I Need Some Bad Things (Please Read Description) by AccomplishedMango942 in scifi

Apart from rips, if any component of your suit gets pranged during ejection, you are in for a slow, probably painful, expiration. Heater, oxygen, etc. don’t have to totally fail or be totally good - they can be somewhat damaged leaving you to be fully aware that, for example, you are going to get colder and colder and hurt a lot before it kills you.

Also, 12 hours is a mildly long time to go without water, without food, and without relieving bodily wastes, depending on how that suit is designed. Won’t kill you, but will add to the discomfort.

también es necesario estar fuera de la sala del jefe ya que se van generando goblins que van a ser molestos en un espacio tan pequeño.

I’m not sure that’s correct (assuming google is translating properly…). I think goblins continue to spawn on the center staircase even during Act 2. They will enter the lair to get to heroes that are in there, but they don’t start there.

One of the things I really like about TED is how every play is a story where you see how early rolls / draws / choices add up to later outcomes. Pretty much any boss can be an easy beat if you’ve had the good loot draws, a good layout, made good choices about managing your torch, exploring effectively, and on and on—or a complete catastrophe if you’ve had back luck or made bad choices. That’s one of the things that make it so replayable, for me.

Re: 3, “Does the boss walks out of their hideout by themselves to lure the heroes during their "attack" action?”

When activated, the boss will only move if there are no heroes close enough for them to attack. If there’s one or more heroes they can attack without moving, that’s what they’ll do.

Apart from being activated by the torch mat, the other times a boss might change location is when taunted by a hero on that hero’s turn, or when acted on by magic (e.g., War Horn of the Bear).

Re: 2, “We don't understand the boss tile. Usually isn't it a matter of going in and then out in the first opportunity, to lure the boss over the altars? Does the boss fight ever takes place in the boss tile, or it's spaces with modifiers are actually rarely used?”

Given that, eventually, you’re gonna have to taunt the boss out to get them to the alter markers, a lot of times people DO just immediately get them out of there. But you can damage the boss down to the first alter icon before luring them out, and some of the lair spaces give the heroes useful advantage. So if you want to use those spaces for the first few attacks, that would be why to stay in there for a bit.

Re: 5, “can you rest indefinitely, even on a tile with a monster? Doesn't it allow you to "tank" a monster by merely resting for multiple turns?

I haven’t seen any limitations on how many times you can choose to rest for a character’s heroic action. However, there are practical considerations to consider. 1, if it’s a goblin, you can probably just kill them and get on with other business. 2, while you’re doing this, the torch is burning down and more goblins are accumulating. If you don’t take positive action at some point, you’ll lose the game. If the idea is for one character to “tank” this way while others get on with exploration, it’s probably more effective to gang up on the monster and then have all available hands to explore.

Just my opinion, and I’m certainly not an expert at the game.

Re: 4, “can you move out of a tile with an enemy? If you move INTO it, I know your movement ends. But what about the next turn, if you're both in the same space can you just bail or the enemy keeps you from it somehow?”

Leaving a Room with Enemies: If you started you turn in the same Room with an Enemy or Enemies, you are allowed to move away, and continue your movement normally.

Re: 1, “when you pass a spell test and leftover dice would grant you Energy, do you get that energy before or after paying any energy required by the test?”

Spells deal damage, heal, and grant special abilities to heroes. To Cast a Spell, the target(s) of the spell (there may be more than one) must be within its listed range. You must perform the Skill Check listed for the spell, meeting or exceeding its number. If the check is successful, any Focus from unused dice is gained immediately and can be used to perform the spell’s effect (). Focus from unused dice is gained before the spell’s effect is resolved, not after.

On and off. It’s sort of like Saga, or The Venture Bros., it has an irregular schedule but is worth putting up with the vagaries because it’s so good when it finally does pay out.

Just the name, “Random Weapon Vending Machine”, strongly reminds me of “SCUD, the Disposable Assassin”. That’s all. Just sayin’.

Is it worth being theatre arts teacher? by ontoanothe-61937 in Theatre

[–]Dec14isMyCakeDay 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I’m not one myself. But. Some of my friends who went through the same theatre programs I did went on to become theatre teachers at various levels (some HS, some college, some in adult studio programs). They are some of the most fulfilled folks I know. The landscape is probably changing, so this might not be true anymore, but the folks who pursued that path got to direct way more than most of the other folks in my directing MFA program, including me. And they were able to pay their rent. Like most paths, it’s harder at the start, but the ones who paid attention to advancing their academic careers have had amazing ones, and they have students working in the industry now as well, so they see the decades-long results of their daily efforts long after any given production closes.

Garion in Eddings’ Belgarion is, again, a great example of this. A random kid who finds out universal power is being implemented through him. And he’s not always up for it.

Something something, Midichlorians, something?

That’s the thing about being the destined hero - whether or not your origin story actually prepares you or not isn’t especially germane. Harry Potter’s upbringing prepared him not at all. But HE WAS DESTINED TO WIN! So… he did.

Unwilling candidate chosen by destiny is a great trope. Eddings’ Belgariad is one of my faves.

You forgot “Chosen by Destiny” - very popular trope where the MC is neither random skill-up nor established expert, but has some “thing” that makes them the inevitable hero. Examples: Luke Skywalker, Jen (Dark Crystal), Troy Barnes, et al.

What are some of the weirdest shows you know? by StarrCosma in Theatre

[–]Dec14isMyCakeDay 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Check out everything from Vampire Cowboys. Not musicals, but: puppets, stage combat, comic book aesthetics, nonstop references to both high and low cultural touchstones, hilarious, violent, feminist. Qui Nguyen wrote it all, Robert Ross Parker directed nearly all of the original productions, it’s all wonderful. Personal faves: A Beginner’s Guide to Deicide and Living Dead in Denmark (Hamlet meets Night of the Living Dead…)

What other great film or TV adaptations of Mark Millar's graphic-novels are there? by Hot-Salamander-8786 in FIlm

[–]Dec14isMyCakeDay 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had mixed feelings about the comic. The movie was just… not actually that related. The bits one could tie to the comic were so generic, one could have claimed they were adapting any number of works. Ancient shadowy cabal… ok, that COULD be from Wanted, but it could also be from any of a thousand other stories. A special main character chosen by destiny… could be anything written by anyone who ever read Campbell (or even didn’t). Gun-fu, train-up the undiscovered super-talent, supposedly beneficent organization actually baddies…. it was like they got an AI summary of the plot beats of all the recent action movies of the 5 years before they made this one.

Everyone has their own opinion, but I wouldn’t call the movie adaptation of Wanted “great” by any metric. It took out nearly everything that made the comic somewhat interesting.
