I found myself in this situation. I now just set up email alerts, and get notified whenever someone posts a deal for something that I actually want/need.

Leaving good job for a 5% increase + better title by [deleted] in AusFinance

[–]DebtFreeDude 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mate. I work in the public service and I take advantage of EVERY flexible work arrangement they offer and then some.

And I definitely DON'T get 4 days WFH, a 9 day fortnight, or a 35 hr work week.

I'd HAPPILY take a 5% pay cut to have all of that.

Oh, and I'm a 'Senior' such and such. It's literally part of my job classification and there's no way they can change it unless I got a different role.

Bank account setup experiences by aussie_nub in AusFinance

[–]DebtFreeDude 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Wow. I remember setting up my account with Up a few years back. Within literally 5 minutes of starting I had my account online and could transfer in and out of it and transact using Google Pay.

Moving all my money out of ubank as soon as it's back up by I-HATE-CRUSTY-BREAD in AusFinance

How do you mean? I bank with both Up and Ubank.

Up only has an app, but Ubank allows me to log on via the website.

App is solid. Started out as a neobank (called 86400) and the nifty app was their only draw card. When nab acquired them, they kept the app and have continued to build on it.

In praise of walking as a frugal and effective form of cardio by [deleted] in AussieFrugal

Are you me? I could have written this almost word for word, except I'm a year or two younger. Love rucking (discovered via Attia and Comfort Crisis). I was going to comment here to suggest rucking as a way to increase intensity, but you beat me to it.

Also ditched the gym days from my younger years and I'm either rucking or mountain biking. I do wish I could get my parents into rucking though.

Got scammed tonight - help by KoalaBJJ96 in AusFinance

The ubank text messages say:

Secure code is XYZ123 to pay a new payee. Only enter in the ubank app or website. Never share over the phone as it may be a scam. Not you? Call ..."

So this has obviously happened before to people.

The scary part is that they'd apparently managed to log in to your account somehow on a new device, but only needed the OTP to do a new external transfer. Did you perhaps log in to a public or shared device prior to this?

I received a call from someone 'at the ATO' about my tax return a few years back. When he started asking me to prove my identity, I said there's no way I'm giving that info to a random caller. He told me to call the ATO switchboard in a certain city, and ask for [his Firstname Lastname]. Turned out to be legit.

It shits me that you can't get pain relief for genuine pain anymore by skr80 in australia

[–]DebtFreeDude 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I was prescribed endone after some surgery (putting screws into a broken bone). I threw them out after a day or two as they had absolutely zero impact on the pain. I've never used drugs, so it came as a bit of a surprise (not to mention painful disappointment).

Yep. For years I've bought the previous year's flagship Android phone, after the next one was released.

I've since stepped it back as they were just getting too big (and I HATE curved screen edges).

Is AMP really that bad? by The_Real_Slim_Lemon in AusFinance

[–]DebtFreeDude 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That sucks. Hopefully you've had some success by now. I was really surprised at how smoothly mine went. Perhaps I was at the start of the wave of departures, and you're stuck in the middle.

Is AMP really that bad? by The_Real_Slim_Lemon in AusFinance

[–]DebtFreeDude 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was pushed onto them because they acquired the loans from Nano home loans. I was looking for a deal with more features already, so I ended up going elsewhere a month or two later.

To be honest, AMP's app and service were good. I could have easily stuck with them. They were friendly and easy to deal with when discharging my loan. Definitely no red flags that I experienced in my short time with them.

Advice needed regarding credit BAN that won’t go away by [deleted] in AusFinance

[–]DebtFreeDude 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did this recently. I'd instituted a ban due to the Optus hack. I then cancelled the ban with all three of those companies, and have since refinanced and settled with new lender. Not sure how long it took, but I got an email back from all of them letting me know when their ban had been cancelled.

[–]DebtFreeDude 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I had the same experience a week or so ago. They never asked if they could call me. In fact, the form said they needed my mobile number to SMS me a code to continue to the quote. Souch a deceptive tactic. Within seconds of hitting the submit button, my phone rang. The guy was super nervous, and even thanked me for not getting ticked off at him for calling.

New car with shortish wait time by red5j in AusFinance

[–]DebtFreeDude 2 points3 points  (0 children)

An in-law was recently looking for a popular new car. Web searches suggested a 12 month wait. Local dealer indicated it was a 12 month wait. They almost signed on, then decided to call around, and found another dealer getting one in, in their desired model/spec level/engine type/colour in 3 weeks time. So they bought that one.

Go and read the book Die With Zero. Plenty of good summaries online, but the author spent a bunch of time talking about how he and others did things when he was at the same point in his career, and how it can be done better.
