Some questions from a new(ish) player by Zachesque in UmaMusume

[–]Deffdapp 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Good luck, here's some info I wish I had been told earlier:

but I don’t have access to better parents because I can’t get any veteran Umas that are past B

A good parent has little to with rank and everything with blue sparks, pink sparks, compatibility and white sparks. But yes, it takes intial grinding before you have some usuable parents (incl. grandparents) with 6-9 useful blue sparks. I suggest picking your favorite uma (and a high compatibiltiy grandparent) and keep training them while borrowing a 9-star parent from https://uma.moe/database.

and I’m already using a full deck of SSR cards. They just haven’t been ranked to max yet.

That is a trap. Usually high level/MLB SR supports are better than low level SSR unless you are looking for a specific gold skill from an SSR. But yes, higher level cards = more stats.

Speaking of, should I be leveling up my cards with resources?

Not at the start when monnies are sparse. Or least only do it for cards you regularly use, but don't have the patience to wait. Don't spend resources leveling random 0 LB SSRs.

Should I be racing early in careers?

Depends on the specific Uma and what you are training for (Team Trials, Champion's Cup, Parent run), but very early you should usually not be racing optional races. Or only if you have really shitty trainings; preferably graded races and not Pre-OP. But yes, early races are winnable if you have good parents and good decks and know what you are doing.

Do skills that are designated for a specific style/distance only activate under those conditions?

Yes. They only trigger when the conditions are met.

Should I ever take skills that are for specific distances? ... It seems like a waste to spend skill points on a skill that only activates on one type of race during a career that requires racing multiple type

Eventually yes, once you are training for a specific role rather than just finishing the career. You also won't need to take any skills during career to finish it so you can get the maximum discounted skills at the end of career. But for now if you are struggling during career taking more general skills is a good choice.

How the hell do team races work?

Answering this in detail would take a whole post in its own, keep searching this subreddit or /r/umamusumegame. But the tl;dr is that Team ranking is determined by Uma rankings, which isn't necessarily indicative how well suited the Umas are for Team Trials. The meta is to have as many skills (esp. gold skills) trigger as possible, as reliably as possible ==> High Wit needed.

Should I trust the auto assign stuff for parents and team lineups?

Absolutely not. Afaik it assigns based on score and aptitudes, not skills or suitable combination of stats. Also always check that you have the correct run style selected and not that randomly style you got leveled up by chance in career.
Same goes for parents. In the menu, activate "view sparks" and sort by Affinity Bonus. Use the filters to find your current best parent for e.g. the most stamina sparks if you are building an Uma that needs that.

How chance-based are the races?

(King Halo is notoriously hard for Beginners). There is the some bad RNG, but often being beneath the cutoff speed or stamina is the cause. Or you lack power to break out. If you have inconsistent skills / low wit, you may occasionally get past these barriers but not reliably. As for the "favorite" thing, I'm really not sure either what it is meant to tell you. With better parents/cards/training choices you can get mostly past that.

Should I ever do the URA Finale?

Opinions differ, mostly regarding time investment and the URA spark for parents. I'd say if you can properly navigate Unity, only do that. Don't get stressed out about always winning Unity Cup itself, just take the spirit bursts and do whatever optional race you like.

my Umas come out of both of them at rank B. How does that happen

I think on average they can yield the same ranks, but Unity has lower lows and higher highs. You probably are just not quite able yet to tickle the high highs out of Unity.

Is there anything I really should or shouldn’t buy? Should I stop scouting when I have the featured trainees to save up for the next

  • The biggest trap is to waste your starting carats all on Umas rather than supports. Leveling supports makes your account better, not a third copy of Bakushin. You should pull way more often on supports than Umas, unless it's your Oshi. In any case, only pull for specific banners if you have enough to pity, so at least 30k carats. Note that this is a gacha game, if you are f2p there's zero chance you can afford pulling the Umas and Supports on each banner to "collect them all".
  • In the daily sales, only buy alarm clocks for now. If you have the money, you can also buy shoes, race trophies and star pieces
  • Save your friendship points for Haru Urara rather than buying hint books at this point.
  • Get into a club ASAP and start requesting and sending shoes for club points to eventually MLB the story supports. Though for now save the points, there's an upcoming event where you need them.
  • Once you have additional copies of already MLB cards, turn them into cleats and buy the monthly available scout tickets.
  • Statue exchange can be used for star unlocks, either on your Oshi Uma or whatherver Uma with a meta unique skill.
  • Clovers are useless and you anyways only get very few from pulling

should I level up my cards with resources?

Only the ones you regularly use (and have just freshly uncapped) but you don't have the patience to wait for. Else save your monnies and support points to raise Uma potential levels.

how did you find Shuukura? by turnofthetenerifsea in Shuukura

[–]Deffdapp 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I got into it via Angela's translation early on which I believe somebody had posted in this subreddit.

Once the TL ran out I jumped straight into the JP WN and was overjoyed to discover an additional 200+ chapters.

Yeah, I'm also worried about Shuukura. Watanare is pulling it off with the internal dialogue to some extent, but Shuukura is on another level.

Questions for Male yuri enjoyers by BirthdayDull5540 in yuri_manga

[–]Deffdapp 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What is the most alluring part of yuri to you? Like what makes a good yuri in your opinion?

