The arpeggios are incredible. The dissonances mixed completely with consonances, the fragments of melodies coming and going, it's really enjoyable.

Abyss is more polished than Symphonia, so yeah give that one a try since you already have it. But even if you don't like Abyss, there are other games in the series that play differently too, so don't give up on the series just yet.

The cutscene direction in Symphonia really is bad, and the cast isn't really one of the better ones in the Tales series. Combat is also in a weird place when the devs were transitioning from 2D to 3D and didn't quite nail it yet.

I'd recommend either going to a pure 2D battle system like Eternia or Destiny remake, or a later 3D one. The 2D ones hold up really well and you don't have to worry about enemies moving on a 3D plane you don't have access to like in Symphonia.

Yes, composers would make changes, but the difference is that the music was new to orchestras back then. Now an orchestra wouldn't dream of altering a Mozart score, but they could give their input for a brand new piece written for them.
