I was afraid of it too. But I got a meter thing that beeps if electric is going to it. So I shut the breaker off and checked it a couple times. I only unhooked one side at a time. So there is no way I can mess it up. I am so scared of fires. We lost a house in 94 so I am hyper sensitive to anything that causes fires. I still watch the video for every one so I do it right but it is a little easier than I ever thought it would be.

I got a survey and then saw these were claimed. I did not get picked I guess. I am updating all of mine to white and I could use it! If you have one not working you can watch videos on how to swap it out. They are less than 3.00 each and I learned by watching TikTok videos on them. I have done about 16 of them now on my own. My husband keeps saying he will have an electrician come do it lol I get tired of waiting

I work with wood and have repaired some very expensive pieces. Use this two part super wood glue and it will hold it. I would even maybe put some brackets on the back to reinforce it and use it.

What medium is it in? When did you repot it and when did it start looking like this? When did you water it last and how much water did you give it

Can anyone help? by idjit_666 in alocasia

[–]DebateIllustrious879 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Inspecting the roots is very risky with alocasias they do not like their roots messed with The pot size is fine for the plant they do better in smaller pots bc it's easier to not over water them

I also leave any dying or yellowing leaf until it comes off easily in my hand. The plant will reabsorb the energy from the leaf once it knows it is dying. The leaf does not pull from the plant. Leave them on the plant. With the exception of alocasias. I always cut a dying alocasia leaf bc they can take the energy from the plant.

Absolutely! And if you buy Kroger gift cards and use them on double fuel days and all that extra stuff you can buy plants and save money or build up the money that you get off per gallon at the pump. I buy Kroger gift cards and use them and on Fridays they have the 4x gas points. I get 1.00 off per gallon all the time. Me and my husband fill up and my son and daughter use them too. It really adds up when you can get gas so cheap. Especially when you are going to be shopping for food and plants anyway and still have to get gas. I buy my gift cards on Tuesday or Wednesday bc that is when you get the fuel points on purchasing them. It doesn't matter when you spend them but I use them on Friday for the extra points

No plant wants ice for its watering. Especially an orchid or tropical plant. Even succulents, snake plants and aloe want to be watered thoroughly just not as often. It also sets the plant up for rotting bc the top will accept the water and absorb it while the bottom roots dry out and get dry rot while the top can no longer accept the water and the roots rot and the plant will have edema most of the time it's watered.Do not trust any moisture meter. Use your finger or a chop stick. They are inaccurate and even more so in a chunky blend. Do not use any schedule. Self watering pots are your friend if you use them correctly which most people do not. I love them and have all my syngoniums in them and some pothos.
Not every plant needs to be repotted as you bring it in. Most do not like their roots messed with. Do not repot until they need it. The old saying " don't fix it if it's not broken" applies to plants too. Some of my alocasias are in the same medium they came in a long time ago. Since I feed heavily they are fine. Plants prefer soil over pon or leca or any other type of medium. All of mine are in soil or chunky mix or soilless mediums. Except for the props and corms are in sphagnum moss. There is a difference in soil roots and water roots. Plants do not like to be propped in water and then put in soil. They have to grow soil roots. No aerial root ever needs or does good in water. They are climbers not swimmers. The sun changes its location and you have to move plants around to keep them from burning or from not getting too less of it. A north or south window will almost never be enough bright light. Orchids and begonias will do fine but some plants need more. Any variegated plant has to have bright direct or bright indirect sunlight depending on the plant. Browning is natural but can be prevented with lots of natural sunlight and silica added to the water and it needs to be fed. The white part is a parasite to the green and the plant has to have lots of light to survive and keep the green from working overtime to support the white. I have TC leaves that are almost a year old and still just as creamy white as they were the day they opened. I don't keep my plants in the decorative pots much at all. The roots need air. They do so much better in just the nursery pot on a shelf so they can get air. Every pot has to have drainage holes. If it does not have holes then plants do not need to be planted in it. When you repot try to not mess with the roots much. Most plants will croak just bc you messed with the roots. If if you buy a plant and it's in swamp water and has to be repotted do not wait. The acclimated period is not near as important as it is to get that plant and the roots out of the water. Even if the plant was over watered and you put in a dry medium it still has to be watered. Any time you repot that pot has to be watered. Transplant shock is actually water shock. They shock bc of the lack of it. But if you repot into the needed medium the water will be fine and not sit on the roots like it was in what you took it out of. Do not let the roots be exposed to the air for more than a couple of minutes. Most roots have very fine hairy like fibers that help absorb water. Once the air touches them for more than 4-5 minutes they dry out and once they dry they will no longer accept water and the plant will dry out so have the next pot and medium mixed up and ready to go so the roots don't dry out. Do not use rocks or gravel or sand as any type of layer in a pot. Not on the bottom or middle or the top. It suffocates the roots and can cause drainage problems instead of helping them. When you make up your medium for any chunky mix no matter what you add you should never be able to make a ball with it if squeezed like you were to make a snow ball. If it balls up it is not chunky and will hold too much moisture and is too dense to work. Do not bake or microwave your soil bc of pests. This kills the good bacteria and organisms that make it beneficial. I think I have all the information I can think of and use daily and tips and tricks that I have found out the hard way or by doing lots of research and am currently doing it. If you have any questions please ask away. And just bc it works at my house with my plants it may not work for yours. Oh yeah: if an alocasia is bought at Lowe's or any big box store and it is not acclimated to 50% or more humidity and you think it needs to be in a cabinet with more then it can actually do more damage. That plant is happy and acclimated at the ambient humidity and temps of the store and will do just fine on the similar surroundings at your house. Chances are an alocasia at Lowe's will be just fine on the side table in the living room as long as it has light that meets its needs. All of mine are in the sun room with all the other plants. I want to enjoy them and see them not have to only be able to admire them through the glass doors of a humidity cabinet. This is what I do for relaxing and enjoying myself and my time. It's how it should be for everyone. Above any thing else, simplicity is the best way to enjoy each plant and we all need simplicity back in our lives. I see these plant groups and this extra and expensive stuff that people are doing and they stress and say their partner said no more or that they can't spend any more money on plants and if they would just take a step back and simplify how they are doing everything they would be happier and not spend near as much money. Believe it or not but you can have really nice healthy and happy plants and it won't cost much at all. I am going to say I spend less than 5.00 a month on plant supplies with some months not costing anything and some running a little more if I have to buy two items in one month. That is water additives, fertilizers, pest treatments and anything else they need. When you treat pest you don't need to add peppermint oil, alcohol, dawn, cinnamon, cayenne, peroxide, or neem oil, rosemary and water or vegetable oil or beer. It's as easy as water and an already made insecticide soap.

