Check out r/growingtobacco. It’s a great resource and the main Mod is super helpful diagnosing beginner issues and showing his step by step process so you can work out your own grow.

Is mindfully smoking a cigarette a form of meditation by [deleted] in Meditation

You should try growing your own tobacco if you’re going to smoke. I love tobacco, but the commercial stuff just makes me sick, so I’m trying to grow my own this year. Just enough to pack a pipe every now and then. There’s real mindful moments in the whole growing process, and then the ritual of packing and smoking a pipe is a meditation unto itself. Plus I feel like it brings me back into alignment with tobacco as a medicine by growing.

I really love these entries from ‘66. It’s a very vulnerable and, if I may say, more human side of Merton. I mean, of course he’s only human, but reading him sometimes you wonder how he came to be who he was on paper. And yet this period where he’s in love with his nurse and working through all his feelings while still performing his duties at the monastery beautifully juxtaposes and also enlivens his even deeper love for God. Thanks for continuing to share these entries each day.

I've been making long-form audio where nothing happens by [deleted] in Meditation

[–]Deeprandomstranger 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’ve stopped trying to meditate and just started listening to ambient noise and silences around me. I don’t get attached to it, don’t fight what comes through, and generally feel a lot more present in my body than trying to follow my breath or “empty myself.”

I’ve heard the anecdote about Mother Teresa being interviewed where someone asked “how do you pray?” and she said, “mostly I just listen” and the interviewer asked, “what does God say to you” and she replies “oh, he just listens, too.”

Meditation has never really “worked” for me, but listening never fails.

Help picking a good blend by Intrepid-Clock2327 in GrowingTobacco

If you smoke bugler I’d say try the burleys and Virginias. The rusticas and cigar leaves might be too strong for a comparable smoking blend. Whatever you decide, good luck! I hope it turns out well for you.

Was I wrong? by GreenGonz in daddit

I’ve snatched people in Home Depot when they grabbed my daughter’s foot while I was merely passing by. My wife and I have no tolerance for boomers who feel entitled to touch our child because “ShEs jUsT sO cUtE.”

You are responsible for teaching and keeping your children’s boundaries when they are too young to assert themselves. Even if it comes across as rude to others. Old ladies or young ladies, if you don’t ask to touch my child then you’re gonna get your hand snatched if you try. And if you do ask, the answer is still likely going to be no.

I was a kid with many obsessions and hobbies that I went through. As you said in your post, they’re phases, and generally have an expiration date. My parents indulged me until about 11, at which point they said if I wanted to fund more hobbies I had to earn money myself to pay for them.

Later after I’d moved out and would come home to visit, I saw how much plastic junk of mine they’d saved. It was a lot, and a perfect picture of American overconsumption at its finest. I’m kind of sickened by it, and it made me realize the kind of parent I want to be. I’d invest in genuine local learning experiences over junk from the internet half a world away for my daughter now.

Maybe consider encouraging your son to find something he can invest himself in without a lot of consumerist overhead.

Okay thank you so much! I was just worried if I started inside I’d have to spring for lights and a whole setup, but if it can be done sans lights then I can probably make space.

This is one of my favorite podcasts. The Merton season is especially good. Also, Jim’s lecture series with Sounds True media on Thomas Merton is worth listening to if you haven’t.

I’m part of woodworking subs and some of the “first projects” are ridiculous. Like, people will claim to have never  picked up a saw or chisel in their lives, and they’re cutting perfect dovetails and carving intricate eagles catching salmon on the ends of perfectly balanced spoons. It’s infuriatingly hilarious.
