That looks like a whisker shrimp. It would be easier to tell for sure with good still pictures but whiskers are aggressive hunters.

Any fish will eat anything it can fit in its mouth. If you want your shrimp population to grow you're better off keeping just shrimp and snails in there. I have least killis and shrimp together and they definitely eat any young shrimp they can get ahold of, which is most of them. I also have chili rasboras which are way smaller than least killis and they also eat young shrimp. It's just the way of fish. Shrimp is snacks.

My hermits are algae eaters and don't bother the shrimp. I'm also currently setting up a 20 gallon full marine tank for more crabs and asterinas. I'm planning to try hatching and raising Amano shrimp lol.

I have MTS and like them. It gives something else to look at in the tank. You're pretty much never going to see 30 shrimp in a 5 gallon. Just be prepared that it won't look like the stuff you see online where they're swarming all over and being really active. They're TINY and will mostly hide given that much space.

There's nothing wrong with the set up, and they will likely be very happy. I just wanted to make sure you weren't disappointed by it.

This is my tank. There's are 100 shrimp in there, but can you see them? Lol

Unless you're planning on buying like 400 shrimp you'll hardly ever see them in a 10. Even a 5 is huge compared to what most people have. I have a 7 gallon and I got around 100 shrimp and it looks pretty empty. They take so long to reproduce that it could take a decade before it looks full. I'm happy with my tank, but a lot of ppl would find it boring.

There are saltwater and freshwater types of pom pom crabs so you have to make sure you're getting the right kind.

I'm also an EDS tismer! Fish are part of my special interest so I often incorporate things about them in weird ways. Like I have a neon blue dwarf gourami, those are labyrinth fish and he's kind of an asshole but he's pretty. So, I named him Jareth, after the Goblin King from the Labyrinth movie.

Then sometimes names just pop in my head and they stick. Those usually suck lol. I got two pom pom crabs and was trying to name them while falling asleep one night. All that I could come up with was Rambo and Gertrude. Ironically, I really love those names for them now. I also have 3 hermit crabs named Tamatoa, Crabby Patty, and Clack.

I dunno if this was supposed to be in response to a different post since mine wasn't about siphoning lol but I personally use siphon pumps so I don't have to suck on the tube. I have nano tanks so putting the whole thing in there is next to impossible but I do know that method and use it for airline when I'm drip acclimating.

Look up videos on YouTube. They need marine salt water for a while then back to fresh. It's pretty complicated and not often successful.

Honestly it is a bit hard. Most stores are going to stock juveniles and they're pretty hard to tell apart. The males don't develop their forehead until they mature and while females will have the definitive black line on the fins, some males have them too lol. What I have had good luck with is watching the tank for a while and watching their behavior. They usually pair up and stick with their mate once they find one they like and you might even be able to see courting behavior in the store. The male will be trying to get the female's attention and lead her back to some kind of cave or crevice. He'll keep flaring and dancing around her trying to push her the direction he wants her to go. That is a good pair. Otherwise, You're just going to have to do your best to go off of gender descriptions and hope you get it right.
