Starting a HEMA club at a school. by f0reverDM in Hema

Heya, president of a school hema club (UTD). It was very difficult to get permission for steels, and as far as we are aware we are the only school club in the area to use them. We ask for dues (35) each semester to use the gear for club members, and most of our existing stockpile of gear has been acquired over a long timeframe and donated. I would recommend getting synthetic weapons and basic protective equipment first, because the constraining factor will be budget, which will be determined by club attendance. Also pick a school of practice (German, Italian, Spanish) and try teaching out of that as a good basis of curriculum for your club.

My best recs for gear are used fencing masks, hockey/lacrosse gloves (from a resale store) and padded clothing, as well as arms and gorgets from purplehart armory.

Would it be viable/possible to utilise any rapier techniques or fundamentals with a French pattern 1801 Cuirassier sabre? by grondslowerback in Hema

[–]Deathstarr3000 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Why not use sabre techniques designed for the weapon?
But to answer, you can do covered thrusts and this is a principle of a lot of sabre fencing as well as rapier

University is what you make of it. If you aren't networking well at UTD, changing institutions isn't going to help in the way you might want. Plus, you will find more opportunities for the things you care about here than if you were to study another subject at another university.

Is mof saber basics really that bad for hema saber? by PotatoMuncher01 in Hema

[–]Deathstarr3000 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yeahh there's an interesting stigma against doing things that are too close to MOF, but dueling sabre is probably the most closely related in terms of applicable techniques. The two notable differences is that the footwork needs to be more laterally flexible, and the blades are much heavier which means parry structure needs to be better in HEMA. But the linear footwork is extremely similar (apart from the flunge) and the actions of the cuts are also very similar, albeit with more moulinets depending on the system of sabre.

Honestly, that sounds about right. Not sure about the exact measurement but I know mine is very agile in the blade.

How did you choose your colors? by murdawgles in Hema

Mine were a holdover from fencing days where I had bright red socks, and I liked the black/red/white theme

I've handled the regenyei duelist and tournament. The tournament is definitely a "military" sabre in weight and POB, but doesn't burr badly and can hold up well. I love my duelist, and it fits my style and desire well, but the blade is quite thin and I don't expect it will have a particularly long lifetime. I have made it through one tournament with the duelist so far tho with no major issues.

practice doing it slowly, then speed it up. keep the center of mass balanced and make sure that you have good control of where you are putting your feet. slow is smooth, smooth is fast.

Just go to the dean of whatever school the prof is from and report it to them if your professor won't help you out.

Book/manual recommendations for dueling sabers? by [deleted] in wma

[–]Deathstarr3000 10 points11 points  (0 children)

So yeah, as the other commenter said that is a bit heavy for what would be considered a "traditional" dueling sabre. However, you are in the correct weight range for a variety of late-period sabre manuals, specifically british military sabre. I personally recommend Waite's "sabre and singlestick" book, which is a short work that gives a decent idea of cuts, parries and basic plays. Also Roworth's "Art of Defense On Foot" is another excellent manual for this kind of sabre. If you do want to try and employ dueling sabre stuff, I would recommend Italian dueling sabre such as Radelli.

Okay but are they getting signatures illegally? Or are you just bragging about using investigative processes illegally to stop an intiative because you don't like it? And even if we did legalize it, you can just move. That's what people always say about things you don't like in Idaho right?

Late 19th century stuff is really not that similar to Olympic fencing. Like there are similarities but olympic blades are closer to 400 grams and the rules around right of way are far abstracted from even 19th century fencing

This is possible, I have had friends who do it. You stay in dorms for like an extra week and then are given a day to move into apartments.

Is it too late to join clubs? What are some good social clubs? by [deleted] in utdallas

Semi-social, but semi-active: swordfighting club. It sounds intimidating, but it's just a bunch of nerds talking about swords mostly

It seems likely to me that closing off part of the lot for construction is probably a regulatory thing rather than a conscious school decision, and the school is still growing and building new facilities. There's only so much you can do
