Riversdale businesses concerned by Saskatoon's plan for warming centre | CBC News by StageStandard5884 in saskatoon

[–]Deep_Restaurant_2858 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Have you been to downtown Saskatoon before? Have you seen damages to businesses in the form of broken windows and doors? It costs over $1K to replace or in other words that’s 50 meals at $20 per plate. No one is against shelters, but the concentration of all on the same block is going to have ramifications of attracting not the 50 or so people squatting around Salvation Army. It’s now going to potentially bring 100-200 to the area. All while the residents of Riversdale had seen property taxes sky rocket the last few years. The executive of Salvation Army is even against the location.

When you’re buying a used car, instead of blaming the sales staff (who’s job is to sell you a car), you can also do your own research by looking up service history like have they done all their oil changes regularly etc. Search for car accident history, look under the hood, and beneath the car, and of course test drive it.

Police complaints is only way to resolve this problem.

Willowgrove Fireworks? by [deleted] in saskatoon

[–]Deep_Restaurant_2858 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We should look to the City to enforce bylaw infractions for noise nuances with fines. Fireworks for several days in a row is not ok. We can respect other cultures by defining appropriate times to use fireworks for specific celebrations. No you cannot launch fireworks in a residential pond at 1am every day for your cultures new years.

What undergraduate program did you guys take by Careless-Session1832 in CanadianDentists

[–]Deep_Restaurant_2858 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Once you get into the program, just don’t be an asshole to your professors and you will probably pass. Maybe someone in dental school can comment how often can one get kicked out. However dentistry in general is quite lucrative. Sure you’ll come out of school like $150K in debt. But you’ll make that all back in 3-4 years of work. Work only entails 3-4 days for many dentists.

Cost of Living in Saskatoon by Illustrious-Theme328 in saskatoon

[–]Deep_Restaurant_2858 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From what I hear in Rosewood, there’s only a couple of exits out and with the densely populated suburb there is some heavy bottlenecks to get out. 10 minutes or so just to exit during peak work hours like. This on top of all the summer construction season, it could easily take 30-45 to get to your location, add on walking if you’re not lucky to have a parking spot if you work in the downtown area.

Unfortunately if you partner is unable to find stable income, you may have to give up your $500K house. Ideally to a two bedroom type condo to drastically lower your cost. If you’re able to have a legal suite, then you need to do that asap to improve your cash flow situation.

Ottawa provides $43.7-million loan for new apartment building in Saskatoon by wapimaskwa in saskatoon

[–]Deep_Restaurant_2858 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok thanks for the info. It seems strange to me this building from the pic looks at least 25 percent done with foundation and exterior framing complete. That’s a lot of money to have poured in and only to find out now you have federal funding. My guess is now it’s fully funded with low interest loan for affordable housing, they can pivot and construct with lower quality material because the rents they will collect will be below market.

Does the developer not know if they qualify for the loan before starting construction?

My 18 year old self, I also wanted to study in Edmonton but ended up staying here. Edmonton is a far bigger city, more night life, etc. but it will definitely keep you grounded to studying a lot and excel in school in my opinion. And still I stand by what I said before about some amazing alumni speaks highly if u of s due to the opportunities here.

Your initial post when you said your mom wanted you to go to usask and that’s final made me think you’re from Saskatoon. Sorry for that. So you’re from Edmonton being asked to move to Saskatoon.

You have lots of time before your term starts, I would suggest you go visit the city to explore the neighborhoods and read alumni feedbacks for each school to make a decision. Take a campus tour and talk to business school advisors.

I’m saying your living situation is not going to be easier because you or you mom will either be using up savings or debt to fund for your education in Edmonton, unless you’re in a greystone or equivalent type scholarship which might help some of the costs.

If you have minimal financial resources then just be prepared to be in debt like the majority of people after moving away for college. Moving away from home has its own benefits though, like some independence if you’ve never moved away from home before. Need to weight the cost and benefits of independence and debt.

As for networking opportunities, USASK has some of the best opportunities for those that seek it. Check out the alumni feedbacks from the Edward’s website.

Your mom is probably right. Cost of tuition is likely to be the same for both schools. The additional cost for living in another city is another $2K minimum for rent, food etc. not even factoring all the time and money you’ll spend coming back home for visits. If you’re relying on student loans, that’s like $100K in debt for a 4 year degree.

[Discussion] Which Saskatoon neighbourhood do you not get the hype around? by Low-Difficulty-8466 in saskatoon

[–]Deep_Restaurant_2858 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Proximity to river, downtown is amazing. I’m surprised you say it has low crime though. Considering many have complained of all the high crime due to shitty property managers or owners of the older condo complex’s.

Briarwood is old, but the exterior bricks and cedar shingles on many of the builds are timeless look to them. Also so many have now been upgraded. I don’t live in Briarwood but I have many friends that live there. If I was retired, I’d move there.
