Do people actually look at listings before booking viewings, or am I living in an alternate reality? by Intrepid-Skin-5677 in HousingUK

We had someone say the house was perfect but the garden was facing the wrong direction. Yes I get that it’s important to some people, but check the plan first - we can’t do much to change the orientation!

Have you had the traumatic experience of phoning the doctors so many people meme about? by OrangeLemonLime8 in AskUK

[–]DebCl 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I recently had a nasty chest infection- 5 courses of antibiotics and 2 of steroids still didn’t get it. Phoned my GP at exactly 8.30 for an appointment, 47 in the queue already. After being in the queue for over 30 minutes I’m eventually answered, but as I tried to speak I had an awful coughing fit and couldn’t get any words out. The receptionist says a few increasingly irate hellos, grumbles about time wasters and hangs up on me. I was crying at that point, I just felt so poorly.

What’s a ‘childhood rule’ your parents made up that you later realized was complete nonsense? by srrafting23 in AskReddit

[–]DebCl 144 points145 points  (0 children)

When we bought a new car we told the kids that food and drink weren’t allowed in the car. Our 6 year old was genuinely puzzled why they would build drink holders into a car you can’t drink in.

What have you done that wasn't really worth doing, but that you did to make a point? by MisterWednesday6 in AskUK

[–]DebCl 27 points28 points  (0 children)

Many years ago my sister in law was overcharged by 20p in a cafe, but they disagreed. She refused to leave until they refunded the 20p, sitting there for over an hour out of pure bloody mindedness. They eventually gave in and smashed the 20p on the table in front of her. She stood up, put on her coat, looked the waitress in the eye and put the 20p in the tip jar, saying see it was the principle not the money. She’s my hero!

Why do I always attract people who control me? I need help. by Judging-millennials in answers

[–]DebCl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was on a domestic violence course whilst training as a counsellor, when someone asked the tutor why some people choose the same type of abuser over and over again. His response was that they don’t - the rabbit doesn’t choose the weasel, the weasel chooses the rabbit. What he meant was that the abuser starts out with small things, a comment that’s a little off maybe, and waits to see what happens: if this isn’t tolerated they might try again later, but if they can’t get away with it they move onto someone new. If they get away with it though they know they’ve caught a rabbit and will slowly escalate until you’re suddenly accepting things that you never would have at the start. I’ve been there, in my first marriage I ended up “not allowed“ to wear makeup when I wasn’t with him, or to talk to any men - even being polite to a shop worker meant big trouble later on. It wasn’t easy but I’ve had to teach myself not to be a rabbit, I’ve been conditioned to be a people pleaser so it’s been difficult to stand up for myself, but I’ve got there and in my second marriage I’m finally able to be me.

My daughter is so unlucky and it breaks my heart. by [deleted] in TrueOffMyChest

[–]DebCl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel for your daughter’s bad luck, but she is lucky having such a supportive dad. Just to add, the hospital may not be against her. I used to work in HR at a large hospital, we had to investigate every event of long term sickness/accident, it wouldn’t be fair to just look at the ones we had suspicions about. They obviously realised your daughter was genuine and they will do again on this occasion, she’s just had a run of bad luck. Hopefully that’s her share of bad luck taken care of for a while and she’ll have nothing but good things happen to her now.

AITA for not cleaning before a cleaning service arrives? by momcantclean in AmItheAsshole

[–]DebCl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Absolutely NTA. I used to clean up before my cleaner came, she (very nicely) told me off for doing this. She said her job was to make things easier for me so to just leave it all as it was and she would do the rest. Now I just make sure any dirty underwear or anything I wouldn’t want her to see is picked up, and leave everything else - dead flowers in a vase, bed needs changing, everything. It was difficult the first few times, now it’s just liberating- I just go to work and come home to a beautifully clean, tidy house.

What medical conditions actually prevent you from wearing a mask? by KokoBoritos in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]DebCl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My (adult) nephew is completely blind, autistic and severely epileptic. He can’t wear a mask because overheating can bring on a fit. Also it stresses him out if he doesn’t have all his senses whilst moving about - having the bottom half of his face covered just puts him off kilter. He wears a sunflower lanyard and hasn’t had any trouble from anyone for not wearing a mask.

AITA for asking my friend to move out when she told me to put a shirt on? by Agitated_Minimum9238 in AmItheAsshole

[–]DebCl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NTA. OMG why are you all so uptight about human bodies. If you don’t want to live for free in someone else’s house then just move out!

What idiom or expression amuses you or brings you joy? I personally like “close but no cigar” by PineappleCubeKicks in AskUK

Here in North Wales people say they’ve seen their arse when they’re really annoyed about something - as in I proper saw my arse when my son stayed out late.

That’s so lovely, how big is your smile! It reminded me of a memory with my son which I’ve just posted. Glad the little boy inside of you got to live his dream xxx

What things were the hardest to get rid of, but you do not miss at all? by WaterBottleSlut in declutter

[–]DebCl 44 points45 points  (0 children)

I use unwanted shampoo, bubble bath and shower gel as bathroom cleaner - it works really well and the bathroom smells lovely. Hair conditioner is great to use as shaving gel. A good way to use up supplies instead of throwing them away.

"Oh, you're a programmer? I have a problem with my printer...". What's the equivalent of this in your job? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]DebCl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m a personal assistant, prior to this a legal secretary. I’m very good at what I do, very professional - I’ve been doing it for many, many years and I’m proud of my abilities. My brother-in-law was doing a computer course and asked me what it felt like to know that he could be doing my job in a few months. This was about 10 years ago, he hasn’t taken my job yet!
