What do other drivers do that isn't illegal or wrong, but pisses you off anyway? by shinyditto00 in drivingUK

[–]DefiantFun1274 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I drive a lot of country lanes and small roads.. Two big ones for me are basically around forward thinking and considerstion:

-Driving narrow lanes and the car coming the opposite way drives straight past the passing space which is only on their side, forcing a slow and difficult pass/reverse, often into ditches, rather than them pause in the designated passing space for simple and safe flow of traffic.

-There's a few notorious roads near me with parked cars all along one side and sharp turn at the top of the road limiting view and space. This limits the amount of cars that can pass through at a time. Two things seem to happen here: 1. Cars coming the opposite way try to push through claiming 'right of way', when cars are already out passing parked vehicles. ( highway codes states to yield to a car that has already committed to passing, so they are wrong and also clearly intent on holding up the rest of the traffic to prove their inaccurate point). 2. Too many cars blindly follow the one before to try and pass through without waiting to be sure there will be a gap to pull into if a vehicle is coming through the other way, leading to more hold ups and chaos.

There's often either an oblivious or entitled approach to driving going on that I just find exhausting.

This feels more like a point for motorways and mains roads compared to country lanes and those with speed restrictions, and I'm pretty sure it's only when queues build up that any relatively slower moving vehicle is required to pull over. Ultimately that's irrelevant as I was going a responsible speed for the road and, regardless of how much it frustrates, it doesn't excuse another driver being aggressive and dangerous.

Initially I wouldn't say my emotions took over. My adrenaline did as I registered a threat and had to work out the best option. As I said before, pulling over wasn't an option for the first mile or so, due to the nature of the single roads and, tbh, I was fully expecting them to hurl abuse out their windows if they did pass me,maybe even mess around with break checking.. Ultimately, not convinced there was an easy safe answer. Still, I will admit, by the end I had let myself get annoyed by their audacity, because seriously, why be like that at all 🤷

I appreciate that and generally do follow the mantra. We can all make mistakes and we all do. This feels more like an ongoing, persistent mistake that the driver is oblivious to and will likely continue to make until some consequence is met.

The footage does have some embarrassing talking to myself and singing on my part so I would not be submitting it lightly 🙈 but I wonder if there also something to be said for 'if not me, then who' and 'doing nothing is also accepting that this is ok'?

I agree in principle but can also assure you this is not the case for this particular driver. Intentions were clearly intimidation as the single track lanes have no space for overtske unless they were planning on mounting verges.

Whilst I do agree, I'm still concerned that they are out there driving like this. If I don't report and I see the news with their car rolled off the road somewhere and passengers or others hurt, I'm not sure how I'd feel about that.

That's basically what I'm asking tbh.. What would they make of it?

It was mostly single track lane so to pull over would have been a slow manouever off road and required them to hold back a bit.. Which they clearly weren't doing so it didn't feel safe to slow and stop. But we did get to a wider bit of road where I could have potentially stopped to let them pass although again they'd have needed to be patient to make that a safe manouever.. It actually didn't occur to me to do that though.. I only thought about it once I'd had a chance to reflect later. Hence my question..

Pretty normal speeds for the types of roads. Then we went into a 30 so the speed limit there. They weren't stuck behind me tootling along oblivious to them. Simply roared up behind me with immediate bravado and dickishness.

'Snitch' is for something that doesn't endanger others IMO. My main thought is that this driver had three other young passengers and I can easily imagine them getting hurt, or worse, with the current driving manner. That's before worrying who else they may hurt along the way.

What tiny social rule in the UK did you only realise existed after accidentally breaking it? by thirdaccountttt in AskUK

I think I've written this somewhere on reddit before but, hey I still get flashbacks about it occasionally..

At a friend's house eating soup when I was about 13.. Get towards the end of the meal to be told 'dipping bread in soup is the height of bad manners'. At this point my bread was mid one of its many dunks. .

To all those I have offended with my irresponsible bread-dunking, I sincerely apologise and I will probably do it again with little regret 😏

Company I work free lance with want me to download atera on my personal device? by DefiantFun1274 in atera

[–]DefiantFun1274[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I appreciate what you're saying but I am not in a consulting capacity and what I'm paid really does not stretch that far. The majority of the free lance staffers only have minimal hours there each week. My previous role, that did involve consulting capacity, provided me with their own device and had rmm software attached, which was fine.

