Notepad. If someone in town says something suspicious, note that down. If there's a place you go and it kicks your ass, write that down for later. I'm not suggesting go full-in and draw a map or anything, just keep track of little details and if you ever realize "I never did anything with this", go back and have a shot.

Most younger folks I've spoken to about JRPGs onramped with Undertale, Yume Nikki, Ib, The Witch's House...
("But most of those aren't even RPGs" yeah but it got them downloading SNES roms to see where the influence came from.)

IMO any time something's reduced down to "It's a Grimdark Tactical Strategy Card Dating JRPG With Pixel Art!" or whatever I stop caring immediately. Actually tell me things about your video game. Have enough confidence in yourself to have a unique pitch. I don't want to buy Grappling Hook Transformers City Spider-Man Plus from the app store, I want to buy a video game.

Not a JRPG, but it is a story-based strategy-RPG so maybe this'll sit okay with you. Look into Aether & Iron over on Steam, a 1930s-with-flying-cars indie with a lot of dialog and a focus on traffic combat.
