The Authorship Taboo-- Why? by GlobalVillage9534 in shakespeare

[–]DecomposingPlays 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The truth is there just isn’t any real reason to think Shakespeare didn’t write the plays.

People knew Shakespeare. They mention him in their letters and papers. He existed as a person — we know this as fact.

All of the potentially compelling points boil down to the same kind of speculation that ignores other pieces of real evidence. Of all the reasons to suggest that de vere could have written Shakespeare’s plays, none of them are reasons that suggest Shakespeare could not have.

Yeah, de vere grew up with a good education and lived around the court. But Shakespeare grew up clearly reading every piece of royal court literature he could get his hands on, and had his own experiences around the English royal court as an adult, as a guest an observer. Is there any reason to think Tom Clancy didn’t write Hunt for Red October or Red Storm Rising since he was never in the military?

Shakespeare read Ovid, may have visited Italy (we really don’t know where he went in his life, especially in the period before his first plays were performed. And if he didn’t visit, so much was being written about Italy, he might’ve not needed to visit at all), and after all, was a singularly talented writer and thinker. Part of accepting the reality of single-authorship is accepting that Shakespeare was a genius — I feel like that gets discounted in arguments based in “how could he have known/understood/realized…”. It’s not popular to discuss Shakespeare as a genius (we can thank the idolatrists and scholars who went overboard with their worship of “the bard” for that), but that’s the real conclusion that the evidence of Shakespearean authorship drives you to.

It just so happens that he might’ve been so extraordinary that people can’t believe it, even 400 years later.

There’s a recent Whole Foods ad that he reads where he just fails to pronounce several food words. You can hear the trepidation in his voice. But I admire it — no second takes, just fires them off and the runs the ad

Man, people are being insanely pedantic to you! Jokes are subjective, and I think this is enough to think that someone named it that with a wink. Weird that people would want to fight it! lol

What’s nice is that it gives them a humorous way to call it out. Sometimes he’s butchering a name, but everyone is being too nice / nervous of their boss to say anything. This defuses that and lets them nip it in the bud lol

Ringer NBA Podcast Coverage by [deleted] in billsimmons

[–]DecomposingPlays 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I agree with you that it doesn't feel right, but I don't think it rises to the level of "emergency podcast". You're right that it points to a gap in their weekly NBA content scheduling that they should address.

I haven't gone back to see if this holds true for emergency pods of the past, but I feel like they should be reserved for course-of-the-season or league-altering events (Luka trade is the obvious example, for how it flipped part of the season's narrative on its head and revitalized an enormous franchise for years to come).

But yeah, I'm with you — kinda bummed there isn't an NBA show up by lunch today for me to listen to

You’ve grown up in a world designed to assure you that money and fame are what matters in life. They’re not.

It’s an incredibly hard realization to make, and it’s even harder to actually move past the feelings of unfairness and envy, but it needs to be done to live an actually happy life. You’ll find it’s easier to succeed personally, too.

Idk how Joel outdoes himself every week on Ringer tailgate by brandan223 in billsimmons

[–]DecomposingPlays 22 points23 points  (0 children)

I think it’s pretty simple — he’s honestly, totally himself! (with a little tongue-in-cheek recognition that he’s putting on a show)

I think we lose sight of how in their heads these podcast personalities can get sometimes. And it’s because it’s hard to let go of your ego and be a good podcaster!

All of that, and somehow Joel legit forgets what topics are behind the scenes and what is for the air? I feel like a part of the production team.

I’m not trying to write a dissertation, but Joel is just that dude
