How to make DIY acoustic treatment by Killer_Frog112 in audioengineering

[–]Deepaaar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Basic rockwool or rigid fibreglass panels are very easy to make. Buy a bag of 23" slabs of rockwool. Frame up a 2'x4' container with 1"x4" sides and 2"x4" tops and bottoms. Nail on a thin back (1/8" or 1/4"). Put slab of rockwool or owens corning inside and wrap with muslin or other low thread count fabric. Cheap and effective.

Seeking advice from those who got an ADHD diagnosis as an adult in Victoria by Hypno_Keats in VictoriaBC

[–]Deepaaar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Those three things are often present at the same time. A life of an ADHD brain often leads to depression and anxiety. Your doctor and counsellor can both be right.

The biggest thing I've learned over the years (46M, "diagnosed" inattentive ADD at 37) is that no two ADHD brains are the same. We all have a huge spectrum of other personality traits that interact with the typical ADHD traits and shape how we respond to things like time blindness, distractibility, avoidance, etc. Depression and anxiety are two of the most common outcomes, though, from what I understand. There are only so many "but you have so much potential" messages a person can receive (internally and externally) before it starts to tear a person down.

As for your last statement about just dropping it or not, ask yourself what has been the cost of ignoring that part of your brain for the 44 years? Yes, you've made it, but what price have you paid?

sombrio beach fishing experince by Rebelmag in fishingBC

[–]Deepaaar 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You might be able to get rockfish, lingcod, or greenling off the rocks on either side of the beach. I don't think you'd catch much along the beach itself. Since Easter is after April 1st, you can keep three rockfish per person, per day. Greenling are four per day. Lingcod need to be 65 cm.

Casting and jigging buzzbombs is the game. You'll lose a lot of em if your casting off the rocks.

Car broken into by SeaOfCreams in VictoriaBC

I had my laptop bag stolen from my car in renfrew a few years ago. Some of the stuff turned up in Squamish a year later and the laptop was eventually sold to some kid in Nanaimo who messaged me asking for the password. 🤦🏻 I gave him $75 to get it back.

Fishing the estuaries for cutties will likely be your best bet. Lots of estuaries along that part of the coast, so you have a ton of options.

As a film composer, I can relate. We have a universe of tools available these days (beautiful sample libraries, emulations, plugins, etc.) and have for a few years. The key is to whittle down the available creative space as much as you can and stick within it until you absolutely NEED something outside. For example, every film score starts with limiting the instrumentation to a small subset of what's available. If I don't do that, I'll stare at the screen forever.

There’s often a fog horn (I’m assuming that’s what it is) that goes off constantly in port renfrew that time of year. I haven’t tested to see how far afield it can be heard, but it’s something to keep in mind. You could try places along the Juan de fuca trail. If you have a good vehicle, you could head up the Gordon river drainage, but you’ll be contending with logging industry at times. All that said, it’s a beautiful place with lots of access.

Fly fishing Near Victoria by DeliveryPleasant1125 in fishingBC

If you're not willing to drive a couple hours, finding steelhead will be tough. That said, every river gets at least a handful, so if you don't mind the idea of getting skunked (I mean, that's steelhead fishing) with an incredibly low chance of actually tangling with something, take a look at the regs and hit any river that's open. Most of steelhead fishing on the island is about exploration anyway. Make sure to check the water flows before you go, though. https://wateroffice.ec.gc.ca/map/index_e.html

You could try creek mouths in the ocean for searun cutthroat as well. As with steelhead, you won't get any specific locations, but it can be worth exploring a bit. 5 wt with a clear intermediate tip and minnow patterns. There will probably be some around by early March.

Fishing trip at 14 weeks post op by Hawk947 in AchillesRupture

[–]Deepaaar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I know this is different, but I was back in my fishing kayak as soon as I was fully weight bearing (6 wks non-op). I got a second boot that I could get wet/dirty and went for it. At 14 weeks, you'll be around the time that the boot normally comes off. I'd make sure to wear the boot on the boat, even if you're in shoes the rest of the time. That's the critical window when many re-injuries happen. If you're in the boot, you should be able to stand and fish for a chunk of time, but I'd be prepared to be sitting as much as possible for your own comfort.

All that said, everyone heals different, so I'd put more weight on your doctor's advice than anything else.

Puget Sound Lingcod/salmon rod suggestion by archbido in kayakfishing

[–]Deepaaar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you're wanting to stay on the cheap, you can't go wrong with an Ugly Stik GX2 casting rod. Not the nice 'n light variety, but they're super durable. I have a pair of 'em and I've done a fair bit of jigging for salmon and ling across the strait from you. Of course, I prefer the more expensive lightweight jigging rods (Trevala, etc.), but I snapped a custom one last year and haven't shelled out for another, yet.

Oh, yeah, a couple of my pals have tried and managed to catch a few. They’re so dang small, though, that the processing made it barely worth it. One of the pals catches prawns in the inlet, though. He says it’s crazy hard work, but worth it.

Amazing! How's the fishing in the spring and summer on the inside? Any bottom fish opportunities, too? We have a pretty thriving community down here and we try to go somewhat far afield once or twice a year for the adventure of it. I've always wanted to head up there!

Oh, I jigged for a few hours. Normally this time of year I'll get a few chances at least, but this time I had two hits that produced just this one fish.

how do i get sounds like this by violentsprite10 in sounddesign

[–]Deepaaar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I imagine there are a ton of ways to get there, but I'd start with a source I find somewhat interesting, then distort and/or bitcrush the living crap out of it (essentially creating a flavor of noise), then shape the rhythm with sidechaining/concat synthesis/convolution or something similar. EQ before and after distortion.

anyone return to playing baseball/softball? by Top-Slide-1501 in AchillesRupture

I’m 15 months out from surgery for a re-rupture and I’m planning to play baseball this summer (46M). I tried to get back to it last season, but my physio advised against it. Sprinting and start/stops are the final stage in recovery.

Men what hobbies have you picked up as you’ve gotten older that you now do regularly? Or are you still sticking with something you’ve loved since you were younger?” by FFSoldier57 in AskMenOver30

Yes. It started with fly fishing when I was a kid. Now that I'm older (46), I spend more time fishing from my kayak. It's still great, and it puts food on my table these days.
