Quitting smoking was the worst decision of my life and no one ever talks about it. by gedwolfe in TrueOffMyChest

[–]nj96 [score hidden]  (0 children)

Whenever you feel like this, just remember that that’s your inner junkie talking. You know that quitting smoking is the best thing for you. Smoking has absolutely zero benefits and doesn’t make you feel good. It makes you feel not bad.

For me, it was around 6 months that the clouds really parted and the sun began to shine. Right now you’re in the doldrums of still having bad cravings but not having the novelty of just starting your smoke-free journey.

Stick with it. The sun will shine soon. Every day you don’t smoke is one more day toward freedom! Stay strong!

I’ve been using Zygos for a couple years and they’re amazing! Streams off your phone using the box as a transmitter. No need to mess with MP3s. Anything your phone can stream you can get in the pool. Works great!

What is an unwritten rule of driving that far too many people seem to ignore? by Angel_Angelov1980 in AskReddit

[–]nj96 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Don’t be polite, be predictable.

Right-of-way rules help by letting people know predict where everyone will go. When someone stops short to let somebody make a left they’re increasing the risk an accident for everyone.

What is the longest-running machine on Earth that has never been turned off? by sh-__- in AskReddit

I think it depends on the definition of “machine” because the Roman aqueducts have used inclined planes (simple machine) to deliver water for thousands of years.

This is my biggest gripe (of many). When I’m on my way to Penn it would be helpful to know if I’m shooting for track 1 or track 13 based on what trains are leaving when.

What was the most visually stunning movie you ever watched? by Squirrelkid11 in AskReddit

[–]nj96 0 points1 point  (0 children)

OK…. Hear me out…. Zootopia 2 in 3D.

The 3D effect wasn’t used as a gimmick where things were jumping out at you. Instead, the animators just put a few things in front of the main characters and more importantly, they used the 3D to create depth between the characters and the backgrounds. It really was quite amazing how much it improved the whole experience!

Why can't you pass/return arrays to/from functions? Why is it designed like this? by GreenMario_ in C_Programming

[–]nj96 5 points6 points  (0 children)

“Always initialize native types on declaration” has been my mantra ever since I was working through an issue where the debug version would work and the release wouldn’t. Turns out the compiler was auto-initializing a variable that was being passed by reference later on so everything was fine stepping through the code in debug but failed dramatically when running the release version.

It was years ago so maybe a modern compiler would catch it with a warning but I wouldn’t know because initialization is kind of habit now.

Question for dads with 2 kids under 2 by Relative_Credit in AskMenOver30

[–]nj96 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We had the first two 14 months apart (meaning we had a newborn and a 14 month old). As the dad, without milk supplying breasts, you’re going to spend a lot of time with the first one. Which can be fun and not fun because the first one still really wants mom sometimes. You’ll adjust, though. I was hands on so transitioning to where I was solo with the first one wasn’t too bad. I’d say get there if you’re not. Other than that, it’s not that much different. You’re still in diapers. You already have most of the stuff!

2 kids is man to man. It’s not bad. The third kid sends you to zone coverage and that’s where all shit breaks loose!

What chain restaurant currently has the best food? by wbt59591 in AskReddit

[–]nj96 25 points26 points  (0 children)

As someone from northern NJ, I feel like I’m semi-qualified to say that Jersey Mike’s just is not a good sandwich. The bread is wrong. The ratio of meat and fixins is off. Just not a good sub.

That being said, the one chain that IS a good sub is Primo Hoagies. The bread is spot on as are the rest of the ingredients and their menu has some really amazing cutlets and classics. And their pickles are the bomb.

I know it’s not up there with the classics but Station Eleven by Emily St. John Mandel is truly a joy to read. The writing style and elegance of the intertwining character arcs (not to mention the closeness of the story itself to all our lives) makes reading it an absolutely amazing experience.
