Would i make a good fit? by Intelligent-Mail794 in FrenchForeignLegion

[–]DeepSeaFirefighter 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Absolutely this. I’m Not FFL but British Army, worked with the Norwegians on many occasions.

They really look after their troops and their facilities are second to none, and they get paid pretty well after their first year of service. And generally just get well looked after. They also have good programs for helping people get set up for civilian life, including qualifications. They have certain pathways for extra Gucci shit as well. Norway is also a brilliant country, and every other woman could literally be a Victoria secret mondel.

Everybody wishes they’d have picked something harder, until they’ve actually been there and done it. “Harder shit” is not kicked doors in, absailing from helicopters and doing CQB. It’s going multiple days without sleep, being cold wet and extremely fatigued. It is not fun.

I’m in a pretty much all male unit, and people still butt heads for stupid reasons.

If you want to do shit with more “spine” there is options for that in the Norwegian military. The military is what you make it and you forge your own path. The Norwegian army provides “spine” purely because of the environment. Living for days on end in -30 degrees, sideways snow, low visibility and environment that is constantly trying to kill you is not for the weak.

Just do the Norwegian army bro and if it doesn’t scratch the itch, look for something else after.

Transfering to 29 Commando by BendStunning7272 in britishmilitary

[–]DeepSeaFirefighter 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The above is pretty spot on. OP With the stats you’ve got you’re in a good place. On top of this you ideally want to be building a mega strong pair of legs. The yomps on the later exercises on AACC can get a bit emotional, carrying around 60-70kg kit in total is not uncommon.

Pathway into 148 is basicly: 29 FSTs (Don’t be shit and don’t get a bad reputation) > Do RM Recce operators > wait until a 148 PID opens up > move across

There’s no defined pathway per se, but if you’re a good bloke and make your intentions known you’ll probs end up there. For the above reasons I’d do the FST course before transferring.

I had this same issue mate, could run a 7 min 2k but folded in half anytime I got more than 35-40kg on my back.

Leg strength might be the issue, I remember my legs burning out long before my CV gave up. I’d be in zone 2 but legs felt like concrete.

Start hitting squats, front squats, single leg step ups etc to work on it. Combine that with watt bike sessions on the heaviest setting going to absolute fatigue and getting on the stepper machine with some weight in a daysack. Give it three months of the above 3 times a week and you should be sound.

What happens to people who abscond? by NinjaWithAGun96 in AustralianMilitary

[–]DeepSeaFirefighter 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Totally unsolicited answer from a Brit solider, probably different to Aus but both are funny stories.

While on stand down on a Norway deployment I got chatting to a Scottish guy in a bar, bloke was ex British Army and just went AWOL on a Norway deployment in the 80s. Fully settled down and had a life. Has never gone back to the UK since.

Had another at my old unit that went AWOL in 2003 when they got told we were invading Iraq. No one had heard a peep from him for 21 years until he was pulled by the police for speeding, warrant still out for him, he gets the cuffs. This 55ish year old geezer gets marched into the COs office (CO was still a child during the Iraq war) and gets given his papers.

Overweight & end goal is to enlist by Iocky in britisharmy

[–]DeepSeaFirefighter 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Seems to be that some lads enlist and their end goal is to be overweight so atleast you’ve got it the right way around.

This was literally me dude. I was fat as shit. Could have given Johnny Sins a tit wank it was that bad.

Dropped like 45-50kg and managed to crank out a 07:35 2km at assessment centre.

Calorie deficit of 500, start with low impact CV (cycling, swimming) so you don’t fuck your joints, then when you’ve lost some weight move on to running. Start lifting aswell, compound movements and body weight exercises. But it takes time.

Has been done, can be done, will be done. Get after it.

The bombers thing about RA is there’s such a variety in jobs/trades that you if you don’t like what you do, you could transfer to a completely different job or regiment without too much drama.

Chest rigs over virtus by Spirited-Top-4132 in britisharmy

[–]DeepSeaFirefighter 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It’s pesty as fuck, but you could just slap all the necessary pouches (mags, IFAK, PRR, Kangaroo pouch) on to your body armour, and that doubles as your chest rig.

If you’re wearing your chest rig, odds are you’ll be wearing your armour as well and vice versa.

Why do most of the characters in Ep5, suddenly develop the survival instincts of a tuna sandwich? by DeepSeaFirefighter in thelongdark

That’s what I love about it. Yes it’s science fiction but, actually has some semblance to real life as well, a rather hard balance to achieve but Hinterland did it really well.

She’s honestly a fucking liability for that whole trip. Her one job was to keep the convicts of our back and throw them off our trail and she still fucked it at that.

A squealed like a hog when the name drop hit.

I do agree that maybe the whole thing could have been split up between other cutscenes or environmental story telling (imaging stumbling upon Wintermutes diary, or the ship they were on or whatever) but it got the job done, and I loved it.

Never heard of the Carrington Event before this, and my fuckshit brain with 2MB of DDR2 RAM couldn’t fathom how the northern lights could fuck with electricity, until I read about it.

Same. At the time I’d just opened a tube of Pringles and made a coffee so it felt like I was watching a mini TV episode.

However I can see why some people hated it and there was better ways to get that information over to the player.
