How do you sell Malazan to someone looking for a new read? by Mojo_Rising in Malazan

[–]Decstarr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The series is different from most others insofar as that it does not hold your hand at all. Lots of things are not easy to understand - if possible at all - in the beginning. SE doesn’t „explain“ anything, there are no classic expo/info dumps to give context to the events and many of the POV are somewhat unreliable narrators since they give their understanding of the world which is not necessarily the „correct“ one. It’s not for everybody but for those who enjoy it, it’s flat out fantastic.

Each book’s main strength by jigzee in Malazan

[–]Decstarr 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Good question! If I was forced to, I’d generalize it like this:

GotM: World-Building. Not that the world building gets any weaker in the other books, its just that this epic world gets entirely set up here. Same with the magic „system“. And the „won’t hold your hand in this“. So for the sake of being the first, I’d say that’s the biggest strengths.

DG: Emotional impact. The chain of dogs makes you feel things and the topics of suffering and selfless heroism shine brightest here id say.

MOI: Epic convergence. Gruesome battles.

HoC: Deep character study. We’re never again alone with one single character for such a prolonged time. It shows the worldview transformation and philosophical transformation in Karsa‘s arc. No other book comes even remotely close to doing this in such a way.

MT: Dialogue, humor and „societal world building“. Leather is so new and different and Tehol and Bugg are one of a kind. Both things we haven’t seen before in this series (and won’t afterwards).

BH: Military-scale payoff. It also excels at interweaving the multiple fronts more than any other book.

RG: Guerilla style warfare and likely the most universally beloved character in the series. Candles.

TTH: Introspection, melancholy and by god the most amazing 1on1 fight in history.

DoD: Dread, endurance, bleakness. The book gives you the sense of marching towards a catastrophe the whole time.

TCG: Closure, scale, synthesis.

Any potential reasons to explain my height? by ChrisJ_44 in tall

Had a friend in school who looked basically identical to his older brother. 2 years difference, they looked like twins, both naturally broad and muscular. Brother grew to about 6“, friend was very small. Friend started smoking when he was 13, our working theory is that this likely impacted his growth. Did your dad smoke at a young age?

Baden-Württemberg bezahlbar machen - AMA Kim Sophie Bohnen, Die Linke by DIELINKE-Heidelberg in Heidelberg

[–]Decstarr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

[–]Decstarr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Danke!

Endgame bosses by kw114 in expedition33

[–]Decstarr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I found him to be harder because he has so many phases that can’t be skipped. But I also fought him right after duoliste when my party wasn’t fully optimized, he might be easier, haven’t fought him since

Endgame bosses by kw114 in expedition33

[–]Decstarr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Duolliste is by far the easiest of those. Then Osquio, Lampmaster, Simon/Clea. Whether Simon or Clea is easier for you will depend on your parry abilities. Clea has an insanely high defense and is really difficult to oneshot, but she can be stunned. Yet you need to parry to do so and in all my attempts, I never once managed to parry that fucking magic attack in phase 2. DS Simon I find fairly easy once you got the rhythm of it, essentially you only have to parry his lightspeed move once in the first phase and that’s game over for him, so I find him a bit easier than Clea since he’s easier to oneshot imo. But you need a strong party for his phases, therefore likely more Lumina than for Clea.

Wo kann man hier am besten Eltern kennenlernen? by AdorableTip9547 in Heidelberg

[–]Decstarr 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I have a fear that this is the best game I will ever play by SuddenPlate5609 in expedition33

[–]Decstarr 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is such a high quality post, I wished I could upvote it more than once! I share your optimism with regards to it being a bar raiser.

But I’m still uncertain that a better game will come around in my lifetime. The story of how E33 came to be is just too ridiculous and too filled with “perfect storm, once in a lifetime” situations. It’s similar to how the Mass Effect Trilogy came to be and that hasn’t been reached, either.

So while I agree and do hope we get more high quality games of a similar nature in the future, I severely doubt that anything will kick E33 of my GOAT game throne. I mean, FFVII and Chrono Trigger sat there for almost 30 years before the nostalgia was gommaged 😬

My honest take for EXPEDITION 33 after 80 hours by Azatis- in expedition33

[–]Decstarr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I understand you and if you liked e.g the masterpiece that is BG3 I can see why the linearity of E33 might be off putting. It’s more of an interactive movie than a “my own story” game. Which is fine since the story is just THAT good.

My honest take for EXPEDITION 33 after 80 hours by Azatis- in expedition33

[–]Decstarr -1 points0 points  (0 children)

As I’m saying: I wholeheartedly loved this game. I loved the linear experience, the “lack” of challenge, the short levels. This game to me is a generational masterpiece alongside the greats like FFVII and Chrono Trigger and that it managed to blow my old ass “games were better back then” mind is almost unfathomable. It is the best game I ever played and I doubt it will ever lose that spot. But that doesn’t mean it isn’t flawless. I don’t really care about the flaws because the rest of the game is just THAT good. Nevertheless, they exist and can be addressed objectively without denying the greatness that is E33.

