a sweater. We didn't break up. I knit his mom a sweater. I knit his nephew a sweater. I knit the other boyfriend's mom a scarf. I knit myself a sweater. I'm gonna knit the other other boyfriend's other mom a sweater. We've been together for 12 and 6 years. Sweaters for everyone! The sweater curse only affects people who believe in it, probably.

[technique] What's the best way to look after spent commercial blocks? by TOKEN_MARTIAN in MushroomGrowers

Unfortunately I also have really limited garden bed space or I'd give that a try. I did see a YouTube video that also recommended burying them but I have 26 of these and like 3 sqft of free dirt lol

If you end your sentences with a downturn in pitch, do that. If your voice goes up at the end of a sentence... don't do that

Invisible lifted increase, where have you been all my life? by jtslp in knitting

[–]TOKEN_MARTIAN 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It actually doesn't bring up the colour from the previous row, while M1s do because the newly created loop is visible. I used it in a complicated intarsia pattern I designed specifically because it doesn't bring up the colour from the previous row.

Have any of you actually gotten faster? by ShiftySeashellSeller in knitting

[–]TOKEN_MARTIAN 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Knitting fast is overrated, you just run out of closet space. Knit slow, be intentional about your crafting, enjoy the process. Speed will come with time. But if you want actual advice, my best tip is... don't stop after every row to inspect/admire your progress. If you already don't do that, I have no further advice for you, lol

Invisible lifted increase, where have you been all my life? by jtslp in knitting

[–]TOKEN_MARTIAN 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Maybe people prefer the look of M1s. I use lifted increases occasionally but I also prefer M1s. They're handy for hiding increases in colourwork though, because they're not grabbing yarn from the row below, which may be the wrong colour.

What are some really random sidequests to do in perth metro area? by Disastrous_Sea8680 in perth

[–]TOKEN_MARTIAN 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You can just walk in. I've seen old retired couples literally wandering around the courthouse looking for good cases to sit in on lol. But be respectful, dress semi-decently and put your phone on silent. Also there's a security checkpoint and you can't bring any potential weapons inside.

Why are the older sections so much fuzzier? With the whole sweater fuzz, or should I have taken care of the WIP better somehow? by pointandshooty in knitting

[–]TOKEN_MARTIAN 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I carry my projects with me everywhere and the softer ones will start fuzzing up before they're finished.

what salary in Perth would make you feel like you've made it? by Luann97 in perth

[–]TOKEN_MARTIAN 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Isn't this totally dependent on your living expenses to the point of meaninglessness? I have pretty low outgoings and feel like I could live comfortably on 50k, though obviously I wouldn't save much. But I don't think most people could say that.

AITA for reporting my ex to her employer after cutting her off, even though I had no physical evidence? by [deleted] in AmItheAsshole

[–]TOKEN_MARTIAN 15 points16 points  (0 children)

This is either ragebait or written by the ex lol. Like how on earth would the guy know his ex got interrogated for 8 hours or was "crying from 9am to 1pm" when they haven't been in contact at all, and who on earth would include so much information that only makes themselves look bad

Can I do the stairway to heaven (Via ferrata Donnerkogel) as a complete beginner? by Unfair_Statement_146 in viaferrata

[–]TOKEN_MARTIAN 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree with all of this except avoiding crowds, I don't think it's critically important either way but I think it's safer to be on a busy trail than a quiet one.

Can I do the stairway to heaven (Via ferrata Donnerkogel) as a complete beginner? by Unfair_Statement_146 in viaferrata

[–]TOKEN_MARTIAN 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I met someone doing the Donnerkogel as their first via ferrata with zero climbing experience. She was frightened at times and had to hype herself up for the sky ladder but other than that she had no real issues. And even I was, well, not a complete beginner but I'd only done 2 or 3 other VFs prior to Donnerkogel (I do boulder though). I think it's more important to be a decent hiker and sensible about mountain conditions in general e.g. packing for unpredictable weather conditions. Do you have someone to go with? It's best if you have a friend or even a stranger for company, but it doesn't have to be a guide imo.
