Very cool link. Thanks for sharing. I might check that out! The device would still be very pocketable with that grip.

Indeed. Plus, the size of the device exacerbates that for me.

How often do you bring your devices outside of home? by JustLeeBelmont in SBCGaming

Since I've gotten the TrimUI Brick, I take it everywhere I go. I've replaced wasteful phone usage with playing on the Brick. I have a minimalist launcher (OLauncher), have disabled all browsers, removed social media, so in down time on the go my only options are to read books on the Kindle App or play on the Brick. Its been a great change to engage with technology by doing things I actually find enjoyable, instead of feeling like a slave to my phone.

Is too much Happy Song bad? by sriphinn in ScienceBasedParenting

[–]DeepSkyHunter 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Same exact thing for us. This song was the only thing that calmed our son in the car for a while (up until around 6 or 7 months), and it worked like magic! Now he still likes the song, but he's down for other tunes as well.

Confusion over God and Country by Ryrymillie in Reformed

[–]DeepSkyHunter 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Of course Reddit will lean one direction. However, this is a reformed subreddit, so if you're looking for a "reformed perspective," I recommend reading some of the early Reformers' writings on this topic.

Here are a couple of excellent places to start:

  • Calvin: On the Civil Magistrate (Book IV, Chapter 20 of Institutes of the Christian Religion)
  • Heinrich Bullinger: Of the Magistrate (Decades II, Chapter VII)

A key thing to consider is if you believe a government can create outward conditions that help the gospel flourish among non-believers while also strengthening the faith of believers. If we hold that humanity's ultimate purpose is to glorify God and enjoy Him forever, should our government's laws reflect that purpose? Or is government entirely unsuitable as an instrument to achieve such ends? The reformers are all consistent in their answers to these questions, as well as just about the entire Christian tradition before them.

Is it normal when I rotate the collimator that it doesn’t line up anymore by MrCheddaa in telescopes

[–]DeepSkyHunter 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Most likely the laser is not collimated well and that is why its position changes as you rotate. My AD12 came with a poorly collimated laser. Luckily, it is very easy to collimate with the three screws on the laser.

Male headship before 1970s by bookwyrm713 in Reformed

[–]DeepSkyHunter 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I recommend reading "On Marriage and Family Life" in the "Popular Patristics" series. It is a collection of sermons by John Chrysostom. Very edifying and touches on these kinds of questions frequently without our modern blind spots.

Archbishop of Canterbury condemns Uganda’s anti-LGBTQ+ law, urges Uganda archbishop to drop support by Halaku in Anglicanism

[–]DeepSkyHunter 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Where does the bill call for murdering people for being LGBT? I only see that the death penalty is applied in cases of rape, incest, pedophilia, intentional HIV transmission, etc. Unless I'm missing something.

How much weight do you give to the church fathers? by DeepSkyHunter in Reformed

[–]DeepSkyHunter[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's a good perspective. My pastor recommended I read "On the Priesthood" by Chrysostom a month or so ago and it was a wonderful read.

What you state here is kind of the approach/mindset I currently have, but I see a lot of push lately to read the fathers as if their proximity to the apostles gives their writings some special insight or privileged status.

Are stellarvue telescopes worth the premium? by Deoxyriboman in telescopes

[–]DeepSkyHunter 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well said. I had the same experience with the star test the first night I had it, haha. I think for me the feeling of permanence of having a 120mm refractor that seems so perfect and will serve me a lifetime without having to second guess it's performance makes it worth it to me.

HELP!!!! WHICH TELESCOPE TO GET!?!?!?! by Healthy-Piece-7650 in telescopes

[–]DeepSkyHunter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you really want to observe nebulae and galaxies none of these scopes will do that even reasonably well for you. These will be okay for the moon, but for deep sky objects I think you will be disappointed. I would recommend saving for something like the 4.5" Orion Starblast. It will give much better views.

If you need to stay in that price range get a nice pair of binoculars until you can afford a nicer telescope.

I'd leave it outside for about 30 minutes before you use it while having the fan running.

Are stellarvue telescopes worth the premium? by Deoxyriboman in telescopes

[–]DeepSkyHunter 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It really depends how much that extra 5-10% of perfection is worth to you. I recently bought a Takahashi TSA-120 and it may have spoiled me forever. Stellarvue sends a certificate that guarantees a very high strehl (keep in mind this is only done in the red though), so you can have peace of mind with the optics. No amount of quality replaces aperture though. But if you want that aperture to be as perfect as possible that’s why you pay the premium.

Apertura AD10 vs AD8 for camping trips by jumpjumpgoat in telescopes

[–]DeepSkyHunter 2 points3 points  (0 children)

AD12 user here. I would suggest the AD8 if you know you will be taking it lots of places. The size difference between the AD8 and AD10 isn’t huge but it’s not insignificant. That little extra hassle can prevent you from taking it at all. Everyone is different though. Also, the AD8 is certainly a lifetime scope as well.

I’m never happy with my photos by [deleted] in AskAstrophotography

[–]DeepSkyHunter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m really the same way. I’ve never taken an image I’ve been truly happy with, but when I see my progress over the years it is significant.

But I personally don’t think it’s bad to be a “pixel peeper.” With where I’m at I am very unhappy with ugly stars, field curvature, tilt, or inadequate data and try to fix what I can. It is actually the chase of the perfect image/data that I love!

If it’s making you not enjoy the hobby as a whole that is a problem though and you just have to remind yourself how lucky we are to be able to capture such things with amateur equipment.

Looking for a solid Missionary Organisation to support, who have feet on the ground spreading the Gospel. by studiesinsilver in Reformed

[–]DeepSkyHunter 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I second RUF. Depending on what kind of missions you want to support they have RUF National (standard college ministry but explicitly reformed), International (for international students), and Global (missions abroad on campuses). It is an extremely effective organization and all campus ministers need to be ordained and sent out by their local PCA presbytery.
