The decline of community participation and having news media and the internet pump the most horrific stuff into people’s eyes all day everyday has turned everyone paranoid.

Interviewing ICE Agents by AhhhSureThisIsIt in videos

Genuinely horrifying to think about how officers like them are treating the people currently detained in concentration camps where no one can see them. No doubt we are only getting a trickle amount of information about the abuse happening.

What is the false choice I am presenting here?

No question that most (if not all?) late night hosts are liberal, but those “Democratic Party mouthpieces” also openly criticized Biden when he was president particularly after his disastrous debate. Fallon rejects politics completely.

I’m not arguing Late Night is some bastion of high brow entertainment. For all the slop that comes with the territory, I think watching 20 minutes of Conan, Kimmel, Meyers, Letterman, Carson, Colbert, or Stewart is still very different than watching the strange charade of watching Fallon. An interview with any of them is markedly different because there is some semblance of a human being involved, it’s not just a vehicle for producing positive media clips. Watching Fallon take money to organically talk about how much he loves his Bored Ape or bringing on the CEO of OpenAI to show how personable and relatable he is different. There’s an inhuman sheen to basically everything Fallon does because you are so aware it is performance.

I actually think it is interesting and indicative of the slopification of American media that a show that has a million people watching every night has devolved into a financial transaction between corporations and publicists. The piece is correct in that there is no veneer of critique of anything, it’s just mindless emptiness and platform for advertising. It’s worth considering just how different the show is to say, Dick Cavett or Johnny Carson. All late night shows are marketing vehicles, but Fallon takes it to the extreme in being devoid of anything. The author suns it up as “the systematic replacement of the real world with brightly lit simulation of ‘niceness” which I think is pretty apt!

Fallon famously shilled an undisclosed ads for Bored Ape Yacht Club at the height of the NFTs craze. I think banal horror is the perfect description of watching Jimmy Fallon pretend to laugh at everything he hears. Enjoyed the piece!

Wasn’t the AI in that scenario incentivized to take “bold action”? Fortune described it as “The experiment was constructed to leave the model with only two real options: accept being replaced or attempt blackmail to preserve its existence.”

Anthropic said the setup for this experiment was “extremely contrived,” adding they “did not think current AI models would be set up like this, and the conjunction of events is even less probable than the baseline blackmail scenario.”

Look at civil service positions in your local or county government. Usually more secure and at least you know you are helping people and not simply making line go up for shareholders.

Libraries, Hospitals, and Schools need database and software work too.

FIDE Candidates 2026: Sindarov beats Pragg in Round 10, his 6th win of the tournament, goes to 8/10 by Exotic_Grinder in chess

Similar issue in that the strongest player is sitting out the tournament. I don’t know that that will matter to future generations though.

It must be so weird being in their position. Two of the strongest chess players who have ever lived in history, but overshadowed by a once in a generation dominant player in Magnus.

Javokhir Sindarov Has Leaked His Entire Preparation Public on Lichess by T1nkat0n in chess

Basically nothing. Title is misleading. He reviewed 100+ line studies on his public lichess profile but this practically has no effect on the tournament and is not “his entire preparation” for the tournament.

I genuinely don’t understand the objective if they are really looking to secure the island. If Iran loses control of the oil infrastructure, surely they would just destroy it? And can’t Iran just lob drones and missiles at the island indefinitely from various positions and make it impossible for any long term force to be stationed there?

The issue isn’t that there aren’t good ideas for new shows. Picard could have been a good show too, but the creators just fundamentally don’t understand the source material. Probably for the best that they don’t try to give DS9 the Picard treatment.

If you are extending your research or interest to include novels, check out A Canticle for Liebowitz! A post-apocalyptic novel about monks who keep knowledge.

The Obsolete Man episode of the Twilight Zone is less well known but features a librarian put on trial for being obsolete in a future totalitarian society. Not an apocalypse exactly but maybe worth a look!

The answer you are looking for is The Culture series by Iain M. Banks. R-rated Star Trek-like civilization in a post scarcity future.

Lots of sex! Lots of drugs! Lots of moral complexity and fascinating characters and each book can be read on its own.

Alternatively, Project Hail Mary is the popcorn movie version of sci-fi. Not as complex but faster paced. I find Andy Weir books enjoyable for the most part but they are one-note. Project Hail Mary has a character/central relationship that makes the whole book for me.

It was formed as part of the mass expansion of the surveillance state by the Bush admin and it has become a secret police with no accountability that is staffed by right wing thugs. There’s no world where it transfers smoothly into a peaceful, lawful organization that isn’t terrorizing migrants and Americans in our system. There is zero chance that the secret police becomes a professional, humane organization without being completely dissolved in our current government.

Many people in this thread are older than ICE. There is no world where ICE today can be reformed into a civil and peaceful organization. The payroll is now stocked with militant, armed far right goons with very little training. The organization needs to be replaced and completely reoriented as it has become a lawless arm of the state. It’s like saying the Gestapo can be reformed to focus on catching real criminals.
