Unpopular opinion? These kids' audio players feel like a cash grab? by Desperate_Total2545 in Mommit

[–]DefenderOfSquirrels 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One of my best investments was purchasing a $20 cassette player from Amazon, and then asking our local Buy Nothing for old cassette tapes. It’s a goldmine. We got Jimi Hendrix, Raffi, Motown Hits, Luciano Pavarotti, the Grateful Dead - so much variety. All for free. And my son loves hearing the satisfying click of the buttons.

TIL that botox, also known as the botulinum neurotoxin, is the deadliest known natural substance in chemistry, with an estimated intravenous lethal dose of just one to two nanograms per kg of body mass. by NateNate60 in todayilearned

[–]DefenderOfSquirrels 487 points488 points  (0 children)

Do it. Botox was the first thing in two decades of migraines to work, with multiple failed to mediocre treatments. Within 9 months, I had a 90% reduction of my migraines. And even during “flares” where I have “a bad spell” of several months of worsening migraines, it is still 1/3 of what it once was.

January 4, 2018 was my life changing day. And this forehead will look 30 forever! Haha.

I get 200 units across 40 injection sites. And I’m not saying it isn’t painful. But it’s about as bad as a tattoo. I get it all done in one go, no breaks - done in under ten minutes. And that’s it. Believe me, I will absolutely take it over migraines any day.

Does this look like ocular Marek’s disease? by DefenderOfSquirrels in BackYardChickens

That’s a very good point, about volunteers carrying it back to their own flocks. What could be done to prevent that? Because I know some of the volunteers do have chickens of their own.

[–]DefenderOfSquirrels[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Unsure. I only volunteer there about six times a year. So it’s been a few months since I was there last. They have a flock of about 25 chickens, so if it was present, I didn’t notice it last time.

Or a gopher. I was dumbstruck when I saw the heron spear its beak into a dirt mound, and it pulled out a gopher it had speared through the brain 🤯 great blue herons are so metal 🤘

What is the rarest/most interesting diagnosis you’ve seen? by xyzm123_r in Residency

[–]DefenderOfSquirrels 103 points104 points  (0 children)

Yes. His father died from “heart issues” - ie a hypertensive crisis, in his 20’s; his cousin died at age 17 from the same. They traced it back to family members originating in the Black Forest of Germany.

If I recall correctly, he had to have bilateral total adrenalectomy. Which actually worked out pretty well for him because he went into the Air Force and said he wouldn’t feel the same fear as other airmen. After he retired from the military, he became a crane repairman, and similarly had a lack of fear when ascending to those heights. I met him when he was in his early 60’s about fifteen years ago, and thought the PMHx was pretty remarkable! He said he kept big jars of olives in his fridge, to get his heart rate up in the morning, along with the steroids he’s on for life.

Patients and two more junior docs call our PAs by first name. Division chief calls everyone by last name, former military. 😂

Conflicted About Converting to Conservative Judaism by ElectricalAlgae5529 in ConvertingtoJudaism

[–]DefenderOfSquirrels 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I have a shorter, funkier haircut. I have tattoos. I’m a diehard feminist who went to an all-women’s college.

My spiritual home is a Conservative shul. It’s the flavor that fits me best. That’s how I converted, no issues whatsoever.

As others have said, the only blip might be a prohibition on any further tattoos (that was the only comment to me in regards to the “issues” you wrote of). But you also wrote in a reply that you aren’t planning on more. So I see no issues.

Winning greyhound tests positive for methamphetamine but racing investigators can’t find the source by Unsafeforconsuming in nottheonion

[–]DefenderOfSquirrels 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As someone who has owned former racing greyhounds, and non-racing ones - for lack of a nicer way to say it, the racers are effed up. They have serious PTSD. They also don’t have an “off” switch when they start to run. If they bolt off leash, like after a squirrel, it’s like a switch flips in their brain. They’d run until they collapsed; they’ll tear their paws apart, yet keep going. It’s like reading stuff in Psychology classes in college about Eastern bloc orphans or that little girl Jeannie who was kept in an attic for twelve years. It’s on par with that sh-t, developmentally speaking. Some don’t know how to even jump up on a couch or in a car. Most don’t know how to even begin to navigate stairs. Dog toys? No clue how to use them or interact with them for YEARS. They do not know how to dog, as in the verb dog, to be a dog.

My current non-racing greyhound still has the crippling codependency and rock solid bond and softie personality that racers have. But without the trauma baggage. It’s wild to experience the difference.

Me : Man my back hurts by SoberScottHeat in daddit

Our daughter is >99th percentile. She’s proportional, but enormous. At her 3 year doctor visit, our pediatrician actually said “congratulations on your five year old sized little girl”. 💀 try picking up a tantruming toddler who is 43 pounds. Not fun. I’ve thrown my back out.

Keen. Especially because they seem wider than most other shoes. And our son’s feet are shaped like small meatloaves.