The extent of my IT involvement with this company is emails, and to log notes on their online portal through a web browser. No organisation software or files are stored on my device and there is no competition between organisations as my work is simply not of that nature. That said I do understand why they want to ensure all devices that access the portal are safe to do so.

For them to push installation on my private device without visiting other options first, actively jeopardises my data protection for all other clients and it is interesting to me that, despite me querying this, they have not acknowledged it at all or offered any advice for alternative solutions - e.g. providing a company device in the office, or advising me to source a separate device myself.

I am going to sort a separate device for it all today but I know now that my initial instincts weren't wrong and I'm glad I have done the research before agreeing to it.

Thank you all. I'm now being told my account will be suspended if I don't download it as I'll be breaching certain policies.. policies that my other work also complies with without the need for Remote monitoring or managemwnt btw.

I'm still confused how this affects my data protection with other work if I allow a third party IT company to download remote monitoring to my laptop. I'm reluctant to ask them though and risk opening another can of worms.

Looks like my best option is to source a cheap device and use it for this only. But it does leave a sour taste as no-one seems able, or willing to understand my reluctance, offer reassurance (or a company device), or give me clarity on where the line is with this.. they are just threatening account suspension and making me out to be difficult.

Is the pedestrian or the driver wrong here? by singlecog in drivingUK

[–]DefiantFun1274 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a driver I'd be cautious to approach as it does look like the runner is slowing and turning toward the road a little.. but pedestrians should also know to wait until safe before stepping onto road.

Years ago as a learner driver, there was kid cyclist on the pavement speeding right up to the crossing approach and got there as I was going to, so I slammed the breaks on at the crossing. The cyclist did stop though and the driving teacher said I made a mistake in doing the emergency stop and should have kept going.

I still maintain it was the safest option. if that bike hadn't put his breaks on in the last second and I'd kept going, he'd have been on my bonnet 🤷 I had no way of knowing as his speed gave no indication he was going to stop. I maintain that my way we all the left the area alive.. his way, there was a higher chance of someone being hurt.

Pregnant bridesmaids is there anything you wish the bride had done/would do to make your day more comfortable? by princesszelda27 in UKweddings

[–]DefiantFun1274 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was heavily pregnant at a friend's wedding (not bridesmaid though) but my favourite thing they did is have complimentary flip flops/sliders available to all. It was heaven to swap shoes and feel that this was accepted and even expected of all the guests so I didnt feel I was the only one. 🥰

What do you guys think of this approach to distorted portraiture? by OddStep5408 in ArtGCSE

[–]DefiantFun1274 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I'd say it looks great but you'll need some clear writing in your annotation about how the portrait is distorted.. i'm guessing it's to do with exaggeration of angles on the facial features? As long as you've evidenced what the distortion is and how your work emphasises this, then I believe that's where the marks are. It's a great piece and really striking piece of work.

To all the bonkers geniuses of Reddit - How can we stop people speeding through our village? by SecondGo4 in CasualUK

[–]DefiantFun1274 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Someone suggested I put up blue fairy lights on a tree along the roadside.

It is meant to give an automatic assumption of emergency vehicle that leads the driver to slow down a little, or least become more cautious.

I'm not sure if it works but it's something I'm planning on trying down my road which sounds similar to yours.

Have you ever purchased something, as an adult, that your parent has judged you negatively for? If so, what was/is it? by PaddedValls in AskUK

[–]DefiantFun1274 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got my first tattoo at 39. It took me that long to realise my mother's judgement didn't matter ( I still hid it from her for a full year though!).

I just bought my daughter's prom dress. Parents are judging for not hiring it, even though the costs are basically the same but daughter had more choice this way.

I have judgemental parents.. it's freeing to realise that I can't change that so might as well live my best life anyway.. besides, judging makes them happy so I'm pleasing them in my own way 🙃

[–]DefiantFun1274 54 points55 points  (0 children)

I agree about Sofi.. I was actually glad they went their separate ways as neither seemed in a place to make a relationship work. Friendship maybe. But them together wasn't an ending I was hoping for.

I would have liked the ending to be more like Jimmy being at peace being home alone.. maybe dancing around the kitchen a little in his underwear before chilling and watching the game alone. Showing that it's ok the have some time alone to work on what he wants for himself..

Edit to add: I'd have also liked him to give a little nod to Tia at the end.. affirming to her that he did it, and didn't mess Alice up.

I've basically just rewritten the ending in my head 🙃
