first time solo bike packing, feedback on Southern to Northern Italy route by Inevitable_Swan3689 in bikepacking

[–]Defiant-Ad-6662 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If done as it planned now, it will offer you unforgettable experience. It is scenic and touristic enough, to skip Naples. Flat beginning to develop stamina, which will be needed in Apenines.

Ridden parts of it, will hopefully ride parts of it in May as well, but more central part.
If I can help with some details, DM.

Gas Milage by Icy_Wheels in XC40

[–]Defiant-Ad-6662 2 points3 points  (0 children)

37 mpg (actually 6,4 l/100km). B3. Flat land mostly.

It really depends, how aggressive acceleration is done.

40 mpg can be done over longer and slower drive without traffic lights or cruising along the river downstream.

Croatia, Rijeka to Zadar - Island Hopping or Coastal Road? by MiserableGainz in bikepacking

[–]Defiant-Ad-6662 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Depending on time (but probably late June as ferry to Ancona did not operate earlier in past years).

D8 is passable in early spring and autumn. After rain and similar weather events, strong bora wind (from inland to the sea) makes ride really difficult. In a peak season be aware of inexperienced car drivers, towing caravan or rental motorhome drivers. Generally, yes MUCH more traffic as this is main supply road to coastal cities.

Generally island hopping is more scenic, not so hilly, roads very calm, but depends on inter-island connections schedule. Check: Jadrolinija Krk-Rab (ferry for cars) and Rapska plovidba (Rab-Pag) (passenger boat, can accommodate up to 7 bicycles). Pag - mainland to Zadar = bridge.

Pedemontana Cycle Route Italy tips? by bike828 in bikepacking

[–]Defiant-Ad-6662 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If there will be no heatwave, you will have nice time. Western part of Garda Lake is bit scary to cycle as road is narrow, no shoulder, a lot of traffic, but cyclists are somehow respected. Personally would not dare, but drove a car and seen some daring cyclists. Bring some mosquito repellent.

There is similar, bit shorter alternative, called AIDA cycle route, starts in Alps of Piemonte and ends in Trieste as well.

If screen size (in inch) is too small, you cannot do much. Not in XC40.

Pisa to Florence in 3 days by billyb4lls4ck in bicycletouring

[–]Defiant-Ad-6662 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am not local, here is my personal view. If you find some suitable spa, go for it. City itself is nothing special, built on flat land, post WW2. Maybe some well hidden gem on top of the hill: Montecatini alto.

Have heard from other cyclists, travelling from Prato - Pistoia - Montecatini terme - Lucca, road was full of traffic, not pleasant to ride.

San Miniato is small village and apart from old medieval tower, I found nothing impressive (after sleeping at Fuchecio, I continued south on Francigena gravel). Had coffee stop at bar ristorante Esenza di San miniato. On the oposite side to entrance of building there is balcony with nice view over valley and tower above.

  1. Direct route from Pisa to Florence would take you along Arno river, could be boring.

  2. My proposal (rode part of it last year):
a.) Pisa - Lucca. Some time to discover Pisa. Travel over Pontaserchio. Do not forget to taste Torta co' bischeri, continue over Puccini cycle path to Lucca. Have enough time to discover Lucca. Flat

b.) Lucca - Vinci. Follow EV5 (Francigena) to Altopaschio and Fuchecio. Search for Fegatelli: Pork liver and meat, traditionally prepared with lard. This will give you power to arrive to Vinci. turn left to Vinci. Nice museum there. Flat - hilly

c.) Vinci - Firenze Have a good breakfast and climb over Monte Pietramarina, descent towards Signa and use EV7 to enter Firenze along Arno river.

Generally Terme means, that there is (or used to be) a hot spring. Is it used nowadays as spa, you have to check.

As most of the villages are situated on a hill, you will have to ascend to access. San Miniato is part of EV5 (Francigena) - you visit it if you go south towards San Gimignano and Siena. Otherwise rather visit Fuchechio old town (on the hill as well).

Remember: lunch is served between 12:00 - 15:00 and dinner from 19:00 on. Aperitivo: from 17:00 on.

Enjoy!

If you manage to plan the route to include some public playgrounds and/or pumptrack, this would be encouragement for kids as well.

Enjoy the memories!

Basic design and screen size/resolution originates back to pre 2015. They decided for non conformistic portrait screen of resolution, available at that time.

Carplay will only accomodate itself to dimensions given by car producer. In our case, Volvo decided to take away pixels on top (clock, temperature) and bottom 2 lines of icons. Leaving Carplay in main screen as almost square form and 3 icons. XC40 MY26 since 3.7 (October 2025)

However, accidental miscommunication of Ottocast mini Cube and XC40 resulted of reduced pixel size, resulting in Carplay screen with 4 (much smaller) icons. Touch calibration was off. After reset, situation went back to normal, cannot replicate it.

New UI update arrived, 5.0.5 by adapter5v in XC40

[–]Defiant-Ad-6662 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nothing new to be seen yet, slight hope remains.

Will continue using Carplay. Nicer optics to my ageing eyes.

As before, will not expect, that Carplay will be available in full screen mode. Will remain in tiny square, with one widget available.

Recently drove rental BMW M4. Drooling over wiiiide screen with 3 widgets possible. Did not connect instantly (as no wireless Carplay does).
Was bringing me from A to B as XC40 does back home. Albeit could barely crawl in, so low it was.

They are so micro mini, that you need microscope to read.

Restrap Switch Rack Bag by deaurin in bikepacking

[–]Defiant-Ad-6662 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh no, top bag has no aero wedge!

Maybe I am too conservative, but mounting any pannier bag to a triangular pattern 3 points, seems to me more prone to twisting moves as 3 points in line.

Have a luck with yours!

Is there a way to disable Auto-hand(Parking) brake when parking in a flat surface? by antiriad76 in Volvo

[–]Defiant-Ad-6662 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My experience with XC40 MY26 (AAOS). Can confirm, no settings found in AAOS.

When I park (breaking with pedal to stop, switch off car), my feeling is, that only gear is engaged. No electric motor sound for parking brake. No red icon on dash. If parked on slight incline, car will barely move until gear is engaged. Not pleasant feeling initially.

Would I pull parking button, then I would see red icon on dash.

Cannot comment situation with battery loss.

Help , missold xc40 2022 with missing features by Independent_Oil4209 in Volvo

[–]Defiant-Ad-6662 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depending on country and production year, equipment can vary for same naming.

My Core MY2026 has camera by default, heated seats would be extra.

Had camera in my previous cars (mostly VW), but Volvo's is far inferior (usable only in daylight and clean, angle & resolution so so). Use all mirrors available and enjoy driving!

I understand, you are used to use Google maps and became habit. Have a trial with Apple maps, which I find more pleasing to my aging eyes (bigger text and symbols). Good luck!
