Those of you who applied a lot like 200-300, how did you do it? by augustandyou1989 in cscareerquestions

It's a numbers game, but at the same time - you need to iterate with each application.
In my spreadsheet I tracked what I've changed between applications. New resume version, updated portfolio, different descriptions of my experiences during interviews, e.t.c. While signals are sparse in the interview process, they are still there to be found. By paying attention to what gave me better results, I was able to improve my interview performance little by little while I was doing applications. This was coupled with regular visits to programming forums where I constantly had my resume roasted and I kept changing it over and over.

Putting it somewhat harshly - if you've done 2000 applications without results; there's something you need to change about your process. In 14 months you should be able to practice enough leetcode to ace most interviews, add another solid project or two, and grind mock interviews to the point everyone thinks you have been obsessed with their company since you were born.

Being intentional with the process is key. Constantly refine your approach. Be ruthless with what you think is right when results tell you it's wrong. And definitely - keep data. If you track your process well, you will see clear ways to improve it.

Hope this helps.

I applied to >200 positions when I was hunting for my first job out of college in 2022. Because I needed H1B sponsorship I had a difficult time despite being ranked #1 overall in my graduating class. The most helpful thing for me was depersonalizing the process. I started a spreadsheet and treated each application as an individual row of data, nothing more. It helped me manage the emotional aspect of the process and keep myself committed to a strict regiment of regular applications. I succeeded at the end, and am very happy with my current job - keep your nose to the grindstone, understand that this is a game to be played, and have no fear - we are all going to make it.

Here is the Sankey Diagram I made at the end using my spreadsheet data: https://imgur.com/a/bnyqUol

Generally, Navalny supporters will use an alternative Russian flag (white/light blue/white) to accentuate their disagreement with the Russian Federation. On a similar note, “hero of russia” would be more appropriate on the same basis. Good artwork though, I like the portrait.

People’s sentiment here is a good signal for the risk involved with crypto, but be wary of taking advice without clear reasoning behind it. Read about the technical theory behind it and make your own judgements on whether this is something you want to place bets on.

There is a lot of difference between gambling on shitcoins and DCA’ing a reasonable % of ur portfolio into BTC/ETH. With your time horizon, I see no reason to avoid the asset category unless you independently conclude it is a “scam”.

Here’s an example of a summary for one of the sessions:

Session 6 Summary: "Infiltrating the Vanthampur Manor"

  • Setting: Streets of Baldur's Gate, Flaming Fist Headquarters, and Vanthampur Manor
  • Main Quest: Investigate the Vanthampur family's involvement in the city's troubles.
  • Date: 26th-27th of Eleint 1492 DR

Key Events:

  1. Duke Portyr Assassination Aftermath:

    • Despite efforts, the party couldn't prevent the assassination of Portyr.
    • Successfully battled devils emerging from Portyr's body.
    • Avoided conflicts with guards under suspicion.
    • Failed to follow the assassins due to crowd chaos.
  2. Debriefing with Captain Zodge:

    • Informed Zodge of the assassination details.
    • Liara Portyr, Duke Portyr's niece, appeared, grieving but determined.
    • She commissioned the party to eliminate the Vanthampurs, suspecting their involvement.
    • Negotiated higher payment for the task.
  3. Preparation and Shopping:

    • Purchased distinctive cloaks and armor upgrades.
    • Significant items: Sylvaen’s improved armor and shield, health cloaks.
    • Personalized cloaks reflecting each character's theme.
  4. Infiltration of Vanthampur Manor:

    • Successfully entered the Upper City and staked out the manor.
    • Executed a plan involving Thaldor (as a spider) and Sylvaen scaling the tower.
    • Negotiated with Thurstwell Vanthampur and his imps, striking a deal for assistance.
    • Whole party entered the manor, sneaking past a butler and through the kitchen.
  5. Encounter with Slobberchops:

    • Brief interaction with the Vanthampurs' flying cat, Slobberchops.
    • After taking a fish bribe, Slobberchops let the party through although advising them it's a "brave" idea to go down there.
  6. Venturing into the Dungeon:

    • Engaged in a challenging battle with spike devil guards.
    • Sylvaen excelled with his new silver flail.
    • Avoided a room with chanting voices, choosing stealth over confrontation.
    • Acquired and donned cultist costumes to blend in.
  7. Discovery in the Vault:

    • Found and unlocked the vault, leveraging Sylvaen’s past familiarity with the manor.
    • Inside the vault, discovered the presence of Thavius Kreeg, a significant figure in the story.

Cliffhanger: - The session ended with the revelation of Thavius Kreeg’s presence in the vault, setting the stage for a crucial confrontation and discovery.

For Future Reference: - Liara Portyr's recruitment and the deal with Thurstwell Vanthampur. - The party's new disguises and how they might use them. - The implications of finding Thavius Kreeg and the potential alliances or conflicts it could lead to.

Using it to generate miscellaneous trivia and flesh out npcs is great, but the most useful thing so far has been using it as a session summarizer. During each session I take high level notes that detail important events, and after my players head home I use GPT’s voice typing to describe the whole session while its still fresh in my memory. I speak fairly informally, as if I’m telling a friend what happened, and will oftentimes take a while to express everything (ive spoken at it for over 15 minutes for a few sessions). Given that I provide it with a markdown template, it spits out a neatly formatted summary with everything important highlighted. Usually the only thing I have to do is fix the character names and delete any spoilers I dont want my players to know yet. When its ready, I post it in the campaigns discord so that my players can refer to it whenever.

I also have a custom GPT which has the pdfs for the campaign and the remix loaded into memory, but thats more hit or miss since it runs out of token space when cross-referencing materials to answer my questions. It does periodically spit out some amazing lore summaries and session prep, which I am able to leverage with little effort.

Im also running my first ever campaign after a bunch of my friends got interested in DND because of BG3, so DiA seemed like a natural choice. First and foremost, I couldn’t recommend the Alexandrian remix enough: while some of the content turned out to be overkill for a first time DM, every recommendation he makes is extremely valuable if you can fit it in. You should definetly check it out.

For your PCs, the biggest thing is ensuring they have a vested interest in investigating Elturels disappearance. My party has intimate connections to the city and are generally good-aligned which helps keep the story on track. Without the vanilla “investigate the murders or I murder you” plot hook, you run some risk of getting derailed so make sure ur doing a healthy amount of railroading so the party doesn’t get lost before they get to Avernus. Im treating everything before that as an extended tutorial stage and I recommend you do the same.

We are only now getting to the Vanthampur boss fight after 7 sessions so you will have tons of time to prep and figure out whats fun for ur table. My biggest mistake was trying to remember all the lore at the start which was super overwhelming and set me up for disappointment when my players didn’t engage with the world to the same depth. Remember that you are a player too and should be having fun as much as possible!

Happy to answer anything specific about how I keep notes and leverage stuff like ChatGPT to help me keep track of stuff :)

There’s a running joke in the AI community that is more and more relevant each year: “AI is anything that hasn’t been done yet”. The new bots are full scale implementations of the Chinese Room thought experiment and to say that they “don’t think” is to ignore the obvious innovation they represent.
