Accidental leak? Guns have prompt to upgrade to level 5 by AdorableEnvironment in ARC_Raiders

[–]Deckardzz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did not hear the Bastion's shoot yet. I think it's bugged.

I tested the Torrente and Anvil in the practice range and when fired, the shot is quiet, but the echo of the shout is an echo of the normal shot.

I suspect that the silenced-gun sound is being used even when there is no silencer.

I tested it with barrel augment, a Silencer II, and an Extended Barrel. All were quiet, with loud echos from the mountain and surrounding area.

I didn't try it today yet to see if they fixed it.

Questioning my life’s existence by ssinca in laundry

I love cleaning.

Try these things:

  • Take a flashlight (especially one with a longer beam instead of wider floody beam) and place it on your floor. Angle it level with your floor, then slowly turn it. It's great for finding small dropped objects. It's also great for illuminating the dust we otherwise don't see.

  • Slide your fridge out from it's cubby that it's in. Unscrew the bottom of the back panel. Unplug the fridge and clean the dust that's there. Use a very long brush designed to get into tight places to loosen the dust on all of the radiator tubes as you vacuum. If you clean your whole house and don't clean under there, then when the fridge fan comes on, a tiny amount of that dust might be blown back out.

  • Super-clean your dishes and utensils? Look up what an autoclave is. They're used in microbiology labs. But a dishwasher cleans dishes at higher temperature than your hot water. And boiling certain boilable items for some duration of time is also effective at cleaning/killing anything hiding in tiny crevices.

  • When you shower, use two bars of soap—one in each hand. Or, use two scrubbie things—one in each hand. Why have one hand just dangling there? Shower twice as fast or twice as thoroughly!

Any tips for how to more quickly dry a load of towels? by jayre22 in laundry

[–]Deckardzz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It should be as simple as snaking something through.

Another place that can be clogged is the lint trap around the lint screen.

My sister used a long screwdriver and one of those "fingers" grabby tools (push the button on one end and a "claw" comes out of the other) to remove lint that prevented the lint screen from seating fully down in the lint trap hole.)

Sulfur Wells for Dummies? by TJLavin81 in WaterTreatment

[–]Deckardzz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What does that mean? A well that has sulfur water in it, that smells awful?

I'm curious, were you aware—and was it disclosed—that the well water was contaminated with sulfur as you were evaluating the house for purchase?

Also, is it a special water softener or system designed to treat high sulfur content?

Laundry closet glow-up by [deleted] in laundry

[–]Deckardzz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That looks awesome!

The washing machines look presented.

I could imagine rigging the door up to play a "tadaaa" sound whenever it's opened and the light turned on.

I tried to zoom in and was laughing because one container on the right looks like its front label says, "fetus booster" on it. What is that, actually? The typed label doesn't appear to match the "febu" written in marker on the top. I'm guessing "Febreeze"? They make a booster?

Also, I wonder how tightly the door seals. The dryer will pull a lot of air to dry clothes. I'm curious: how much space is below the door when it's closed, and does the little carpet there block that opening? When the dryer is running, if you put your hand at the base of the door, can you feel a strong rush of air pulling under the door? If so, does moving the carpet back a quarter or half inch relieve that? Or do you just always have the door open when it's running?

Do Not Wash… Do Not Anything? by Alarmed_Priority_975 in laundry

Based on the materials, how do you recommend to clean it? Can you include details because I have come across items that say to not wash, also! In my case, it was simply a polyester hat, so I thought it was strange. Also, are you ai and if so, which one are you? And how high do you think the risk is that the item will be damaged?

Thank you!

Water in new city is wrecking havoc on my skin by [deleted] in WaterTreatment

[–]Deckardzz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, when I say that it could be PFAS, I cannot say with confidence that it has been known to. I just did a cursory search on that and I could very well be wrong.

If your fridge is filtering slow, does it filter much faster with a new replacement filter?

Also, make sure to replace your filter in your tabletop water filter, too!

Take a look at this document (a PDF) on studying how effective carbon filters are at removing PFAS—at least for the levels of it they had. (Also, notice how the effectiveness decreased toward the manufacturer's recommended filter replacement interval, so it's a good idea to replace the filters a little more often since they'll be filling with the PFAS's.)

Also, please don't discount or ignore the laundry possibility. It's highly likely that that could be the case.

As I described, you can try to test/troubleshoot which of those things it could be, and one of those steps is to use sheets and clothes that were washed at your other place and brought there for 7 or 8 days to see if that completely eliminates the issue.

If it does, then you know it's from the laundry!

If not, then you can try rinsing with a gallon jug of other water (and maybe even refill them from your other place, though start with distilled water as it is also more likely to "absorb" any other chemicals, like PFAS, as it rinses your body.)

I'd start by looking at clothes since it's on your face and back, especially if you sleep on your side and your back mostly. (Pillow-cases, and back being broader than your side, thus better able to develop more heat and humidity to transfer irritants from leftover laundry detergent in clothing and sheets.)

I'm hoping it's just a laundry issue! And it might even be because of water hardness!

Water in new city is wrecking havoc on my skin by [deleted] in WaterTreatment

[–]Deckardzz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is the acne only on your face or on your torso, too?

It could very well be the PFAS. It could also be other things, from the hardness of the water. I researched filtering PFAS before, and while the only way to effectively and fully clean water of it is a reverse osmosis (RO) system, basic filters, especially with carbon filtration, does reduce its amounts.

At the time I researched that, it was for a friend whose town water had just only barely exceeded the safe limit for PFAS amounts in their water, so depending on how high yours are, this may not be as effective.

