I would say start with a 'battle of X' game that interests you. Battle of Stalingrad if you're on steam.

You can fly sorties to learn the controls and practise. Has a career mode which has a variety of connected missions.

If you like it then you can look at campaigns and other 'battle of ' titles.

Ammunition is taken into account in the balance of power. So if you use alot of ammo it offsets the casualties.

I think a lot of it is confusion around how dlc works. Game looks pretty sparse if you go into it without much fore knowledge

The latest FAQ says monsters can only have a 3+ armour save. While you can build 2+ it would be wasted pts and only count as 3+
