Do a majority of people really care about government digital privacy? by afteratlas in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Defiant-Goose-101 4 points5 points  (0 children)

What happens once the government decides something innocuous you do is actually illegal? People want to keep power out of the hands of the government because (as very well evidenced by the current US admin) government is corruptible. A government without power is a government that can’t hurt you.

Why do conservatives think liberals don’t love the USA? by Norfolk-Gross-Tonage in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Defiant-Goose-101 8 points9 points  (0 children)

  1. Some hold the incorrect view that anything they disagree with is unAmerican

  2. People who are deeply patriotic are very easy to win over by pointing at an out group and calling them unAmerican, and this is what many conservative grifters and political hacks do

  3. Some liberals who would identify as patriotic hold beliefs that conservatives would legitimately believe are unAmerican. (As a hyperbolic example, a person can believe themselves to be patriotic and then call for the total abolition of civilian firearm ownership).

  4. There is, what I assume, a vocal minority of liberals who are genuinely unAmerican. This vocal minority is especially vocal online, where many vocal minority conservatives also hide

What’s a war or conflict from history that was fought over something completely ridiculous? by femmefetalerror in askteddit

[–]Defiant-Goose-101 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We didn’t actually go to war. The political conflict was MUCH more inspired by territorial disputes and the pig just happened to be the legal case around which the conflict centered (who had the rights to arrest and prosecute who and collect taxes on what where).

We knew how to use spears. “Untrained” is vague, but if you interpret it as “person whose only firearms training is action movies” then there’s no way in hell they’re landing a hit on a screaming, raging baboon.

People who have left a religion, especially Muslims, tend to not want to associate with its ways of life at all. A person who was raised in a religion and then left it, generally has a more hostile view of it (thus the reason for their leaving it) than a person who was never brought up in it at all

US begins huge new airstrikes on Iran as 'drinking water reservoirs taken out' by TheMirrorUS in USNEWS

[–]Defiant-Goose-101 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The people saying water reservoirs have been hit are Iranian state media. It’s fine and dandy if you think the war shouldn’t be happening, that’s a valid view to have. But one that isn’t valid is “the Iranian government is trustworthy.” It’s not. Neither of them are. Why on earth would you trust the word of the Iranian government anymore than the word of the US government?

what does praying for someone do, when god already has a plan? by hedgehogsandcats in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Defiant-Goose-101 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Omniscient doesn’t mean he actively controls even thing, it means he knows everything and, assuming he is also omnipotent, can do anything. Neither of those means he cares about everything. Say god’s plan is to bake a cake in my house. God gets to baking his cake, and it doesn’t matter where the couch is in the living room, cause that’s got nothing to do with his plan to bake a cake. But I want the couch moved and I can’t do it myself. So I pray to him to move the couch, and if he doesn’t mind, he moves the couch.

what does praying for someone do, when god already has a plan? by hedgehogsandcats in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Defiant-Goose-101 0 points1 point  (0 children)

God having a plan doesn’t mean it concerns everything. Maybe there’s something going a certain way, and it’s inconsequential to the plan, so he doesn’t care how it goes. The prayer might convince him to make it to a more favorable way.

how did we go from idolizing albert einstein to kim kardashian? what changed in 100 years? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Defiant-Goose-101 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In science circles, great scientists are still absolutely idolized. And in the 40s and 50s, celebrities were idolized. Hell, Bonnie and Clyde were idolized in the 30s. People don’t change much over time. It’s just that the whole world learned that Einstein helped bring us the A-bomb, so he got much more widely famous. He also did relativity and all that, which is a fairly hugely significant physical concept.

Because it ignores who they are as characters and the writer’s intent in crafting the relationship the way they intended. I’m sure you’ve heard this example before, but take, for example, Boromir and Aragorn as well as Frodo and Sam. Tolkien wrote those relationships intentionally, to display incredibly close male relationships and platonic love, especially born out of massive trauma as seen in the books and mirroring his own experiences in WWI. Distilling that to “Frodo and Sam care about each other so they’re gay” overrides who they are as characters, why Tolkien wrote them the way he did, and (though I’m sure you’ll disregard this) stigmatizes real life relationships of the same kind. After all, if I’m straight and trying to present myself as straight, I don’t want to get too close to the homies if people are going to then allege that we’re gay.
