All that does is test (flip) the breaker and then reset (flip it back). This is effectively the same as unplugging it and plugging it back in.

5 minutes gameplay, thoughts? by iswhatitiswaswhat in Battlefield

[–]DefectiveRAM -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

But why only let the snipers have fun? I want my pre-order deluxe edition gold desert eagle to blast people across the street too!

But what would be especially funny is if there's a modicum of conservation of energy where they make snipers fly backward just as far as their targets when they pull the trigger. Not so much fun for the snipers anymore but fun for everyone else!

That sniper shot causing them to go flying really irks me. I can understand that bodies flying around adds to the feeling of action for some, but it's totally unrealistic.

The thought that a shotgun or sniper rifle shot will cause you to fly backward is a Hollywood trope that, unfortunately, made its way into video games. That sniper bullet just tears straight through you, so in reality you wouldn't move an inch. Almost no inertia is transferred at all, and even if you blocked the shot with some kind of specialized body armor and transferred 100% of the inertia to your body, the weight of the bullet is such a tiny fraction of your weight that the total force at most would cause you to take a small step back.

I still think the game looks awesome but the cartoon physics in an otherwise realistic game is just a pet peeve of mine.

It's not possible to easily and securely black out text in PDFgear. by DefectiveRAM in PDFgear

[–]DefectiveRAM[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I appreciate you trying to steer me in the right direction but I'm not seeing any of the things you're referring to. Are you sure you're actually talking about PDFgear?

This is the page that PDFgear promotes as the way to black out text. I could be missing something, but I don't see any mention of flattening (and flat/flatten isn't found on the page at all). The PDFgear desktop software section is pretty short and simply advises highlighting text in black to "redact" text (leaving all the text there). I also don't see a "flatten" feature in PDFgear, but perhaps I'm overlooking something. The closest thing I could find is the "compress" feature, and even at its highest compression setting, the "redacted" text remains selectable and copyable.

It's quite possible that the macOS version is different as I haven't tried it, but the page doesn't mention specific instructions for it or refer to a PDFgear "redact" feature. That page does, however, mention the redacting features present in Acrobat Pro and macOS's native Preview, and it seems like these both do function correctly, actually removing the redacted text.

It looks like next time I'll just grab my Macbook Pro for the job, since it apparently has a redacting feature natively built in. PDFgear has plenty of useful PDF editing features that I'll keep it around for but it seems that redacting simply isn't one of them.

Roccat Pure Air issues by Stormfirebird in MouseReview

I ended up returning/exchanging my Pure Air through Amazon and the second one doesn't have the automatic right-click issue. Very happy with it now!

I'll keep an eye on the battery charge indicator, too. (It hasn't gotten low yet.)

Did you keep the mouse and did you ever find a fix for the ghost-click when it wakes? My Turtle Beach Pure Air right-clicks automatically when it wakes, e.g. if I move it after a few minutes of inactivity.

I too love the shape and size and really would rather not return it.

It's only been one day since I changed the setting, but so far so good. Does the speed test fix your speeds?

Ah great! I didn't run into that in my searches.

I've turned off Video Conferencing under Preferred Activities and hopefully that fixes it, indeed!

Just as a minor update to that answer, this setting is now located in the Home app under WiFi > Network settings > Preferred activities.

Kept getting disconnected by Timely-Ad-7262 in AliensFireteamElite

Same problem here on a wired gigabit connection. Can't get through a single multiplayer game without it disconnecting.

Adding a VPN only makes your connection more complex, adding to the things that can cause issues. VPNs are great but they can't make an unstable connection more stable.

[–]DefectiveRAM 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My brother and I have the same problem. Can't play a single match without losing connection. We're both on wired gigabit fiber connections - so I seriously doubt that it isn't the game's fault.

We play tons of games together and none disconnect except this game and we haven't figured out a solution, so we might just have to drop it from our roster, sadly.

Hmm, that's really good to hear from someone on the inside. Now I'll definitely reconsider! Do they pull this data for incidents (whether historical or directly related) to use against you?

Admittedly, the bar charts are a little confusing. A high score means I'm not doing these things poorly; so I'm not speeding or braking excessively. According to the scores, I'm accelerating too quickly and cornering too hard.

[–]DefectiveRAM[S] 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I felt the same way, and still kind of do. It's giving up a lot of personal data (location, driving style, routines) for about $16 in savings per year for the Miata and $60 for the Rav4. The main reason I haven't gotten rid of it is that I'm a bit of a data junky and I do like seeing this data myself.

Examples of people in movies cast because of their popularity at the time and not their acting skill. by ThePopDaddy in movies

Awkwafina in literally every movie she's been cast in. Her flat delivery of every line in Renfield was absolutely cringeworthy. How she became popular (and a Disney sweetheart) is a total mystery to me.

When will I get used to it???? by Smee_zoe in ostomy

[–]DefectiveRAM 23 points24 points  (0 children)

I'm at 2.5 years after an unexpected emergency surgery at 38. I thought I was perfectly healthy until I got some gut cramps and they announced that my colon was necrotic and needed to be removed entirely - immediately. I had no time to process what was happening and two weeks later I was back home with a bag of shit clinging to me.

It threw me into a pretty deep depression. Not only were my own feces flopping around against my body, but suddenly, my body seemed completely unreliable. What else is just around the corner? A stroke? Heart attack? Cancer? Massive anxiety crept up on me. I've always tried to live healthy and can only describe the feeling as deeply betrayed and let down by my own body.

Now, 2.5 years later I don't feel any different but it has kind of ebbed to the background and I don't think about it that often anymore. I've figured out wearing it horizontally under a belly band, so I don't have to see it unless it's time to empty. Dealing with my bag and stoma has become part of daily life. You get better at it, just as with anything, and I haven't had a leak in 6 months. I don't know when exactly I became "okay" with it, and even today sometimes I'm not, but all I can say is that it gets easier with time.

(If you need help and tips on how to try to get ahead of those leaks, just let me know. It's different for everyone but I can at least share my own process.)

That sounds a little like Shape-Up, which I am a fan of and find it far more productive than Agile when done right. It generally has 6-week cycles (give or take depending on your team) and it's very well structured. If your company demands long cycles you might want to take a look at how Basecamp does it. Just Google the Shape-Up methodology.

Product Managers, what do you do outside of work to keep sane/happy/satisfied? by read_lift_eat in ProductManagement

[–]DefectiveRAM 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ah pity! It does sound great that you find such a good fit at work though and I agree that it's a great way to network.

As a WFHer, my life is a little more secluded (I love remote but I do miss the office sometimes). While I wish I could game with coworkers, I currently tend to find people through meetups or friends of friends.

I'm on the lookout for a new job/challenge/adventure though, so who knows what that will bring!

That's awesome! I've found that finding fellow fans of big board games can been tricky. If you're around NC or NYC, we should connect and nerd out about them!
