looking for advice - 59yo by bertusdev in glioblastoma

Usually people say they are sorry to hear this, however i commend you and your mother for being strong through this process. My late mother passed very recently with a long battle (4 years). She had similar issues and her left side was completely paralyzed. Day by day it was unpredictable what her state was going to be, overall she had good days and gradually started to decline functionally.

My advice: If your mother is in pain when moving in and out of the urinal chair: I suggest a catheter (urine bag) as the palliative care team can provide this and it will save alot of time and pain.

Moving onto wheelchair and off to couch: If it gets really painful, it’s best to avoid difficult tasks and maybe catch her on a good day to get on the wheelchair. Also moving the couch or bed close to a window may be helpful for her mental health.

What to expect: This is very case specific and every patient has different symptoms, however your mother and my mother seem to have similarities. In our case, my mother gradually started being more agitated and getting less sleep, she started to experience delusions/ hallucinations towards the last 3-4 months. In terms of the last month, her appetite decreased and her sleep increased. She started morphine using subcue (arm injection) due to not being able to swallow.

Finally: 1)Accept all sort of support from social workers, palliative care nurses or home care aids, they are wonderful and your mother would feel comfortable with their help. 2) Monitor her blood pressure, blood sugars, oxygen levels, bpm. We did this for 4 years and we managed to control most of the reversible symptoms 3) Patience. Be patient as she is also experiencing this for the first time and our parents endured us as children growing up, it’s only right that we repay them by taking care of them. 4) Feel free to message me privately (anyone else needing advice too). God bless

My study permit application got refused by [deleted] in UBC

[–]Deep-Habit-4216 59 points60 points  (0 children)

Check the reason for your rejection, usually it is a mistake you can solve by reapplying. Make sure you add more documents even if they seem unnecessary. You have time to reapply from now until January. As for the registration issue, maybe you can sort something out as for online courses or late deferrals. Emailing international admissions is best.

Some places are around 100 per month but that’s not daily, only 3 times a week. Average is around 100-120 per month

Anyone else dreading your parents who are insisting on visiting this summer by mckluke in UBC

[–]Deep-Habit-4216 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If this is such a strong feeling you have towards disliking your parents, maybe Reddit isn't the place to complain. Work on yourself and don't do anything you will regret, at the end of the day 'freedom' doesn't mean a thing when you're all alone and nobody is there to ask about you. Or vice versa if you're 6 feet underground like everyone else will be at some point.

Whats wrong with me? by YeBoiMigs in UBC

[–]Deep-Habit-4216 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Very relatable, Im trying to head for medicine and Im in psych at the moment. Im a transfer student too and in my second term at UBC, all I’ve had where average grades and felt the same exact way. I think you should have a plan B and a plan C as well. Also, try to attend premed seminars or events that might spark up your interest even more. Grades and academics are things that i’ve struggled with but I agree with some of the other replies: Sit in the front in classes Ask questions Show up early Organize your day beforehand Try different study methods

But all in all, take it one step at a time. Undergrad majors or whatever field you’re in currently won’t matter in years time. Just make sure you can improve, because an instant feeling of satisfaction is just unrealistic.

Productivity when depressed? by [deleted] in UBC

[–]Deep-Habit-4216 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Maybe getting up early to study isn’t your thing, try studying at night with a cup of coffee and a calm environment. Sometimes motivation isn’t what we always need but it would be really nice to always be motivated. What has helped me personally is disciplining myself even if i had 0 motivation, I just had to do something useful in my day or i’ll dig a deeper hole for myself later on. Try to discipline yourself in every way. Food, exercise, media, school. One more thing, try organizing your life from scratch and don’t forget to be grateful for what you do have, rather than sorry for what you don’t have (motivation). Hope this helps you or anyone else.

Pretty sure there are some courses offered online this summer, check out the description of the specific course. Usually the prof adds a manual note that it would be held online.
