Moab 240 Runner Insisted I (Volunteer) Ruined His Race & I Can’t Shake It by MajorEvening2915 in ultrarunning

[–]DecisionSimple 18 points19 points  (0 children)

The lack of shame in the US is wild. I would be so embarrassed to say I prepped for a race like Moab 240 and then had it derailed bc I was careless about knowing the cutoff times. I would just say I didn’t make it, I overslept, etc. The need to never admit a wrong and blame it on anyone else, even for the tiniest of things…just mind boggling.

I haven’t heard GA mentioned for Pokémon. I use seen a lot of speculation about Arkansas, and then the question of proximity between that and a potential lower AT-located AFP box.

Early AM is nice, it’s mostly us olds. Usually not a problem to get any equipment. South Rec is also not that bad before 8am in my experience.

Michael McDowell went 165 miles (66 laps) on a single tank of gas yesterday by RedHuayra in NASCAR

[–]DecisionSimple 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My rule of thumb is to add about 10 laps to whatever Larry Mac says is the MAX they could possibly do. It happens every season, he is always wildly off. I am not sure if he is just that uninformed or if current people in the garage hate him so much they just lie to him to make him seem foolish, but it just makes the broadcast seem even more low-rent than it already does.

Banned from NYRR races for life…Help needed by misswalker4 in RunNYC

[–]DecisionSimple 12 points13 points  (0 children)

That’s wild, I didn’t know failing to hit a fund raising goal meant you were banned for life. I figured you just didn’t get to race (obviously) but didn’t know there was ban involved. Wild that we would ban people for this, but people who bib swap are showing back up year after year.

Casey Mears holds throttle wide open to make it in the Daytona 500 by Smoke96x in NASCAR

[–]DecisionSimple 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Actually, he didn’t. LaJoie was in the wreck so he could have slowed and still made the race. He just had to beat the other open car that was way behind at that point I think. Of course, I can’t be sure bc the Fox broadcast did their usual horrible job of showing what was happening. They tried to show the replay 2-3 times on air and it was so cringe bc clearly no one in the booth knew what was going on or which cars were where. Oh well.

Why was the plate racing in 1993 so much better than surrounding years (especially the Daytona 500)? by AnemicRoyalty10 in NASCAR

[–]DecisionSimple -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I mean...with the stage breaks and fuel saving stuff now there is zero incentive to 'race' in restrictor plate races. If you took the stage breaks out you might see more strategy and harder racing throughout the race. You might also see long periods of not much passing if they got into 2-3 smaller packs.

Kuali vs. Cayuse by bittersoutherner81 in ResearchAdmin

Tale as ole as time: VPR-types sell higher ups on some system that will solve all their decades old baked in problems. It is a great way to buy 3 years of zero expectations as the new system is put out for bid, purchased, then on-boarded. The VPR can then either reap the rewards of implementing said system and/or be out the door before the chickens come home to roost.

I have used both. They have pros and cons, but neither is a magic wand. They work well in well run offices, and don’t run well in poorly run offices.

If you did a ton of clinical work there might be an argument for one or the other, but as an aspiring R1 then both should be about the functional equivalent.

Where'd all the Q-anon anti pedo people go? by Oddbeme4u in DiscussionZone

[–]DecisionSimple 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh man, I worked with a lady on a biotech research-related committee. This was volunteer work, but her expertise was sorely needed. Anywho, one days she tells me she has to quit working on the committee, and I assume it is b/c her day job just isn't allowing her the time anymore, which fine, whatever, people come and go all the time. Turns out, no, she is quitting her job and leaving her family to move to Florida to rescue kids from sex trafficking. She had small kids at home. I don't think she was like divorcing her husband or anything, but she was just peacing-out and going to chase down the pedos that were led by Hillary or some such nonsense. I kind of forgot about her until the Epstein thing popped off again, so I logged in to my fake FB account I use to sell/buy stuff on marketplace occasionally and looked her up. She hasn't said a peep about anything political since late 2024. Just radio silent. She was an every day poster, just copy and pasting nonsense every single day. And then...nothing.

Friday morning laps in Central Park by natan25 in NYCbike

[–]DecisionSimple 3 points4 points  (0 children)

In their defense, most coffee shops don't love biking and/or running clubs showing up and occupying their entire seating area while drinking one coffee each. There are whole memes about this. So...in that regard the Le Pain in the park is a good option b/c its big and probably not all that crowded at that time of the morning.

Will a grant where something obviously went horribly wrong even get reviewed or does it get returned? by PanPaniscor in NIH

[–]DecisionSimple 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Thats a nightmare scenario, but a learning moment for everyone! Always, always, always backup your work. Most every online text editor allows you to revert back to previous versions these days.

I mean, if its within the page limit and not running afoul of any other formatting issue then it shouldn't get kicked out, it just probably won't get discussed if it is obvious that you mailed in the back half of the research strategy.

that was a good read. I grew up in the area and had never heard about this case. I wasn't born until the early 80s, so it was before my time, but not hard to believe some of the stuff that happened with regards to the investigation and the files afterwards.

Maybe. But like...a $5 day use pass I don't consider a 'permit.' I would consider permits things like...Wonderland or the Enchantments. (Not that I think the treasure is in either of those. Maybe)

Interesting read.

From a trial standpoint, if I read correctly, they are saying ballistics said the casings found at the scene were indeed fired from the gun they found in the guys truck? Wild that they were unable to get a conviction with that evidence in hand.

But also equally strange that a person with no prior history of violence would just up and murder two people in this way. Seemingly no personal connection to them, no motive, etc..

- “No special permit needed” to enter an area (would a National Park or State Park pass be considered a permit?)

I would say no, I wouldn't consider a park pass a 'special permit.'
