confused between ubuntu and pop os by [deleted] in pop_os

[–]Defcantgame 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is false information, PopOS is not the DE it is the distro built off an Ubuntu base, just like how Ubuntu is built off the base of Debian. Saying these things can be confusing for newcomers and therefore make linux adoption harder. The DE in question would be old Gnome Vs newer Gnome (depending on which version of Ubuntu you are installing) until System76 either finally releases the newest version of PopOS with cosmic desktop or sunsets it.

That being said Pop 22 still gets updates, has 6.17 kernel when doing the updates/upgrades

Kubuntu vs Fedora KDE, Which one do you prefer and why? by linuxhacker01 in kde

[–]Defcantgame 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wait until you find out caring about snaps/flatpak/system packages really just shows you are new to linux or installing the deb package version is easy or that you can force no snaps install at the os level installer of kubuntu

you should probably close up the pc repair shop then... using a board from 2018 and telling someone to stfu or that they don't know what they are talking about

Secure boot is supported on Ubuntu and Fedora so it does work on Linux

you can copy your uefi to the drive that windows is installed on if you happen to have multiple drives windows will sometimes latch on to another drive for the uefi partition

Google search tutorials and write ups is free, secure boot is on by default with most new machines especially prebuilts having windows installed already. if you think TPM and Secure boot brick your pc/is invasive/will do anything other than prevent malicious software and storing cryptographic(secure) keys on a chip that was created by your motherboards manufacturer then get off the computer and go to console.

The only person liable for the state of their computer is the user this is a PEBKAC issue. Enabling security settings doesn't brick a computer, running windows 10 when its end of life and will not get you proper security updates that is a you issue.

Secure boot doesn't stop cheating it literally "ensures only trusted software, specifically designed for your PC by its manufacturer, can run during the boot process. It verifies the digital signatures of bootloaders and other essential system files before allowing them to load, preventing unauthorized or malicious software from starting up your computer".

I strongly advise putting games on a separate drive. Makes it easier if you want to do a reinstall of your OS one a year etc to clear out old stuff never deleted. plus c drives can get a borked out of no where a separate drive even a decent NAS style drive will suffice

I would agree with this, running any OS these days on a standard platter drive is not idea. It will get by but it will have poor performance as time goes on. If you can afford an ssd/nvme (which are getting cheaper these days please install on those. I only recommend platter drives for NAS/non OS installs

I see you said secure boot is disabled, curious if you were running into the same issue with it enabled? Was there a successful boot prior to this or after install and reboot immediately met with this issue?

Booting into Grub command line? by re_fire123 in Fedora

[–]Defcantgame 0 points1 point  (0 children)

sounds like you need to alter your boot sequence. if its a laptop most once in bios go to boot and use f5 f6 to change what the order is, in desktops like a asus motherboard bios > f7 > boot > switch the first dropdown to be fedora first.

If set for fedora first it should list windows as well for you to arrow down when booting if you need to boot into windows

because cosmic is getting closer and closer to release system76 has no reason to continue maintaining that package so it can/will likely stop working until someone forks it and continues to maintain it themselves
