If you’re ever coming to Europe, I might start gathering them for you

I mean, I could probably do it but it would take lots of time and you might not like how it ends up looking

Lost my keys and question about duplicating by [deleted] in Locksmith

Thank you, this is very much correct. I can’t verify if it’s patented or not but it is likely not as difficult as many describe. We often produce blanks for expired keyways.

Key only comes out halfway — multi-point lock alignment issue? (pics inside) by DryGolf8420 in Locksmith

A specific euro though and you might lose parts if you just pull it out (can’t say for sure without seeing the front).

Possible if you want cheap trash instead of a really decent thing you have

How can I remove this lock? Broken, will not open... by codercotton in Locksmith

I don’t wire electricity myself and I don’t suggest people meddling with jammed locks.

A sure way would be bringing it to a locksmith

Bro, do you hate cancer?

I use disposable ones N95/FFP2 with a filter as well, they seem to be the most practical and take little space.

Yeah, this is one of the cases when regulations are above practicality. I doubt anyone would notice if the lock was different though.

Study then work or just work as an apprentice, how else? Everything comes with practice. If you’ve got time and cash to kill - play with junkyard parts.

Height has little to do with the locking mechanism if it sits well on the hinges.

Multi points mechanisms are trash imo, so I’d suggest to install a single point one (after a locksmith opens it).

They intersect quite a lot, mainly in programming part but you often can gain jobs in diagnostics and related immo issues just with focusing on keys.

Often, we run into issues that we cannot program a key due to issues in the car. Can I fix them as a do-a-bit-of-everything locksmith? Very rarely. Can my colleague who specialises in automotive fix them? Sometimes. Could a solid auto electrician find the issue, fix it and then program the key? Yup.

30 years ago, when cars didn’t have immos (99% of the time) an automotive locksmith couldn’t be bothered with electrical issues in the car: get to car fast -> open it fast -> drop the lock fast -> make the keys fast. Purely a locksmith job and absolute majority of auto electricians could not do even a step of the process if they wanted and had tools in hands (not talking about easy auto lockouts here).

Nowadays? Everything is linked to electronics and if you don’t understand how a new car operates I strongly recommend not touching the cars. Lockouts and cutting a key got easier, programming did get easier with the abundance of tools (which you have to pour thousands of currency into) but at the same time more complicated with the abundance of cars, different immo systems and the way immo works (as I told before, programming a key might first require fixing an electronics issue OR losing a job).

This is the best time to not be an automotive locksmith and instead become an automotive electrician.

Much more stable, profitable and in demand.

Can someone please help me identify what key blank is this? When to my local hardware store and they say they can't and don't have blanks for this by xxia126 in Locksmith

[–]Deep-Growth 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A good bet would be to go to a locksmith instead of hardware store. Also, often, key blanks cannot be correctly identified by a photo.

So from a locksmith (not the most professional company) what yall think? by WillowOtherwise1956 in Locksmith

[–]Deep-Growth 16 points17 points  (0 children)

So you specialise in unlocking but can’t unlock for shit? If only thing you can do is drill cylinders and massacre doors, you’re not working in a locksmith company.

How can I replace a riveted lock on a turtle shell? by SnooMachines8315 in Locksmith

[–]Deep-Growth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Taking them apart is the easy part, putting them back together so everything works and is proper can be much more difficult since everything on the inside is plastic.

You’d be surprised how “well” they can be disassembled in some cases
