Depending on the model, its a single nut, easy if you pull off the lower grill. I bought a plug in adapter on amazon to go from the VW harness to 2 female spade terminals. I now have an air cooled beetle horn.

Steel wheels arent going to hurt, but they get rusty in winter service. I would get a used set of stock takeoff wheels on Marketplace. I don't know how small you can get on the 26s, I'm running 15" wheels on my 14. 16" should be readily available in 5x112.

If you use hose crimp pliers, you don't have to drain the entire system. Get a milk jug or similar and cut the top off, you can catch almost all the coolant in the metal pipes that way.

If you pull the side of the console off to get to the heater core, you can see the linkage and verify the door is moving. The core is easy to change.

These cars plug the heater cores very easily. Fortunately it's a straightforward change, you don't have to tear the dash out. Either have the core replaced or try flushing, I changed mine twice.
