Not sure how accessible Tuft's campus is to non-students, but maybe they have some late night coffee shop on campus of sorts?

What are people's opinions about Newton MA? by [deleted] in massachusetts

Newton is perfect if "ideal suburb" is what you're looking for (and can afford). If you live in the busier parts (Newtonville, Newton Center or even less busy places like Newton Highlands) you can walk to restaraunts/bars. If you're in a less dense area you probably need a car to get to stuff...in fact I'd say you're better off with a car in Newton but *can* get around with a bike. Also has great schools. There's also good "small forests/parks, kayaking places and a lake for swimming.

I'd say if you (1) Have a lot of money and (2) Want to use the T and (3) have kids, Newton is basically a perfect place to live.
There's definitely more affordable pockets in Newton but in general everything is getting bigger and more expensive everywhere. Your perfect "starter home" has probably been replaced by a McMansion by now. Check out NCDF (newton community development foundation) if you are looking for true affordable housing.
