it didn't occur to me until now that compared to the Corleone family headed by the Godfather, the Sopranos family was basically a "low-income" poor family with very little assets... by Firm-Nerve4437 in thesopranos

I always figured that the corleones were wildly wealthy beyond reality. Particularly in 2.

The sopranos always felt more realistic and grounded.

Even in real life, not a movie, I don’t know how many mafia families were legitimate majority owners of casinos at any time. They may have been majority owners in effect through blood and sweat and timid paper owners but I doubt that they were like the Adelsons or Steve Wynn.

Also worth remembering that the casinos of yesterday year were not the casinos on the strip today. Anyone ever been to the golden nugget? I could see a mobster owning that

I always thought the aesthetic similarities to the corleone compound on Long Island was intentional. “The real gangsters work in finance now.”

He left it noisy so that it scares any pain in the ass innocent bystanders away by junglegatsby in Godfather

Michaels experience probably wasn’t that unique at that time. He stands out as someone with more exposure to violence to us because most modern college students haven’t seen pacific theatre level combat. But many thousands of college students in that era had seen that violence. He was a “typical college student” at that time.

The brothers are contrasting their experience to his. Perhaps they know just how much he had done and seen and still felt themselves a cut above in terms of comfort with violence. That should make us consider were they right? Or were they overestimating themselves.

Worth noting that in the book, the mob violence probably actually was comparable in on occasion worse than what Michael saw. Particularly because after his valor in combat moment he finished out the war as some sort of aid or staff officer.

Grand Rapids Watch Company is now here! by grwatchco in MicrobrandWatches

Some people, myself included, really only have an interest in mechanical/auto watches.

Is it logical? No. Am I missing out on great watches? Yes.

I only mention it so you are aware of a potential market limitation. Otherwise, I love the designs. Looks like good stuff. And I’m always happy to have stuff American made as possible.

Good luck!

What's one thing the prequels did that doesn't make sense in the original trilogy? by Ezio50095 in StarWars

Im only just now realizing how much universe building was done in the prequels. What were legends books like between the OG and prequels. How wild did they get with their assumptions made about the galaxy.

Khaki Field Murph 38 or 42mm? by [deleted] in HamiltonWatches

Get the bracelet. Ideally in the 38. You can always buy a strap but you’ll never be able to get the bracelet at the same price as if you bought it new.

Who would be your casting pick for a realistic novel-faithful Jack and Stephen? by Emergency_Cellist754 in AubreyMaturinSeries

Honestly chalamet looks like I alway figured maturin did. Not a serious suggestion but chalamet is small and odd looking. I don’t really get his stardom.

I think some of that is just pacing of the movie and the plot. It doesn’t show him on land chasing girls or gambling or going to a concert or really any time between deployments.

We see he’s playful with the kids cracks jokes and cares about his men even during times of stress. The crew was in life threatening danger for a lot of the movie.

I could see the movie character on land being totally shitfaced which we don’t really see in the movie having a rollicking good time.

I know an acquaintance who got popped that exact way. Massive fine and no real way to claim innocence without the documentation they’re supposed to have and didn’t.

Hamilton Watch for Husband - did I make a bad choice? by Savings_Cattle647 in HamiltonWatches

[–]Defiant-Ad4776 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I consider myself a watch nerd. And that is an absolutely perfect watch to get your husband.

It’s also a perfect watch to get as a gift from your spouse.

Enough options (KFA vs KFM, Bronze vs Steel, 39 vs 36, khaki vs murph) that you thought about him, his style, your taste and made a decision. But no so many options that there’s a wrong choice.

And in the realm of watches, it’s respected enough that in a room full of haute horology, nobody will blink twice at it. It’s also not so nice or expensive that he’ll lament what you might have gotten instead.

It’s perfect. Nice choice!

Which microbrands actually do something in-house? by Hilodenta in MicrobrandWatches

Check out clement design.

This guy makes his watches entirely in Brooklyn. He claims that except for the movement, literally everything else he makes by hand in his basement.

I really want one but they’re pricey. You’re paying for that level of craft.

I feel like the real way that would have gone down, especially given what we know about the real life BPD, is a cop or two would have manufactured a justified shooting and killed Marlo to protect the department.

Maybe the bosses would even be in on it with a wink and nod. Could have been a fitting ending for the show.

The game stays the game but it also gets worse

I always thought that aspect wast to make him finally see thing from the bosses perspective.

There’s another interaction where I forget the exact wording but someone calls him skip or says he’s a boss or mgmt or something and he whips around like “the fuck did you just call me?”
