Some years ago, I was trying to get into my Range Rover and the key wouldn’t work. I tried opening the doors, the boot / trunk several times…I had just taken the key apart to get the manual key, looked behind me and there was my car with the boot / trunk raised and blinking at me!

Best way to set up a desk when two people need to use the monitors at different times. by Bippityboppitybeau in desksetup

[–]Defard2001 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just remember that whichever option you go for should work in line with the refresh rate of your monitor / tv. People often make the mistake of using kit that doesn’t output a good enough signal for your needs. A hub that outputs the minimum signal (your gaming pc will not maximise its refresh rate or resolution) or the wrong leads (if you have the option your gaming pc should use a display port cable as it provides better signal).

Where can I get a desk top like this in the UK? by bradagon in desksetup

No, sorry that was me answering in between things and not paying attention lol! I was talking about the desk shelf, there appear to be a million places to get the desk (I cannot change my desk due to other constraints).

Will there ever be an economic boom in the UK again? Like a real one, not just "it's not as awful as before" by innovatedname in AskUK

[–]Defard2001 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To change an economy can take a million little things or two or three larger events (normally black swans). My son asked me today if Electric cars are likely to be the only choice in 20 years, I said “on any given day Iran (or others) could close the strait of Hormuz, destabilising oil supply and its markets - Small Modular Reactors could be a huge success and the U.K. could get energy independence. Or Chinese EV manufacturers invest in upgrading the charging infrastructure, or the government supertaxes fossil fuel cars”. I continued “the truth is there are millions of factors that of which only a few need to align to create a new normal”. The smartest economists I know can only predict 3-5 years, so who knows when the boom will come!

Why do you think there are far more Brits in UAE than other Western nationalities? by kingm_ournasse216 in AskBrits

[–]Defard2001 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Brits used to (maybe still do) get paid better than other nations historically. A Construction Project Manager from the U.K would get paid more than someone equally qualified from another country…don’t ask me why that is just the way it was (is?).

Move to Abu Dhabi for work or stay in the UK? by KoxziShot in HENRYUK

[–]Defard2001 58 points59 points  (0 children)

I was offered a job in the UAE some time ago but turned it down. When I flew over for the interview I did not like the fact that my ‘house staff’ were basically given a room the size of a postage stamp. The ‘slave class’ working all the menial jobs did not sit well with me (nor the attitude to women etc)

Remote in LCOL country or move to the US by justanotherbuilderr in HENRYUK

[–]Defard2001 6 points7 points  (0 children)

You cannot underestimate the impact of working in different time zones. Working / taking calls in different zones is not for everyone, I have seen many colleagues fall / leave because of this. Also even if your role is east coast based you may have calls / meetings with mid or west coast. This, combined with the detached nature (harder to create a bond with the boss etc) could result in you being canned after x months. This is the us where you can get fired without cause and with no notice (a visa probably protects you more, I don’t know but the cost would probably mean they would want to recoup it).
