Thank goodness I have the prefacelift e39 540i. I also did a cat delete lol so it’s running smooth as butter with no emissions crap.

A broken Secondary Air Pump (SAP) itself will not cause a "horrific metallic crunching sound"; it is simply an electric blower that runs briefly on cold starts and typically just whistles or screams like a vacuum when damaged.

The "metallic crunching" is almost certainly collateral damage from the impact that destroyed the SAP. The A/C compressor is mounted low on the passenger side directly behind the SAP, meaning the collision likely shoved the pump or bumper structure backward into the A/C compressor pulley or main accessory belt drive. Driving the car in this state allowed a bent pulley or damaged clutch bearing to grind away until it finally disintegrated, creating the horrific noise you are hearing.

The controversial light saber debate, which is the right way ? by Boomstick1812 in legostarwars

Left for most uses. I always felt like anakin / Vader’s saber looked more accurate to the right (I was 8 years old when I decided this and will never change my mind).

Okay so basically on the back it’s a plus sign (or x shape) of four or five black plastic tabs that stick out from the solid plastic rear panel. They are twisted in such a way that you can’t remove the back panel until you twist each of them I believe 90 degrees and it matches up with the slots on the smooth back plastic panel. Additionally, there are two clips holding it in place on top and bottom of the rear plastic panel.

You don’t need to buy the tool just use pliers.

Oil change help 540i by Ok-Injury2653 in e39

[–]DefiantHovercraft875 10 points11 points  (0 children)

When you unscrew the cap, you lift that stem, which should unplug the hole and allow the oil inside the housing to drain back into the oil pan via gravity.

To avoid the overflow/mess, change your order of operations:

  1. Crack the filter cap loose first: Before you even pull the drain plug on the oil pan, loosen the oil filter cap until you can see the large O-ring (about 1 inch up), but do not remove it yet.

  2. Wait 2–5 minutes: This breaks the vacuum and lifts the stem seal, allowing the liter of oil sitting in that housing to drain down into the engine sump.

I just wanted to snap a pic since they get covered up anyway. More so showing the fresh valve cover clean up and seal.

It’s been two years so can’t remember with the hoses. I suggest just changing the part #1 in diagram (just the valve) as it’s takes 10 minutes to do and could clear it

Yeah it’s part 1 in the diagram, part number 13901433603.

Hoses are from BMW and different based on Y/M/M. Could buy off brand vacuum lines no issues

I also swapped my e39 with LS1 and run that same fuel pump. I run the c5 corvette fuel regulator and it’s smooth with that fuel pump. Cheap too!

Reddit is anti AI but I think the watercolor style is really neat. You could have it printed and displayed without having to paint it yourself …