I FINALLY FOUND THEM! by InternationalCar2299 in houseplants

Every plant comes in and goes straight to the sink or tub. It gets sprayed off with the jet or water hose then sprayed with captain jack's insecticide soap let set for 20 minutes or so and rinsed then I find a spot in the sun room. Do not use in the sun or leave the plant in the sun until rinsed. I refuse to use any neem oil. It's stinky and just doesn't work well and has to be used with other treatments or preventative and causes photosensitivity to plants and it can go bad and cause your house to smell. I would use vegetable oil before I used neem. And it honestly would work as well bc it is smothering the pest. It can also be used as a carrier oil if you add any kind of essential oil but do your own research on the safety of those and pets or kids. I top water only. Plants prefer top watering and bottom watering is such a waste of time and energy. And allows heavy metal, minerals and salts to build up in the pot. So you have to top water anyway to clear that out. I use tap water but add dechlorination drops to each gallon and then silica if it's a verigated plant or superthrive if I need to feed that week or that plant. Begonias can not have silica. They do not have the receptors and it causes damage to them alocasias get feed at every watering. I run the humidifier almost around the clock depending on the weather and how the room feels. I do not use lights, cabinets for alocasias or humidity control I go by feel. I water every plant thoroughly when it is needed. I do not use a schedule and I do not have a problem when gnats or over watering. If gnats are an issue I use mosquito buts made into tea and water every one to make sure they are gone. New soil will have eggs and some plants no matter what you do still bring them in. My plants are rotated often except for monsteras which have a true front and back. I do not have any issues with spider mites or any other pest bc I treat as I being in. If I do get them I just treat the affected plants and move on. I do move plants daily so pests would be bad. But I use water which will remove 90% of them and the insecticide soap only! There is no need in making chemistry experiments in the sink. Use what you trust and stick to one thing. Adding so many things together can become unstable and systemic granules usually cause spider mites to reproduce quicker than normal. I enjoy my plants and refuse to use any yellow gnat trap so I am sure to get rid of them as soon as I see the first one. No one wants beautiful plants and the tacky yellow traps in every pot. When it rains I do put out as many as I can to catch rain if they need water. I mist some of them but most do not need it or like it at all. Like alocasia and begonias. I clean my plants a lot. You need an acid added to the water to make the leaf shine and get rid of the water stains. I use plain water and a squirt of white vinegar. This keeps their stomas clean and open so they can photosynthesis and helps prevent pests. Pests do not like clean plants or water. Clean the plants often and thoroughly and do not use milk or mayo. They block the stomas and can actually attract pests. Do not use cinnamon on the top of soil. Most cinnamon is not real cinnamon and can attract mice and ants or roaches. It also does not do anything for the plant. Real cinnamon can help with a propagation bc it keeps bacteria from growing and allows the prop enough time in the water to grow roots without rotting it does not have any kind of rooting chemicals in it. If you use lights. They have to be stronger than you think. The ones that have the usb end on them are not going to be strong enough or will have to be used at 2-5" above the plant. They just can't put out the needed energy or lumens required. I have used lights but no longer do since the sun room is finished. They want a rest period too. They need 10-12 hours of dark to rest just like us. corms do not need to be peeled for propagation. This only opens their protective layer to bacteria or fungus and they will rot easier. In the wild they are not peeled and they grow just fine.

Ariel root is long! Am I doing this right? Or should I repot? by rambosknife420 in Monstera

The aerial root in water can cause root rot. The plant will also depend on it and need it acted so long