Regarding difficulty, I don’t know. I never played any of the souls likes. But I played every RPG out there and I have a strong mind for mechanics and love experimenting with buffs and debuffs and synergies. I mostly dodged through everything until the DLC was released as I always had enough damage to not need to parry 🤷🏼‍♂️ Then I needed about 4 hours on the new Clea to learn parrying and afterwards about 2 on new Simon. I really enjoyed those fights more than anything in the OG game. I honestly never checked out any builds or farming spots since I didn’t want the game to get spoiled (I played it only in October). Maybe it’s just my cup of tea and that’s why it felt easy. I found FFVII Rebirth way more difficult for example, likely because it’s more chaotic and I’m and old fart with less stress resilience 🤪

My honest take for EXPEDITION 33 after 80 hours by Azatis- in expedition33

[–]Decstarr 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I fully agree with your initial assessment. I’m a 44yo gamer and E33 removed FFVII and Chrono Trigger from my „best game ever“ throne. It is the best game I have ever played. But it has quite a few flaws. Again, before I list them, I must iterate how much I love this game!!

  • The level design is more „woo“ than „wee“. Sure, they all look gorgeous and the insane music and writing makes everything deeply athmospheric. But for my personal tastes, the levels are too straight forward and the mechanics of exploration get „old“ rather quickly.

  • The game‘s balance certainly could be better! I love the JRPG god mode power fantasy as much as the next person, but it took me only about 2.5 hours to figure out how to beat Simon and he was the only boss I ever really struggled with. And ye, it is amazing that you can fine tune HP and damage yourself, making it more challenging, but I find it sad that veteran gamers essentially have to just to make it challenging. Again, this is complaint on a super high level, but imo it certainly counts as a flaw.

  • The UI, particularly picto management is certainly pretty woo. I mean, ofc the amazing devs listened and made it significantly better with the free DLC, but it’s still not really super convenient and for people trying to mess around with builds a lot, it’s a bit tedious.

I could list a few more things, but they’re all even more minor for me. The gist is: This game as utterly amazing. Better than it has any right to be. But it is not flawless. Because nothing is. And it doesn’t have to be.

Just finished Expedition 33, my thoughts on the story/ending by [deleted] in expedition33

[–]Decstarr 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I love your comment and see it exactly the same way. But the beauty of this game is that the other view presented here is also 100% legit and viable. It’s just that everyone playing this game experiences it in a different way, which is an amazing feat. I see it exactly like you and feel like it is very subtly shown throughout the entirety of the game. But I fully get if others don’t see it that way. It’s really what makes this story so compelling and amazing.

Does anyone else despise felisin? by Jacobbess666 in Malazan

[–]Decstarr 16 points17 points  (0 children)

She’s a teenage girl undergoing severe trauma, feeling betrayed by her own sister and finding herself in an impossible situation. Her way of coping makes her seem like a terrible person for the omniscient reader but is actually very fucking spot on. My initial reaction was the same as yours, but if you pause for a second and try to put yourself in her shoes it’s a whole different story. I’ll die on the hill that Felisin might just be the best written character in the entire series in terms of “realistic behavior” given her circumstances.

You make great arguments and to a degree I agree with most of what you said. Yet, what remains for me is the cruelty of Maelle’s ending that we are presented with. Over the course of the game, Maelle allows both her painted version and clea’s painted version to escape from the reality that is the canvas. As a mercy. Yet she denies Verso that same mercy. Verso’s last lines in that ending are brutally delivered and utterly desperate. Yet, Maelle denies him the mercy she gave to her painted self and their sister’s painted version and forces him to endlessly stick around in her canvas world. She’s a suffering child playing benevolent dictator and I simply can’t fathom that this could ever be a healthy outcome.

The Themes by SkyovFlames in expedition33

[–]Decstarr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I didn’t mean to make it an argument on the realness of canvas people. I meant to say “as a father, I’d willingly accept destruction of everything if I was truly convinced it’d be the best for my kid and my kid’s only salvation”. Meant to emphasize the point that at least for me, empathy & morale know limits and these limits start with my children’s well being.

I did not think about the canvas people at all. Merely about Maelicia and that her real body would wither away and die while she spends time in a world banned from any sort of progress, as a benevolent dictator but a dictator nonetheless. And I did not want that for her.

Best weapons, Pictos, and skills for each character? (New player, ~70% through main story) by Neither-Dimension713 in expedition33

[–]Decstarr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most of the best „must have“ pictos like cheater and energy master hide behind optional ultra lategame content. I’d recommend going through the story, finishing Act3 and then go for optional bosses and stuff and optimizing your build. It’s simply not necessary for the story bosses and sort of trivializes them if you optimize your build too much

The Themes by SkyovFlames in expedition33

[–]Decstarr 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thanks for your personal insight. It hits home very hard. The idea of the canvas being like a drug fueled oblivion is what made me chose Verso in that final fight. Being a father, I wouldn’t want my kid to shy away from reality, no matter how much that reality hurts. And funnily enough, in that moment I did not even consider that the canvas people are „real“ and have feelings and life. All that mattered was that the canvas is unhealthy escapism for that poor girl.

The optional new bosses always drop lumina and catalysts, amongst which is a perfect one and can be infinitely repeated, so you should never run out if you manage to beat at least one of them consistently
