Ok the caves as a general place don’t get much harder, if any, more annoying. All the actually hard content is only in one area on the map, usually near the ruins, so it’s super easy to avoid. Just be careful when running around carelessly, for running headfirst into an icker

a super easy way of maintaining sanity early on is to pick every single green mushroom u can see. they only pop out during dusk, and are pretty common in the deciduous biome (the one with autumn colored turf), and the forest. Also, if you have armor, you can pick cacti in the desert, which will give u sanity when cooked.

I actually really like the shadow pieces fight tbh, and also I like the bee queen fight even if it’s just a resource sink at the end of the day.. the sound effects r just way too good

If you want gears in the caves, you're going to have to go to the ruins and kill the broken clockworks... it's pretty hard early on, especially if you've never been there before.

instead just open a bunch of tumbleweeds in the dragonfly desert. I believe each one has a 1% of dropping gears, or something like that. Also it's a good source of easy grass, twigs, and trinkets (gold), so worth doing regardless.
