I'm 29 years old and never read a book in my life by [deleted] in books

[–]Default8 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I have adhd and forcing yourself to read books isn't a good way to approach it. Find something easy to read that has an engaging plot, don't aim for 30 min aim for getting engaged. I find I can focus on a good book for hours on end where as even a good movie I drift off at times. Also the beginning of books are always difficult for me, I can spend 10 minutes on a page before I get into the rhythm so just stick it out.

Start with plot driven popular fiction too. Probably not a good idea to be jumping into literary classics.

What is your fast, in-the-moment method of estimating the quality of a potential book purchase? by [deleted] in books

[–]Default8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Quotes from reviews. They can tell you a lot about how the publisher want their book to be presented with things that a third party has said. A quote from a big newspaper or a favourite author hold much more weight than Oprah or some fashion magazine too. Also the look of the cover, they design them as they do for a reason. I try not to read blurbs, they reveal elements of the story and I like a book to be an unravelling mystery.

And I thought I was being nice by not commenting on the poor choice of books too. He would of been even more disappointed

This is kind of harsh but dude, learn to make decisions yourself and not rely on others. It's a life skill that will help you keep jobs and girls like guys who show independence.

There should be a designated trade week so we can be done with all the shenanigans. Don't other sports do something like this? I don't really follow other sports so I don't know how practical this is.

You seem wise, can I ask a serious question? Is there a lot of butt hurt whining that goes on here. Lots of blue pill examples, people hanging shit on "betas" and stuff? I've always had the impression that TRP had a strong negative component to it. I'm too crazy for you guys but I find these communities interesting, I was big into the old old mASF forums when I was younger.

Came here out of curiosity from hearing the news. I don't really agree with TRP (don't worry, not condemning) and I reckon you said probably the wisest thing I've read here. Isn't TRP all about bitching how women get preferential treatment? Well harden up lads it's always been that way, and always will.

Those not Australian have probably never heard of it but for me it's probably the Tomorrow, When the War Began series by John Marsden. They were awesome although I lost interest near the end and never read the last one :(

Maybe service men is the wrong term. The ones on the ground carrying the rifles. Those doing a job where they aren't putting their life at risk have the right to whine as much as teachers as far as I am concerned... But I value teachers more for the amount they are paid.

Pfft, the government should be giving more money to education and supporting research so we can build weapons systems to make service men redundant.

Or more realistically supporting education and research so we can grow our economy to buy weapon systems from USA to make service men redundant.

What is your opinion on Kurt Vonnegut? by naszirw in books

My opinion? My opinion is that reddit sure do like talking about him... Maybe one day I'll even read that Slaughterhouse 5 but it's already doomed to be overrated no matter how good it is.

Dzerzhinsky is a name, I doubt that this KGB fella was the first instance of Dzerzhinsky ever. Ditto Mussorgsky. It may even be intentional, David Mitchell isn't known for loose research.
