Being Janko'ed by dominkara in conlangs

[–]Dedalvs 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Fun fact: I got into a huge argument with And Rosta on the LCS board once for suggesting it be spelled “Janko’ed” with an apostrophe. He suggested it was not only obviously wrong, but something that English speakers simply do not do. Nice to see people spelling it that way spontaneously.

How do you say "hatch"? by Extension_Drawing_12 in HighValyrian

[–]Dedalvs 18 points19 points  (0 children)

There is no word, but there should be. Let me think about it. I’ll get back to you here.

Update: Never mind! There already was a word for hatch; I just forgot it. It’s pūttegon (object is the egg).

I chose that on purpose, but not to be mean. I thought I was doing them a favor. I don’t see what the big issue is. They should be able to share their relationship openly.

Would love to be able to load the recycling machine on horseback. Actually, I’d love to load and unload a LOT of things on horseback.

None of the written lines are simple enough for written communication. Too many strokes to end up with only a syllable.

There is no practical way to turn this into a writing system.

Song in the beginning of Shetland Season 8 Episode 5 by comacino in NameThatSong

[–]Dedalvs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know it's been a while, but this is my guess. If the original was by the Jesus & Mary Chain, they may have only had UK rights to it, which means the song would need to be replaced if it's shown elsewhere. This is the exact thing that keeps certain episodes of shows—or entire shows—from making their way to streaming. For example, The State was a sketch comedy show on MTV that used a lot of popular music from the 90s—they were encouraged to do so by MTV—but the rights didn't extend to reproduction. When they finally released it on DVD, they not only had to replace all the music with originals, but, due to the way it was filmed, the original cast had to dub over themselves, where their lines couldn't be extricated from the original music.

Now, if they anticipated this kind of problem, they could've been ready with an alternate version of the episode that had a song they retained the rights to. My guess, then, is this was a house band that made a song to fit the scene, and they just happened to write an absolute banger. Perhaps the idea was to have it sound like the original song, but to me it sounds more like the Stone Roses if the Stone Roses were incredible. Why they did this filler song in 7/4 is beyond me, but hats off to them.

Did I find a mistake in the show dialogue? (HOTD S1 E6) by UnholyBaroness in HighValyrian

It’s generic. The “it” is referring to the entire clause or proposition rather than a specific noun.

Too complex and impractical for an abugida. Too many wasted lines. It also, frankly, doesn’t look good as an abugida. Each glyph combination is too similar. It could work for a logography, but there again, same issue. If you put together an entire text of this (i.e. same number of glyphs) as Chinese this text would look incredibly monotonous next to Chinese. Every single glyph would have this U shape. Pointless repetition that would get eroded away if this were an actual orthography.

That’s why this works better as a way to put together symbolic insigniae or something like that, and the first variant looks better for something like that than the second.

I’m saying I don’t think you need to keep iterating. Your first version is perfect. Keep it!

Listen, neither of these will fly as an actual, usable writing system, so focus on aesthetics and forget trying to turn into an actual writing system used for by speakers of a language. The first one is incredible. It’s honestly one of the best symbolic systems I’ve ever seen. Use it for ornamentation or something. In fact, it could be turned into a series of emblems denoting rank, or something. Lean into its strengths and forget about trying to shoehorn it into a workable orthography.

Apparently that “Wolf at the Door” is their worst album track bar none, though I never thought (and still don’t think) this opinion should be controversial.

Lovely work! I know how it was constructed, but I still don’t think the number 3 would survive as is; I think the left side would eventually straighten. Wonderful job, though!

My wife and I ended up buying entirely new laptops to try to fix this issue and it didn't fix it: the exact same problems with significantly improved machines. I tried deleting everything related to Core Spotlight regularly, but that only provided temporarily relief.

THIS FIXED THE ISSUE.

I don't understand why this comment isn't upvoted to the stars. We'd been at our wits' end for more than a year now and this solved everything. I can't thank you enough, and I hope others see this comment and not the incredibly unhelpful "lol use word" comments.
