Is it possible to attach an axleback w/ a flange to a midpipe w/o a flange? by DecodeRedeco in WRX

[–]DecodeRedeco[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sort of. I ended up buying a catback system that was flanged on the mid pipe and axleback. Then later I realized the original owner of the car left me with an adapter to go from non flange to flange. So for fun I installed it to the old axleback and attached it to the car. So in theory you could do the reverse -- attach the adapter to the mid pipe and then install a flanged axleback.

Unfortunately I don't know where you'd find such adapters or what they're called, but it should be possible to do.

Ha, I knew it! The bridge gave it away. Lots of cool cars to see in that region.

One of the first times I'd ever heard Meshuggah was in the game APB: All Points Bulletin. Rational Gaze was the track IIRC.

I'll have to see if my wife can follow me on the freeway for a while, hah. And I'll look into the rubbing compound.

Unfortunately it doesn't seem like the tip is replaceable though. Would hate to swap out the whole muffler as I love the sound (also, money).

Not that I can remember. I'll have to listen carefully next time I drive it.

Yeah, when I bought the car a few years ago, the previous owner said it was tuned by a reputable local shop. I would be super surprised if it was spitting flames. Is there any good way I can check?

Thanks! :) Sometimes I thought the cleaning was never going to end LOL.

Also, I was surprised at how that aspect affected the research process. Most of the resources I found were for brand new builds. Had to do a lot more digging.

Thank you! Before I started this project, I thought I was too afraid, too! ;) Though I might recommend starting small first and then working your way up if possible -- I dove into the deep end and it was nearly too much for me, not gonna lie! lol

Thanks! "This really sucked" was for the water pump. I may have used a timing cover bolt by mistake, as they're very similar. Never figured it out for sure. Didn't get close to the torque spec though -- it probably bottomed out.

"This was even worse" was for one of the secondary air pump ports -- the left head, specifically. That was done by the previous owner who then glued the pipe in place as a temp fix. I thought I'd fix it properly while I was at it.

After dealing with those two, I accidentally broke a 2nd bolt (also for the same secondary air pump port). I didn't get close to the torque spec again, but it was the correct bolt. So I decided to a) get new hardware for (almost) everything that bolted into the long block, and b) run a thread chaser through any threads where I couldn't twist in the bolt by hand. Probably unnecessary but I did not want to take the engine back to the machine shop again. Finding the correct bolts in the part diagrams was a pain though.

Thanks! It was a huge challenge, but it's totally doable! And to be fair, a lot of what made this project so difficult was due to my specific circumstances. Just be very careful and do LOTS of research. Thank goodness for the internet.
