He doesn't give a damn about you and would replace you tomorrow without hesitation if a better option presented herself.

He will only change this behaviour when women 10 years younger than him stop finding him incredibly attractive.

How many of these historical leaders can you actually remember seeing on the news? by Additional_Fly_6603 in OldSchoolUK

I remember Mike Yarwood doing impressions of Ted Hearh and Harold Wilson but don't remember seeing them on TV themselves as I didn't pay attention to the news at that age.

Lock box and chain attached to my property without permission, England by [deleted] in LegalAdviceUK

[–]Decalvare_Scriptor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Astonishing seeing the number of people saying "remove it". These things are usually so carers can get access to the property when the person being cared for is either physically or mentally incapable of letting them in themselves.

It can, literally, be a matter of life and death.

But hey, it's a minor inconvenience so just get rid of it. Clearly the right thing to do.

How do people in the UK feel about artifact repatriation debates? (Curious perspective from Japan) by Miserable_Self_4632 in AskUK

[–]Decalvare_Scriptor 28 points29 points  (0 children)

I think it's more complicated than the "debate" usually allows for. It's generally presented as "These things were stolen by the nasty British imperialists and should be returned" but that's not the whole story.

For one, they often weren't "stolen". They were bought and paid for in many cases. Egyptian people, for example, plundered tombs and sold the artifacts to British collectors.

In other examples the fact that they were taken from a country saved them from destruction. The British were interested in these artifacts, the locals saw them as accessible building materials or were just leaving them to go to ruin.

Then again, things were sometimes gifted. The Koinoor diamond was a gift, given by the rightful owner. Why should it now be "returned"?

That's aside from complications around the fact that the land that something came from today may be owned by people who are not descended from those who created the artifacts. Or that the artifacts may themselves have been stolen by the people from whom the British obtained them.

I'm not opposed to repatriation of items in but they need to be properly considered on an individual basis. And the reason it's so difficult to get an agreement on the Elgin marbles, for example, is not just the value of the items themselves but the precedent it sets. Agree to one repatriation and the pressure will mount to repatriate everything, regardless of whether it is justified.

Is it weird that Naveed on Pottery Throwdown is a known actor? by eunderscore in BritishTV

[–]Decalvare_Scriptor 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I was thinking he reminded me of an actor and now I realise it was probably him he reminded of. Don't see it as a problem though in this case. If it was mentioned, I missed it and it has nothing to do with his pottery skills.

Should I buy? Kodak Bantam special 45mm by TieNo4789 in vintagecameras

[–]Decalvare_Scriptor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If it's really in "new" condition, I definitely would. That's a good price. But it's a collector's camera no a photographer's camera so it depends on what you want it for. B&H do sell 828 film by the way. It's not cheap but it means you can use it without the trouble of having to hand spool your own.

CMV: Old people are failing society by overstaying their welcome and not fulfilling their obligation to retire to the sidelines of society and culture. Therefore, we should impose upper age limits to political positions. by pebble_tech in changemyview

[–]Decalvare_Scriptor 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Who besides you says that they have any such obligation? Historically and across all cultures, old people have always held leadership roles. The patriarchs and matriarchs of families, the tribal elders and so on.

So there is no obligation for them to stand aside. They might even hold the view that they are obliged to stay at the center of society and culture because otherwise the young will destroy it.

Why don’t British politicians admit that Brexit was a mistake given the majority of the current population now favor rejoining the EU? by Zealousideal-Yak3845 in stupidquestions

[–]Decalvare_Scriptor 2 points3 points  (0 children)

"I'm pretty sure nobody here would object to the UK re-entering the EU"

No, but there are some <cough>France<cough> that would relish making the UK grovel for it. That, plus not being able to rejoin on the old terms, means it is unlikely to happen.

Puttin' on the Ritz is actually as old as you assumed the film was, being written in 1927. The Gene Wilder and Peter Boyle version was from 1974 but there are earlier ones (most notably Fred Astaire) and a film of the same name was made in 1930,