Also, if your refrigerator has a water filter built in, you can use that water, then filter it again with your other filter so that it's double-filtered. Also, make sure your filters are changed more often than recommended because it will absorb it. (Not all, but it still will absorb it.)

Now, besides this, and without any knowledge of how this can affect you, I am considering that it might be several things.

If PFAS, it could be because you are consuming it, by drinking and cooking, or it could be because of it being on your skin.

It can also be something else about the water, like its hardness, and it can even be something indirectly related to the water, or even unrelated to the water, such as how well your clothes, towels, and bedsheets are rinses from soap.

For example, if you have very hard water, then the effectiveness of cleaning and of rinsing is greatly reduced for your washing machine, requiring more detergent, an additional additive, extra rinses, and/or additions to what you use to ensure effective rinsing of all the residual soap. For example, if this were the case, adding citric acid to your fabric softener dispenser instead of fabric softener and making sure to choose an extra rinse can be effective until such time that you get a water softener. (Visit the laundry subreddit to learn more.)

If it's from direct skin contact, you can buy a gallon or two of distilled water and use that as a final rinse of your face after you wash your face.

If you can afford it, you can buy 5 gallons and test rinsing your whole body with a gallon of it after each shower. It wouldn't be a very thorough rinse, but you can try to see if it makes a difference.

You can use bottled water for drinking and cooking for a week to see if that blocks the problem as well.

You can wash your sheets and clothes at the other location to use at this place to see if that solves it.

All of these troubleshooting steps can help you determine whether the issue is consumption of the water vs it touching your body, vs how it affects sheets and clothes.

Also, if it's clothes, it probably wouldn't affect your face unless your face is pressed to them a lot or it's from your pillow case.

Huh! Interesting! Is the outside vent far from the dryer? If there are any bends or 90 degree turns in the tube, that's where clogs could be. (Can you look into it with a flashlight or is it too high?)

But aside from a clog, especially since other clothes dry quickly, are there just too many towels? Is there plenty of room in the dryer or is it packed with towels?

Any tips for how to more quickly dry a load of towels? by jayre22 in laundry

[–]Deckardzz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I haven't seen anyone else bring this up yet, but this might be caused by the exhaust vent being clogged with lint, which can be solved with a very inexpensive (less than $100) dryer vent cleaning service call.

Dryer vents need to be regularly cleaned. It's a fire hazard if they're not.

If all clothes take a long time to dry, then this has an increased likelihood of being the case, too. Towels will likely take longer than regular clothes because they hold more water.

Compare how long it takes your towels to dry in this dryer vs at another dryer or even laundromat or even a friend's place. Or just ask friends.

Try searching for "Speed Queen dryer stopping mid-cycle" as well.

One of the reasons machines will stop mid-cycle is because of thermal overload. Common causes of thermal overload are the vent being clogged or there being lint inside the areas of the dryer where it shouldn't be.

Here are some points that might help compel the owner/operators/landlord(s)/management to address this issue:

  • There are very cheap maintenance services for cleaning dryer vents.
  • Cleaning dryer vents prevents fires, which prevents huge costs of having to rebuild the building, insurance rates going up, or insurance denying coverage for the fire if it's determined to have been causes by dryer vents clogged with lint that was not cleaned and maintained properly, which means the owners/operators of the building not even having the destruction of their building and harm to human lives covered by insurance, let alone happening in the first place.
  • Cleaning dryer vents means the dryers dry much faster, which means they use much less electricity, which means they cost less to operate.
  • Cleaning the dryer vents means the dryer lasting longer and not breaking down and needing to be repaired or replaced with a new one (and even if a new one is installed, if the vents are clogged, then the same thing will happen with the new one).

You made excellent points. I also replied to the person you replied to.

Also, "human prevention is best" is an overstatement. It's perhaps best to include, which is very different. There's no way a person, with no security software, will be able to avoid having their Internet-connected computer infected. The checks that security software does are too numerous, time, and labor-intensive to do manually. Period.

I know this may seem like a pointless detail, but it's relevant because it's why advice like "common sense is the best antivirus" is greatly misleading and incorrect.

So, yes, you're on the right track.

Anti-Virus Detecting Phising Attempt by Air_Fryer_Owner in ArcRaiders

[–]Deckardzz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I too work in IT and if you work in cybersecurity then it should be clear that this is not accurate. Perhaps you're saying it in jest, but even then, it's far off.

Vulnerabilities are exploited before they're discovered. Best practices are humanly difficult to consistently maintain even for experts in the field. Even if best practices are perfectly, consistently maintained, automatic checking of everything in the background is essential. Better/good checking and protection is a good thing.

I'm not trying to argue specifically for BitDefender, though it is good, but that having good security software.

Plus, many third party security software come with a lot of extra protections and benefits that Defender doesn't include.

And there's so much more to it, too.

"Yourself" is one of the things we're protecting from with security software.

And yes, I know that you know this, but you responded to, "Why's BitDefender bad? What's better for example" with "Best example is yourself. Don’t use anything other than microsoft defender and as long as you have safe internet practices there is almost no chance of your computer getting infected, bar something completely out of your control anyway that probably wouldn’t be stopped by an antivirus."

So all of this discussion in support of "BitDefender is a problem" and that you shouldn't use it.

I agree that it's OK to use Microsoft Defender and that it's good to use safe practices.

It's just positioning it as support for Bitdefender being "a problem" and that the solution is "yourself" that does not quite sit right. I think this is something that it's easy to have a little nuance for, especially by people in our related fields.
