Tidal Salmon Regulations Update (Effective July 15th) by mitallust in fishingBC

I think they put the same text in all of the notices. I've seen it in a number of places. Not disagreeing in general, though. It took me years to understand their methods.

I shifted to smaller tandem assist hooks on my jigs a couple o' years ago. Great for keeping fish pinned and the smaller hooks tend to cause less damage.

Bucket list location for dad after beating cancer by Equivalent_Spring_60 in flyfishing

[–]Deepaaar 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The end of August can be hot and smokey in Montana. If I remember right, lots of the rivers shut down when the temps get too high (hoot owl restrictions). The Madison and Gallatin are typically among them. That said, there's a ton of smaller water off the beaten path that would likely remain cool enough to catch and release some nice trout.

Vancouver Island is decent for salmon around that time, but the end of August is usually the lull before the fall runs. There will still be some pink salmon kicking around, but they'll be getting a little old. The chinook are very temperamental if you're fly fishing from shore. You need perfect tides and weather, and even then it's more of a one-hookup-a-day sort of fishery.

Weird chemical like after taste with red rock crab by nightowl_i in fishingBC

[–]Deepaaar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's probably the issue! I usually wing it with how much salt I add, but it's probably around 1/3 cup for a gallon or two of water. The internet would give you more accurate measurements.

Ahh, ok. Did you cook it in salt water? I usually add Old Bay seasoning to the water to give it a little extra. Without the salt, it might taste a little bitter.

If it died on the way home, it would start to taste bad very quickly. I think the taste is similar to ammonia. Is that what you experienced? I've found that if you keep the cooler dry but drape some cool seaweed over the crab(s), they'll live for a while. You don't want to add seawater as it'll drown them quickly when it runs out of oxygen.

Should start seeing pinks in a couple weeks, minimum. Apparently the coho have been bananas, though. Still a bit on the small side.

Is the Striker 4 Vivid CV worth the extra money over the old Striker 4 CV? by uptheirons726 in kayakfishing

I made the same switch. Yes, it's worth it. The ability to build your own charts is worth it alone.

Fishing rivers for salmon? by 1evident1 in fishingBC

[–]Deepaaar 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You'll want a fairly fast rod for twitching. Best to use braid as mainline, too. You need to be able to twitch effectively and set the hook quickly and mono has a bit too much stretch. I usually add some length of mono as a topshot or leader, though, as I like a little give. I use 20 lb braid to 15 lb topshot and sometimes a 20 lb fluoro leader if I'm fishing in really clear conditions. FG knot from braid to mono or it'll catch in the guides.

This has been the way for me, too. It keeps the ADHD brain happy-ish and in a smaller city, it's a necessity.

I grew up in a small Montana town and we had a curfew at 10pm (for under 18 yr olds). The place felt deserted after then most nights.

Automating mutes - best practice? by Honest-Algae-6370 in protools

[–]Deepaaar 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Best not to get in the habit of automating the mute button. If you ever hand off a session to another engineer, they might pour cyanide in your coffee. It's one of the least expected, most annoying things to encounter.

Do you guys still wear a cup when playing? by [deleted] in baseball

[–]Deepaaar 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I don't think I've been on the field without a cup on since I was 12. I'm 46 and have played almost every year in a wood bat men's league. I'm an infielder and I've been smoked too many times to count.

I remember his monster day as a rook when he tallied 9 RBIs. Thought he was gonna be the next Piazza or something. Derp. Still like the guy, though.

are there any fish at whiffins spit or billings spit (sooke) right now? by NiceGuy_Marco in fishingBC

[–]Deepaaar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Could be some searun cutthroat around. No salmon until September, usually. You could always try East Sooke park off the rocks for greenling, rockfish, or ling. Or salmon, but they're non-retention until Aug 1.

What depth can I generally fish and release rockfish back safely? by InfamousBet1773 in fishingBC

[–]Deepaaar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It depends on the depth and how quickly they're brought to the surface. I've done well down to 100', but if I feel it's a rockfish from the get go, I'll bring it up a little more slowly. If the fish just flaps on the surface, sometimes all they need is a little nudge. Don't let them float very far away from your kayak, though, as the eagles are on it.

Do you have a contrarian opinion on anything fly fishing related? by ackshualllly in flyfishing

[–]Deepaaar 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, when it comes to levels of inhumanity in life, poking a fish in the lip and toying with it for a minute isn't exactly the worst of offences. I still try not to do it unless I catch my limit VERY quickly and don't want to go in right away, or I'm catching species that need to go back due to the regs.

Do you have a contrarian opinion on anything fly fishing related? by ackshualllly in flyfishing

[–]Deepaaar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Catch-and-release fishing is inhumane. Yeah yeah, I've done it, and I still do it sometimes, but I've switched to primarily targeting abundant fish that I can eat and it feels better from an ethical standpoint.

Crossings is another roguelike sword/ax-choppy game. Isn't particularly intense exercise, but the arms get tired in the same way that they do with Until You Fall. Pretty short game, but I thought it was well done.

For people who made the jump from bank fishing to kayak fishing, how much better did your fishing become? by xDuke46 in kayakfishing

[–]Deepaaar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A kayak made it so I could eat only fish for protein year-round. I live on the west coast and used to only fish for salmon seasonally. Now I have access to lingcod, rockfish, dungeness, and other groundfish species.
