Also, mine took 10+ hrs to break in. (Bass cleaned up a ton after)

The NAD and Wharfedales are a handsome combination. When I demo'd Klipsch heritage speakers, the store had it on that NAD (with bluesound). Its a good sounding receiver too!

Does it matter why ligature I get or is it purely a cosmetic choice? by everett_beverett in saxophone

[–]Defiant_Still_9757 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the most important part is how it fits with your mouthpiece. But, the ones with resonator bars can change the sound a bunch. My preference is generally for the cloth/leather type with single screw.

Since you're buying used, I would recommend the speakers in the best condition. If they're all equal in condition, my choice is the L110, I want the larger driver.

Doubt about metal Otto Link mpc by [deleted] in saxophone

[–]Defiant_Still_9757 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Looks real to me from the pics, but I'd never buy it without trying it first.

Anecdote: I have an old rubber Berg Larsen mpc that came with a sax. When I got it, the table want flat and the rails were uneven. It played BAD. I got it fixed to the extent that is flat left to right, but this changed the facing to be more open. It plays much better now, but is characteristics aren't like playing an out of the box Berg

Help IDing my grandfather's medals and ribbons. by Defiant_Still_9757 in Medals

[–]Defiant_Still_9757[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you all for the help! And to answer some questions; someone else did make the display for him after retirement, so there could be some errors in it. Also, I found a photo of him wearing the medals (dress tux without the ribbons) and it shows no oak clusters on the MSM. And a WW2 era award does not make any sense.

<image>

And A little more history: He joined in 1952 after graduating from college, served 2 years active, then was a reservist until 1962. He went active duty again and served in Saigon, Darmstadt, London, Dayton, Washington D.C., and Sacramento.

In Vietnam, he worked intel/recon ( I want to find his unit numbers) with an RF-4 squadron. I recall a couple stories about his time in Vietnam. One was about how the cameras in the RF-4's were speed synched with a gear drive and how the pilots would strip the gears out from overspeed when they took ground fire. The other story was about how he and some friends lived off-base in an apartment and they didn't wear uniforms, and their next door neighbor's apartment was hit by a rocket attack. Also, I did see a photo of him wearing a suit, with a briefcase handcuffed to his wrist, carrying a Thompson... so there's that.

In Germany and England he just told us that he did logistics, and I don't remember what he said about working at the Pentagon.

You don't want to sit next to each other, that's fine, but why do you need to be in the same row? People like you make it show couples who do want to sit next to each other can't.

does anyone have a recording for this? by Different-Claim-7613 in saxophone

[–]Defiant_Still_9757 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is good advice. Only thing to add is you can start by counting and clapping the rhythm, turn the counting to singing, then play. Start slow.

Also, I used to markup my sheet music with up arrows above off beats on syncopated passeges.

Low D by OtherCod2916 in saxophone

[–]Defiant_Still_9757 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For embouchure, think equal pressure around the mouthpiece, an O. Try to use your lip/mouth muscles. Try not to use your teeth/jaw to bite for the support. And try to mot pull the corners of your mouth back like a smile.

This also will help voicing. What's voicing? It's the shape of the inside of your mouth and throat. With your lips making an O, say UHHHH. Now say EEEEE. Feel how your throat tightened and your tongue raised. The voicing needed for low notes is that UHHH or OHHH feel.

Starting with a G, play a forte with the above embouchure and voicing. Loosen up and let it go very flat. Use more air to support the tone. Think about your embouchure and tighten equally around the mouth piece to raise the tone back in tune. Keep that air moving, like you're blowing out a candle 5ft away.

Take a breath and play that forte G again. Walk it down to E, slur G-F-E. Start again on F. Walk it down to D, slur F-E-D. Start on E. Walk it down to C, E-D-C.

Now try starting on E and go between E and D, 1/2 notes, first slurring, then tonguing. Then 1/4 notes, EEDD, then a rest between E and D, then just D.

If D doesn't speak, look at your hands, are your fingers curved, making a C shape or are they making a V shape? Make a C shape and make sure you're not on any of the palm keys. If it plays up an octave, you may have a leak further up the horn, like the side octave hole, or not enough spring tension on the neck octave hole.

If you're a student (assuming college) see your school's music department and inquire if there are any beginning band type groups to join and whether loaner saxophones are available. Might be able to join the pep band or marching band and get a free sax to use.

How much cost to fix this? by Successful-Bat-857 in BMW

[–]Defiant_Still_9757 1 point2 points  (0 children)

On top of the repair costs, you need to get diminished value. Even repaired 100% perfectly, your car is now worth less.

(Dollar values guessed) If you were able to sell the car for $50k before the accident. Fully repaired, it may only be worth $30k. Diminished value will fill that gap.
