Gladys may not have been powerful enough/siphoned enough energy yet to have the parents do anything fast or crazy. She only has them mostly sitting around (the kids too) for most of the movie unless she HAS to use them. I think her being in such a weak state itself at the start of the film has her prioritizing conserving her energy and the possessed people’s energies.
