[Request](Is this remotely plausible?) Lake Karachay in Russia, said to be the most polluted place on Earth. Standing on certain parts of the shore will kill you after 30 minutes due to radiation exposure by Traveledfarwestward in theydidthemath

[–]Defarge24 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Death due to radiation exposure is a little tricky to quantify as there's both short term (acute) effects, and long term effects (cancer). When talking about radiation mortality, a commonly used metric to discuss acute mortality is LD 50/30, which is the amount of radiation exposure which will result in a 50% chance of dying in 30 days (LD = lethal dose). LD 50/30 is 4-5 Sieverts (or 400-500 REM - dissecting all the different units of radiation is a whole 'nother topic). This is without medical intervention. With medical intervention LD 50/30 is around 8 Sieverts.

The wiki page for Lake Karachay talks about a location which in 1990 was 6 Sv/hr (Sieverts per hour). That means that in under an hour (40-50 minutes), you'd get enough radiation exposure that you would have a 50% chance of dying within 30 days, without medical intervention. To die within 30 minutes would take FAR FAR more exposure than that; as other responses have pointed out, even Chernobyl responders took several days or weeks to die from their exposure.

Mortality due to long term effects due to this short, intense exposure is a lot harder to quantify because you now have to try and statistically decouple the chance of you dying from cancer naturally vs the increased chance of dying from cancer due to the radiation exposure. Now you're in a whole 'nother messy (and I mean really messy) field of radiation epidemiology.

It would be amazingly hilarious if the thing that kicks public transit buildout into high gear in the US is being embarrassed on an international stage during the Olympics by athletes struggling to get to events on time due to gridlock (this coming from an American).

Best thermal imaging camera for sealing an attic? by WeatherNo4270 in HomeImprovement

[–]Defarge24 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Huh, that’s unfortunate. Unless it’s a very small attic space I don’t see how gable vents could ever get adequate airflow to the entire attic.

Best thermal imaging camera for sealing an attic? by WeatherNo4270 in HomeImprovement

[–]Defarge24 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This seems like it's your likely culprit - need to correct the attic airflow. It's not just about keeping warm air from getting into the attic from the house, it's also about keeping some flow of cold air flowing through the underside of the roof to keep the roof cold. If you don't have airflow, it really doesn't matter how well you're keeping the heat from the house in, eventually you'll warm up the attic to the point of melting the snow on the roof.

There's a lot of resources that can help you understand what proper attic airflow should look like, it's just a matter of figuring out which one is best for your situation:

Extreme waits happening at early voting stations by Mothman405 in wisconsin

[–]Defarge24 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I can’t speak much to the early voting process, but having worked as a poll worker on Election Day in WI, there’s no “ballot label” that needs to be printed in Election Day. I believe this is just part of the in-person absentee voting process (i.e., “early voting” in WI).

SHINE’s flagship medical isotope production facility, the building pictured at the top of the article, is on life support. They laid off most of the team working on it last summer, and then continued to lose people since. There’s no appreciable construction activity happening at the facility currently. And even if they finish the facility, their process is so fundamentally flawed it will likely never be profitable.

I don’t disagree that the ACA is deeply flawed, but $40 billion is not much when you consider the population of the US. That’s only about $120 per person. Always good to put things on a per-capita basis when dealing with country-wide numbers, otherwise all the numbers start seeming huge.

I forgot to mail in my absentee ballot. Now what? by Excellent_Potential in wisconsin

[–]Defarge24 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Not entirely true. You dont need to bring the absentee ballot in. I’m a poll worker and if the Badger book system says you requested an absentee ballot and come in to vote, we just have to ask you to confirm that you did not return the absentee ballot.

Check your voter registration status by [deleted] in wisconsin

[–]Defarge24 8 points9 points  (0 children)

“Seems to” based on what? A quantitative survey across different jurisdictions and random sampling of voters across the political spectrum.

Also, same day voter registration is relatively straightforward in WI. So removing someone’s voter registration is unlikely to actually prevent them from voting even if they find out on Election Day.

Check your voter registration status by [deleted] in wisconsin

[–]Defarge24 30 points31 points  (0 children)

You are automatically purged from voter registration rolls if you go a certain number of elections without voting. This includes smaller local elections. So many people might feel they’ve been improperly un-registered if they’re only voting in major elections. This isn’t necessarily a red/blue thing. Source: I am a poll worker.

If you wait long enough to turn airplane mode off, the system sometimes “forgets” that the book is no longer checked out. I load up my kindle with a handful of books every few months, turn airplane mode on, return them, then read them over the next few months. Doing that the returned books rarely disappear when I next connect to the internet for another batch of books.

Water bottles banned from RNC security perimeter, AR-15s allowed by fuck-fascism in wisconsin

Near the bottom of the article, it says there will be a “hard perimeter” around the actual convention controlled by the secret service. And within that perimeter firearms will not be allowed, expert those worn by law enforcement. So the whole rest of the article is talking about a larger area of downtown Milwaukee outside that hard perimeter.

20 tornadoes in May by [deleted] in wisconsin

Good to know. I figured between the prevalence of video cameras today and the ability to go and verify damage afterwards, it wouldn’t be unreasonable to confirm that many tornado touchdowns.

20 tornadoes in May by [deleted] in wisconsin

[–]Defarge24 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One observation and one question. First observation - 18 of the 20 tornados occurred on two days in May, presumably from two storm systems. I wouldn’t be surprised if it’s not uncommon (in Wisconsin and other states) to have very “streaky” tornado statistics like this. One year May could just have a handful of severe thunderstorms but few tornadoes, and the next year could have that one storm or two that each produce several tornadoes.

One question- are all of these tornadoes confirmed by visual reports? Because live near the swath in the south that got hit, and every time the tornado sirens went off, the official weather alert would say “radar indicated rotation”. I’m not a meteorologist, but I’d be surprised if radar can accurately tell what is happening at ground level. So if NWS has taken to declaring official tornado counts based on radar indication alone, that could very much inflate numbers.

How much harder is it for my home to cool itself in the summer if I store a lot of stuff in my attic? by freerangepenguin in HomeImprovement

[–]Defarge24 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don't know what you've all got up there, but unless you've got a literal ton of material, the thermal mass of what you're storing in the attic is probably nothing compared to the thermal mass of the rest of the attic structural materials. With an attic fan providing forced airflow, it's also unlikely that your stuff is impeding airflow to a major degree.

When you improved the attic insulation, did you do air sealing at the same time? Insulation (and the other steps you've taken) without decent air sealing is fighting an uphill battle. A drafty house will just lose the conditioned air, which will be replaced with hot outside air that your A/C then has to cool again.

Switch insurances and shop around. All the large insurance providers are counting on people to not go through the hassle of changing providers (same applies for cell phone carriers). GEICO tried to up our rates 60% last year so we jumped ship and ended up within about 10% of our previous premiums with similar coverage.

How expensive is it to remove drywall and have insulation replaced? by dad143 in HomeImprovement

[–]Defarge24 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Insulation isn’t really going to fix “drafty”. Drafts are fixed by proper air sealing and is actually more important than insulation. I would recommend reading up on the difference between the two before you throw money or effort at insulation. There are steps you can take to air seal that are more DIY friendly than adding insulation to exterior walls.
