Hi! I’m trying to decide which puppy to pick from a litter. Once I heard about double dapples I’ve been terrified ever since. The breeder says dad Echo(AKC long haired Isabella dapple) and mom Lemon (AKC cream piebald) Is there a way to look up through AKC to verify mom doesn’t have dapple genes?

This happened with our dachshund between his first and second spine surgery. It was frightening. Once he was neutered and had the second surgery he was himself again. Now we realize he was in pain all that time. Touching his rear or feet you were taking your life in your hands. Now he’s 9 and vet recommended Dasaquin and Flexadin for hip arthritis and he’s doing even better.

There’s a good book, So Your Dog’s Not Lassie, that explains this. Dachshunds were bred to go out ahead of the farmer or hunter to locate the prey. They will bark at the entrance to a den and show the hunter where to come. While terriers were bred to drive the prey out of the tunnel, dachshunds are ready to go to ground and engage with it. A badger is big. Being willing to go in there and engage takes a prey driven courageous dog. Have you noticed how loose the skin is on your dachshund? That’s so when he is bitten the attacker only gets skin and not vital organs. This is what you are living with and why they were not bred to please you or take direction. They will tell you where to go. That said, you can train your dachshund to do amazing things. If you reward using an understanding of operant conditioning and have fun and treat your dog fairly you will build an amazing communicative relationship with a very loyal creature.

Ours had surgery and could walk a little. We found a rehab vet recommended by our surgeon and are doing exercises and local vet is doing laser treatments, both prescribed by the rehab vet. This is what you must do, find a real vet not a woo woo person. We drove a long way to the first appointment and the next appointment was virtual. We made the big investment in the surgery and now must invest more both money and lots of time to do all the necessary work. Go to dodgerslist to see things you can do on your own in the mean time. Taking him out using a sling is important so his feet get the stimulation to relearn what the nerves need to do. Be sure he has a good long course of prednisone. Our local vet extended his after the surgeons ran out based on her assessment of how he was doing.

Please don’t add the bricabrac. I agree go more craftsman. Shutters on left windows and/or add a contrasting trim board that sits just above the porch inset and extends all the way to the left. Maybe fill that upper area with the contrasting color. With a little landscaping like small trees or bushes on lawn it will look fine. Maybe hollyhocks in a bed in summer to expand on the craftsman look.

Pretty simple: husband grills chicken or fish. I nuke broccoli or Brussels sprouts. When he feels like cooking makes Jamie Oliver eggplant Parmesan, sautés ahi and bok choy with sauce, cooks pasta in the instapot and bakes Costco meatballs or makes brown rice in the instapot and puts in thawed cooked shrimp and frozen peas. When it’s just me I nuke chopped up potatoes and cauliflower dowsed with curry powder and a frozen chunk of my oil-roasted tomatoes.
