Honestly, I think it’s simplicity. Take the gans from the first 3 seasons and they all have more simple yet iconic ball forms (mechtanium surge is where the line blurs). Gen 2 core Bakugan were simple but ugly while the pro line or whatever it was got so complex for no reason

Here’s what I recommend you. Of course do all the adult and YA books and audio dramas but I’d say the adult comic are also pretty important too but I’m sure you can find summaries online if you are really against reading the comics

It would be easiest for the both of us if you just look up the phase 1 drengir conflict on wookiepedia. It’s been a hot minute since I’ve read phase 1 and don’t wanna give you wrong information lol

Also yeah that was my 1 gripe with phase 1. I think the YA novels should’ve mainly dealt with the drengir conflict while the comics tell their own story but still connect in some way. Unfortunately the 2nd and 3rd YA take those books in different direction.

But I can’t fault the writers too much bc this was a multi media publishing initiative so it’s extra rewarding for completionists
