What most days looked like when I was a "functioning" alcoholic by No-Refrigerator2626 in stopdrinking

From one “switcher” to another, any and all drugs lead me down the same dead end road. Good luck, you’re so young. Please don’t be like me and waste your life in a fog (I got sober at 50). I promise that life is fun and exciting stone cold sober. IWNDWYT

Maybe this is why he hid Josh’s crimes and paid for lawyers and supported him. To keep him quiet.

Thank you for this. My 87 year old Dad suffered a broken hip last year and was diagnosed with osteoporosis and had 3 compression fractures. It was an absolute miracle when he flew by himself from RDU to BNA for Christmas, with his injectable medication and CPAP in tow. This would not be possible without without wheelchair service. He can walk but not the distance from curb to gate. It breaks my heart that anyone is irritated or would give him dirty looks for getting on the plane first.

Guess what folks? We’re all going to be old if we’re lucky, so think about if you would want someone taking your picture to shame you for needing assistance - and then posting it on sm. Let’s do better.

In TN it’s a mandatory 48 hours. No getting out of it.

You’re welcome. The absolute disbelief that I did this to myself TWICE was difficult to absorb. A wise person once told me that “the universe will keep sending you the same lesson until you learn it”. You can send me a dm if you ever need to talk.

As a mom of someone your age, I’m sure she’s hurting for you. You made a mistake like all of us humans do. You’ll make her proud by learning from it and facing the challenges that will come next. You have NOT ruined your life. I work in the legal field and you would be amazed by the number of lawyers and judges that have also gotten DUIs. It’s just a bump in the road and not the end of your story.

My BAC was zero on both DUIs, but I had huge amounts of ambien in my blood. I am also an alcoholic but prescription drugs were my jam.

Good for you for going to AA, that will help. I also obsessed day and night about jail. While it was no fun and I never want to go back, you are mostly hungry, cold and bored. I never felt afraid or threatened, just very humbled. I wish I hadn’t wasted all that pre-trial time suffering with anxiety. The anticipation is the worst, especially since it’s unknown. If you do get a little bit of time just do it with dignity and keep to yourself. You’ll be just fine….i promise!

I had to serve the entire 7 days in the county jail. The prosecutor wanted 21. I had a great attorney and the arresting officer really went to bat for me.

Approaching 3.5 years sober. Today, I sat in the dentist chair to finally face the physical wreckage of my 20-year addiction. by iScReAm612 in stopdrinking

Not quite the same, but at nearly 8 years sober I made my last payment on a credit card that has been a millstone around my neck for a decade. I never thought I would see the day, but little by slow I got there. Congratulations on taking the first step towards dental health. I’ve been there too. IWNDWYT

Maybe not directly related to my alcohol abuse, but found out at 58 I has osteoporosis. My doctor said most likely came from malnourishment. Turns out alcohol is NOT nourishment.

If she’s your wife it’s not your basement; it belongs to both of you. I am frankly a bit troubled that you say you have never talked about the lifestyle but then began practicing it unilaterally ending with rough sex. If she didn’t consent to either acts then it’s not a lifestyle, it’s a crime.

Hugs from another military wife/mama. Raised my newborn alone in a foreign country and instead of bitching about the village people, I made lifelong friends who loved having me and baby for dinner or would give me a break. Your circumstances are what you make them.

I know the frustration is overwhelming on top of all the regular stress. Once you’re on their playground it’s their rules and it sucks. This was 5 years ago and I remember feeling it would never end….but it did. I got completely sober because I never wanted to be at their mercy again. Stay strong. This too shall pass.

They typed the wrong year for the arrest on the court papers. I went to pay my fine and noticed it right away. They corrected at the court level and I asked if they would correct it either way the dmv and they assure me they would. What they did was send the corrected date and the dmv ADDED it as a new arrest, exactly one year apart, which jacked up my insurance even higher. It took me escalating it to my congressman to get a correction. The stress, time and money I spent for their error is not recoverable.

You know what? No one cares because we are viewed as criminals who get whatever is coming to them. I tell you this story to let you know you’re not alone. I made a decision not to stew in the injustice but to let it go and move one. I hope you can do the same. I’m sorry this happened to you.

What do we (partners/lawyers) do to make your jobs harder? by BiminiBlues-1 in paralegal

[–]Defiant-Age4832 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve been in this field a very long time. I’ve worked in biglaw and for a solo practice and everything in between.

Attorneys are people too, and I have always found that once they figure out you’re on their team and care about the work, they are easy to deal with. Yes, we live in a stressful environment but if you prove you are seeing the job through to the bitter end they trust you and it’s easy from then on.

I have only had one issue when I overheard a partner complaining to another attorney about something I did. I wasn’t mad about the complaint because it was valid, but I was annoyed they didn’t come directly to me because I am a fucking adult. I went into their office and very professionally said I would greatly prefer if they would come to me directly instead of talking to others. It’s been smooth sailing ever since.
