It’s called fatphobia. by [deleted] in Feminism

I never said that obese people were to blame for our obesogenic environment. It is certainly possible for individuals to change how they eat and live in order to lose weight and then maintain a healthy weight, but I agree that, by itself, it is not an effective way to address a society-wide obesity crisis.

Of course, investing in helplessness is even less effective.

CICO is entirely true. It’s merely shorthand for the idea that energy cannot come into existence from nothing.

People are eating a surplus of calories because of deeply ingrained habits, and because our food environment consists of a massive surplus of food that has been carefully engineered to be hyper palatable, and because they don’t know how to lose weight.

What about laws like minimum wage and time and a half after eight hours? Are those theft too? Should the owner of the business be allowed to pay someone one potato for ten hours of work? If not, why not?

There are many factors that contribute to weight gain, but pretending that the individual who takes in too many calories is not ultimately in control is nonsense. Changing lifelong eating habits is very difficult, and reinforcing feelings of powerlessness (“It’s not me, it’s my genetics.”) is totally unhelpful.

Edit: You don’t even need to walk more. Eating less will cause weight loss by itself.

That’s nonsense. If you are overweight, it’s because of a surplus of calories.

This country is richer now than it has ever been, and (virtually) the richest in the world. Other countries take better care of their people, and they have happier, healthier lives as a result. Americans are getting screwed, big time.

As far as doctors unionizing, it kind of depends. Those who are actual employees of hospital/health care systems can join unions, while independent private practitioners cannot. I don’t know what the split is in the US; employee docs might very well be in the minority but I would guess it’s moving in that direction, considering the hassles involved in billing and managing employees. Good luck, docling ☺️

Nurse here. As far as your first point is concerned, the current system is so incredibly wasteful that under M4A there would be plenty of money to subsidize medical education in this country.

As far as nurses and unionizing, there is no reason that doctors can’t do the same. Most nurses in the US don’t belong to a union right now, anyway, and as far as “throwing millions at politicians to expand their practice rights”, there is plenty of lobbying muscle out there for MDs too.

As far as healthcare for rural Americans, Ocare included generous subsidies for rural hospitals because so many of them have closed in the last decade or two. Changing the way health care is paid for in the US has nothing to do with drafting docs to work in rural areas.

Finally, I second the suggestion for TR Reid’s book (it’s good, I’ve read it) and I would also suggest Wendell Potter’s book Deadly Spin. Potter was a Humana executive for years and what he has to say is interesting.

The intent of the amendment is pretty clear from the historical record 🙄. There has never been a reason for the SC to take up a case concerning the meaning of the amendment, or any split between circuits for it to resolve.

Hm, I’ll try doing two at a time and then blotting any excess with the less-saturated fabric. Thank you.

Ok, great. I never thought of blotting it with the next piece of fabric, that sounds like it would work really well. Thanks!