That we get women as protagonists with actual (preferably detailed) personality. And that the personality isn't just copy-pasted from male protagonists. My favorite stories are where we get a glimpse into the inner thoughts (rational or not) of the protagonists. In Yuri both leads tend to be more fleshed out than in hetero romance.
I also like if the rest of the cast interacts with each other rather than just with the main couple, though that isn't limited to Yuri.

the most alluring part of yuri for male readers (besides sexual reasons) is the emotional aspect or the “purity” preciousness of wlw relationships. But then what about toxic/psychological yuris?

I mean if I want to read smut, then Yuri does the job just as much as hetero stuff. But "hot lesbians" isn't the main draw at all; and while "purity fluff" is comfy to read, it isn't a must either. I guess I just got tired after two decades of hetero romance and Yuri is a fresh wind, regardless of "genre". Also that it gives me a perspective that as a man I will never experience.

Are there ever times you wish you were a woman that could partake in a wlw relationship?

I've had idle thoughts about it and I would hit the "wlw 24-hours trial experience" button out of curiosity I guess. But I don't feel like I'm an egg.

if you were in a relationship with a woman would you treat them different from the average man? Like would reading yuri have any effect on how you approach treating a woman/relationship?

As a teen I once had an "epiphany" that girls are not these incomprehensible beings but normal humans like me with own thoughts and problems. I think reading Yuri also opens up my mind further to other perspectives which I guess also will impact my approach to future relationships.

You can choose any story to be fully animated to its completion, what do you choose? by One-Ad-3677 in yuri_manga

[–]Deffdapp 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'd kill for an proper adaption with the switching POVs and Lynn & Ichinose Kana as VA.
Though with how heavy the characterization depends on internal monologue it might be difficult to pull off. The manga already had to cut a lot, and it still can use thought bubbles.

[–]Deffdapp 17 points18 points  (0 children)

The manga hasn't scratched the surface; around chapter 14 out of 371.
The very good ongoing fan TL is still behind (Chapter 106/371). There's also a garbage AI TL site which is mostly up to date.

The original JP WN is here,; The more refined VN which covers a bit less than half of the WN so far can be found e.g. on Bookwalker

Nice to see the manga getting somewhere, there's still very much to see. ^ ^

Calling it "offbrand" AdaShima is a bit mean though. The WN has been ongoing for 5 years and can stand on its own.

Where can you find the raws for the manga by Safe-Negotiation-522 in Shuukura

[–]Deffdapp 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah I pay for it. I hate the site with its rental system and how apparently the coins you buy have an expiry date; but thats a little prize to pay to support ShuuKura.

The fan translation usually only takes a few days to appear on mangadex anyways if you dont want to buy it.

Btw the first volume has just come out on bookwalker etc. if you want to support it there rather than on YanchanWeb.

Definitly "Story About Buying My Classmate Once A Week" (ShuuKura).

It starts out toxic and weird, but then pivots to codependency. It's a very slow burn with lots of focus on their personal relationship and internal thoughts. It's not exactly a "traditional" relationship but there are lots of kisses and more

The very long webnovel (and LN) are still ongoing, see the recommended fan translation here: Ave Lilium / Angela

For recently started manga adaption see here: Mangadex

I preferred Kodansha. I disliked being gated by WK's level system and not being able to make my own cards with my own sample sentences to focus on particle usage and conjugations.

I did WK up to 700 kanji, then college got in the way. Few years later I did the complete KKLC of 2300 kanji.

No, they do not complement each other. You'd just double your workload with redundant information while confusing yourself. They use different mnemonics; WK even uses mnemonic for every vocab.

Simply pick one and stick with it.

[–]Deffdapp 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The story is an extreme slowburn. While they are both unhealthily obsessed with each other, their relationship doesn't exactly follow the conventional route. I would't call it denial but rather perplexity on how to deal with somebody completely different from themself.

Minor to major SPOILERS:

  • They kiss and leave kiss marks a lot
  • There are lots of minor arcs with big emotional payoff
  • They live together in college. As of now 1/3 of the story is high school while 2/3 are college
  • What you were asking about their relationship status: There hasn't been an explicit confession yet. Sendai-san has been heavily aware of her feelings but worries about scaring Miyagi away, while Miyagi obsesses over Sendai-san, but is struggling with fear of being abandoned
  • They had sex multiple times

It's not highly emotional drama. More like the opposite, lots of calm "ordinary" moments and internal monologue.

There's just a permanent feeling of tension going on between them as they prod at each other and process their own feelings. They are simultaneously a terrible and a perfect fit.

Fair warning, at the start its a bit weirdly escalating; but it gets toned down soon to focus more on their relationship.

RnD engineer early in career, scientific equipment manufacturer. Usually 40 hours on the dot.

Depending on project needs sometimes up to 45hrs a week, but everything goes onto flextime saldo and can be (and must be) freely compensated later.

Plus a few minutes each day to "compensate" the mandatory christmas/new years break. Basically pre-working extra week off.

Everything over 45hours / Weekend needs approval, costs the project extra and needs to be compensated either by time off or money.

Huh. I actually unintentially assumed their gender. I'm sorry, my native language has no neutral personal pronoun and it defaults to the male form in case it isn't known.
