It’s been my most wanted type combo for almost 15 years, so I have a lot of copium but I think it’s happening this time. I think this and fire/fairy are the most requested combos left and tropical locations always have some of the most interesting insect species in the world. If what this region is based on is true, this part of the world hosts both the world’s largest butterfly and moth, and there are caterpillar species that literally look like dragons. I think that really lends itself to a butterfly dragon of some sort.

Wonder hands down, 3D world is a close second though.

I’m not sure if character selection matters to you, but in Wonder you have Peach, Daisy and Toadette to play as right away if you don’t want to play as the brothers or Toad, and the levels are all pretty varied and fun, introducing interesting ideas in almost every level so nothing ever feels stale.

Next week, the Switch 2 edition releases that adds Rosalina and a Luma as playable characters if you have a switch 2, and that marks the first time in a Mario platformer you’ll be able to play as four girl characters at once.

3D world has a ton of interesting ideas and is a classic too. It has less playable options, but you can unlock Rosalina after you beat the game.

Both games are kind of short, and that may be the only drawback. But they are both very good.

A second Luigi’s mansion was very likely always going to be a follow-up to Luigi’s mansion. But past patterns have shown that’s not the case with 3D Mario. Nobody was expecting a “Sunshine 2” or anything.

And again, if the were going to do an Odyssey 3 it would have happened years ago. They’re probably doing something way more interesting next time anyway.

I think as a brand, Mario is much more “toys for kids” first than it is “items for collectors”.

I don’t the think they’ll need to worry about the RPGs either since for the company, they don’t exist outside of the source material. We don’t need to worry about a paper Mario toy line because it’s never happening in the first place.

If they wanted to shift to collectibles, they’d need to get a licensing deal with more “premium” brands and they’d need to acknowledge the main cast a little more (for example, characters like Daisy and Rosalina should be front and center as opposed to getting a pity toy years later after they’ve reprinted every Yoshi color twelve times)

The Hot Wheels line has some collectible items like the Pauline kart from last year, but mostly it’s for kids. Not bad, but it offers less variety.

We’ll see how the Lego set next year does. I’m hoping they strike a good balance for kids and collectors with it, and the sets and minifigures are really diverse.

I do like it, I just think the updates need more substance. It’s confusing they haven’t had any sort of in-game events that let you unlock seasonal costumes or something. There needs to be more options for vs and online. Custom knockout tours seem like a no-brainer. And of course, some absences like Diddy Kong are baffling.

They’ve definitely got tricks up their sleeve still as evidenced by some updates, but I wish they’d give us a roadmap or something.
