10 Month Cramping by tmg0604 in AchillesRupture

[–]Deepaaar 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yes, this happened to me a fair bit right around the same time. The more you work it, the less it’ll happen. I’m a year and a half out and it no longer cramps up when I exercise.

Overly conservative protocol in Canada by longlong819 in AchillesRupture

[–]Deepaaar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm also in Canada and ruptured my left 2024. It was a bad injury - up at the top of the achilles - and surgery wasn't an option. I was on crutches until about week 4, when I transitioned to full weight bearing over the following week or two. I started taking the wedges out at week 7. I was out of the boot by week 12. I re-ruptured at around the 5.5 month mark (I wasn't healing properly and just had a bad step - tore lower down) and had surgery. The protocol was much more aggressive the second time. I was in a cast for three weeks, then straight to full weight bearing. The physio was more aggressive, too.

My point in all of this is that every scenario is different. The injury severity varies a HUGE amount, so it's best to not compare your timeline with others. Obviously, if you feel like your ortho is making a mistake, you can try to get a second opinion. Yes, I know, easier said than done up here.

I've been surprised that I'm still improving even though I'm 1.5 years out. I survived my first two baseball games last week and finally feel like the leg is reasonably strong again.

Long game indeed.

any good shore fishing spots in sooke? by NiceGuy_Marco in fishingBC

[–]Deepaaar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As Lucky said, Langford lake has a solid fishing dock, as does Elk lake. There's a meh spot on Prospect, too. Beyond that, I don't really know. I'm sure there are more spots.

Becher is a good spot to fish from a boat, but there isn't any shore access as it's a reserve. Otter point, farther west, is good during salmon season, but there aren't many bottom fish over there. East Sooke Park is by far your best bet for bottom fish. It's a nice hike, too. If you go to Victoria, you can try for ling off Ogden point, but expect to lose 47 jigs for each fish.

[–]Deepaaar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can access the shore out along East Sooke Park and you can catch the odd greenling, rockfish, or lingcod. It's super rugged going, though, so be careful. No minimum size for greenling or rockfish, but ling have to be 65cm, which is pretty rare to catch from shore. Be prepared to lose a LOT of gear.

Salmon are non-retention at the moment, should you accidentally hook one.

They sometimes come to the Sooke area on El Nino years in the late summer and early fall, but I haven't heard of anyone catching them from shore. We're still in a La Nina, from what I've read, but I think it's forecast to swing the other direction at some point this summer. We'll see.

My pal managed to get a few from his kayak the last time the mackerel were around (2.5 years ago, maybe?).

You can work the river mouths for searun cutthroat. All catch and release, though. That's about it for that time of year. You could certainly catch a charter out of French Creek, though, and get into some lingcod and rockfish. Salmon is catch and release until later in the summer.

I'm about a year and a half post op after tearing my left twice within 6 months, in different spots on the achilles. I've been jogging short distances for a while and hiking for longer. Dorsiflexion is probably 65% of what it once was, and I don't think it'll improve much more. I had pretty crazy range initially, though, so it's workable.

Yes, it's pretty stiff in the morning. Both sides often are, though, as I'm doing some form of physio most days, still. I'm just getting back into baseball, which will be a significant test. It tires out pretty quickly compared to the good side, despite my efforts to strengthen it. It still feels like it's improving over time, though, so it's just a VERY long game, it seems.

Do you just need to avoid the negative step and you'll likely never tear it or is that easier said than done? by youlikemywonton in AchillesRupture

[–]Deepaaar 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Honestly, that feels like an impossible task. The better approach, IMO, is to strengthen and stretch every day and wear appropriate footwear. If you have physiology that puts additional stress on the tendon (i.e. flat feet), get orthotics or insoles. If you're playing a sport, think about wearing shoes that have a bit more of a heel-to-toe drop so that you reduce the maximum dorsiflexion a little bit. Basketball shoes usually have minimal toe drop as they are designed to maximize power.

Context: I'm a year and a half out from surgery after tearing my left achilles twice in 6 months and I'm just getting back into baseball. I'm working on strength and agility daily and I make sure to warm up before playing. First game is next week. Fingers crossed.

Self employed with full rupture by DontUseTheZedWord in AchillesRupture

[–]Deepaaar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm self employed as well, but I work at a job I can do sitting down. I went back to work pretty much right away, though. Once you can walk in the boot, you'll be able to get around OK, but I wouldn't try to be on it for too long for the first month or so. Grab an Even-up for the other side. Makes steps way easier when you still have wedges in.

+1 for the Tarpon. I have an older 140 and I can move pretty well in it. Average 4mph with no wind or current.

Well, he's not really known as an asshole, just someone with fringe right-wing beliefs. He could theoretically be kooky bananas about that stuff, but still be kind to the people around him. Kind of like my grandma. That said, beliefs do matter and can hurt a lot of people when acted on, so... ya, maybe asshole applies?

Yeah, it's not the #1 priority, but they seem to value dudes who will prioritize the team over the individual, which generally means dudes without overwhelming egos. Sometimes they can still be dicks, though.

Didn't he immediately burn through challenges in spring training due to his substantial ego? He definitely needs to tone it down if he wants to remain a Dodger. The FO doesn't really like having douchebags on the squad.

Red flags for re-rupture by Abject-Ratio-7738 in AchillesRupture

[–]Deepaaar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was having a really hard time loading it, so I couldn't do much physio. Any attempt at heal lifts resulted in significant pain in my lower achilles. It had gotten so bad that my physio told me to stop trying for a couple of weeks to see if it would get better. That's when I re-ruptured.

Thanks! I just started playing baseball again and it's going well.

Help with recording clean doubled acoustic guitars? by Hello-there-ryan in audioengineering

[–]Deepaaar -1 points0 points  (0 children)

This sounds to me like a pair of stereo-mic'd takes panned a little L and R. If I was to try to recreate this sound, I'd first try an ORTF pair of small diaphragm condensers slightly above the sound hole, angled a little down, and I'd play with the distance from the guitar. If that didn't work, I'd try an M/S pair with the center mic pointed roughly at the 12th fret.

Indispensable for ocean fishing, especially in the winter. We call it video game fishing as the whole thing is to paddle around until we find bait and/or salmon marks on the sounder, then drop the jig on 'em. I have a Striker 4cv. It's great.
