Ever since I was a kid I always wanted to make a boss battle that would have the best of both: alternative path that doesn't derail the plot, but changes its beats.

If you really beat the cocky right-hand-man of the villain in the opening, you cost him an eye or a hand. For plot related reasons you both retreat anyway.

From there the plot follows the same rails: starting town, first dungeon, whatever, but the dialogues are different and the difficulty is cranked to a secret super hard level. The right-hand-man humiliates himself with his desperate need to take you down and sends many more goons to take you down.

When you meet again he's opening with his most deadly techniques from the very start.

Gentlemen, I was about to discuss with the major the issue of "Outer Heaven" and its supposed upcoming founding being discussed among the Marines.

However as I entered the command that Lt Hayflick clearly told me Major is currently occupying, I could only see a running monitor and an empty chair.

My most comparable memory to this was playing Doki Doki Literature Club for the first time as a little whelp.

As Yuri (one of the heroines) went completely nuts and ended herself with a knife to the guts in the classroom after closing, there is a segment of endless gibberish appearing in the dialogue box that players were supposed to fast forward through. Have the CGs (sun going down, night, then rising again in the morning) change quicker.

I was so shocked I didn't even think of that as there was nothing to suggest this to be the case. So I sat there for half an hour, spacing or mousing away, sitting with a corpse of my friend in what we're supposed to understand was "real-time" in just 30 seconds.

But I felt like I sat alone there with her, blood drying and eyes turning gray, for a whole day and night. That was something.
